Morrowind – based on Kazakh Orda (Kazakhstan)???

Hey people. I’m sorry for my English im not a native English speaker!
The things I want to point out in this thread are the myth that the game Morrowind released by Bethesda in 2002 was based on the history of the Kazakh nation.
The similarities in the game and lore and the real history of the Kazakh are so much that I remember being shocked while first time playing Morrowind.

Without further due let me begin!

First the main story of the Morrowind revolves around the Dunmer race and their Prophecy about coming of the Nerevar who would unify all the Dunmer and drive the Imperial out of the Morrowind.

1)Lest start from the race itself the Dunmer were once the Chimer (Changed Folk, or Changed Ones), who were a people of the Altmeri who had abandoned the ways, customs and laws of the Summerset Isles, and embarked on a great exodus to Morrowind. They followed the Veloth, who spoke to them on behalf of Boethiah, the Daedric Prince of Plots.

1)The Kazakh people were once a part of the larger Turkic Empire consistent of the other nomad nations. Lead by two warlord Janibek and Kerey Kazakh people abandoned their former rulers, traveled and set up in the modern days Kazakhstan.

2) The Dunmer race were more similar to Almers in the past. But because of their betrayal of the Nerevar Azura cursed them and changed their appearance to the dark skinned red eyed elves.

2) The Kazakhs were once white skinned and blue eyed nomads mostly like nowadays russians. There was a prophecy told by the elders, saying that because of their sins and polytheism, the God would punish Kazakh people with a black army of His slaves. Which happed during the Mongol Invasion. That changed the Kazakh appearance forever. Thought similar to Kazakh – Tatarian tribe (nowadays Tatars) still saved their appearance by joining the Mongols.

3) The Dunmers have a customs of honoring their dead relatives and ancestor worshipping. And asking them for help when needed. They are also a Daedra worshippers.

3) That is also so true for the Kazakhs, having the what they called – Aruach. Aruach is a spirit of the dead relatives who if asked can help you in the worldly affairs. And having a Spirit Gods. Like Tengri – is a main God and the God of skies. Umai – the Mother and the Godest of Earth etc. With the Arabs came a new religion – Islam. But Kazakh never forgotten their former deities. That is why Kazakhs being scold by the Arabs even now who though ancestral worshipping as a violation of the Islam Religion.

4) The Great Houses of Morrowind – in the game there are only 3 houses though there are more in the lore. House Hlaalu – traders and politicians. House Telvanni – mages. House Redoran – warriors.

4) You will be laughing but there are 3 Great Houses ruling in the Kazakhstan. Thought there are more but they doesn’t have the political and financial influence. They are not called Houses but – Jyz. Which is basically the same. So there are 3 Jyzes – Uly Jyz –Politicians and traders. Orta Jyz – mostly farmers, and involved in agriculture. Kishi Jyz – were known to be the warriors. I was born to the Uly Jyz for example

5) Lest speak about each house and their similarity starting from the Great House Hlaalu.
You all know about this House, they were the first to pledge allegiance to the Empire, they are mostly traders and politicians.

5) Uly Jyz is the house of rulers. Most Khans if not all of the Kazakh Khanate were from this Jyz. They were also a good traders being in the middle of the “great silk road” (Trade route between the China and Europe). During the Russian Empire invasion they were the first once to pledge the allegiance and saved their influence. Even nowadays the highest political places are occupied by members of this Jyz. And the President is also from the Uly Jyz.

6) House Telvanni – mages.

6) Well there are no mages in the real world  but we have the Orta Jyz.

7) House Redoran – warriors. They were the once who fought the Empire. They despise the Empire and are ready to drove them back from the Morrowind.

7) Kishi Jyz – are the once that fought with the Russians the most, and were the last House to pledge the allegiance. Were nearly extinct. Despises the Russians even now. And have driven out Russians from the Jyz lands after Kazakhstan gained independence.

8) By the time we start playing Morrowind is occupied by the Empire. Empire have build stronghold all around the Morrowind and have their legions all over.

8) The Russian Empire occupied Kazakh and build stronghold too. Having troops in all of them. Most of the former stronghold are became cities now. Like the capital of the Uly Jyz – Almaty were once the Vernyi Fort.

9) Ashlanders (also known as the Velothi) are the nomadic Dunmer barbarians of the Morrowind wastelands. They live in camps of small, mobile huts, herding guar, and hunting wildlife for meat and hides.

9) The 3 Jyzes of Kazakhstan consistent of the more settled people. While Kazakhs always had nomad tribes living EXACTLY as it is shown in the game by Ashlanders. Another astounding similarity.

10) The Nerevarine prophecy. The Ashlanders believe that there will come a time that there Nerevarine will come and unite the Dunmers.

10) There is a believe that some day there will come a Warlord who will unite all of the Turkic tribes and rebuild the Hun Empire under one religion and rule.

Well thats, it don’t take it too seriously  but that is some shocking similarities I found out while playing Morrowind. I was astound by the immersion similar to what we have been taught to us in history classes. Dunmers despising the Empire and other new comers, all those fortresses and legions, Great Houses, customs, religion….

It was a feeling a played a historical Kazakhstan in the fantasy perspective

Thought that will be interesting to others. Try read wikia about the Kazakh if you feel that this cant be true. Feel free to leave a comment

that was pretty interesting, thanks. Especially the legend about the changing of appearances. I'm not sure if the writers actually borrowed the legends, but the way you presented it, I would be surprised if they didn't.

Well I'm not sure about the Jyz but are they council-based oligarchies? Because that's what the great houses are. Also I would consider House Dres to be more akin to Orta Jyz as Dres is a house of farmers and plantations.

The ashlander nomads can be compared to many nomadic people throughout the world, Mongolian nomads for instance. I would consider the Houses to not be solely political factions but their own countries that are unified under the grand council. Each House has it's own culture, ways of life and creeds as well as their own government.

I don't know if it's specifically this culture, but there are definitely links in the real and fictional cultures as you present it.

Morrowind was based on a lot of places, times and subcultures, so it wouldn't surprise me if a little Kazakh were thrown into that melting pot.
