Morrowind.exe crashes but changing the filename works

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 7:18 pm

Hi,

I'm having a strange issue with Morrowind (Game of the Year) on my Vista (32 bit) laptop. What's happening is that whenever I run Morrowind.exe with or without MGE tends to crash shortly after reaching the Main Menu; However when I change the filename to anything but Morrowind.exe, the game works just fine & can do anything I want ingame, including loading save games.

Unfortunately that means I don't get the benefits of MGE or FPS Optimizer 1.96 & am stuck on trying to get the original filename to work without crashing so I'm hoping someone might have a solution for my problem.

Thanks
Shonai

This is a first, near as I can remember. What possessed you to try renaming the file?

All I can think of trying for now is starting the game with your anti-virus turned off.

Actually that came about accidently when I made a backup of the original file & I clicked on it instead of the original file & to my surprise it worked just fine.

I've tried going offline & turning off my anti-virus & firewall with no success & is rather baffling as I used to be able to run Morrowind just fine before I had to re-install Windows & everything else; it only came up with that issue when I re-installed the game.

It sounds like MGE isn't being removed properly, if renaming the file works. Are you sure d3d8.dll is out of the Morrowind folder and anywhere else Windows could be loading it from?

Do you also mean deleting/renaming the dlls in the Windows/System32 & Windows/winsxs folders in addition to the ones in the Morrowind folder?

No no no, don't delete anything form Windows folders. Only these in Morrowind folder.

I've just tried that & it still does it, I even removed the MGEgui program to see if it would help.

I even tried un-installing Morrowind & removing all remaining files from the Morrowind folder. Next I rebooted the PC & then installed Morrowind again followed by just running that program which yielded the same results as listed in my original post but without the mod programs installed (MGE, WyreMash, etc.)

Do you have any other ideas or solutions to my problem?

You can't run Morrowind.exe like that instead I suggest you should use Morrowind Launcher.exe to bring up the game menu and from there click on "Play". That should run Morrowind according to it's design, but if don't find that exe file or launch the game from that menu than it's more likely that you have an issue.
