morrowind first timer

So i had never even heard of TES back when morrowind was released and i remember thinking it looked interesting but not really for me.Didnt have a computer for gaming or an xbox so i never got to give it a shot. When oblivion came out i was really pumped for it.i had seen pictures and video previews and read hands on previews and thought the game looked incredibly ambitioius and amazing. having never played en elder scrolls game i didnt really know what to expect but my hopes were high. i was hooked instantly after i escaped the sewers and began to wander. i had never felt the same sense of freedom and adventure that i got from oblivion before. it really blew me away and after maybe 500 hours i was done with it. i was now a huge fan of Tes but i didnt even think about getting into morrowind.it just looked too archaic and didnt interest me.i never thought id be able to get into it and that oblivion had probably spoiled it for me anyway, being a newer entry. when skyrim was announced and i saw the trailer i had huge expectations for the game and scoured the net for videos and preview stories constantly until it was released. and for the most part skyrim really delivered for me. it was beautiful, epic, deep and just so immersive.ive put roughly 400 hours in across a few characters and i have definitely enjoyed it but it didnt give me the same feel as oblivion.everything about skyrim seems better to me but i just remember loving the [censored] out of oblivion more.nostalgia maybe.anyway after the 400 hours i clocked in on skyrim i really has a good feel for the lore and it became a large and enjoyable aspect that i hadnt really appreciated before.i love collecting and reading those books. so after reading countless complaint threads about skyim and oblivion and hearing all the stories and reasons why the series was dying and how great morrowind was i finally had to check it out for myself. and it just felt like i was missing a huge part of the lore and that if i played morrowind i would have a better sense for the history and would at least be able to enjoy the story if not the archaic gameplay.. well ive been playing morrowind for the past two weeks and havent gone back to skyrim. im playing the original vanilla version of the game and it has honestly amazed me. this game came out so long ago and it is no doubt bigger and in many ways better than skyrim. i am blown away by the detail of everything and the atmosphere is incredible. the way you go about doing quests with actual descriptions of landmarks and directions is the most impressive to me and this needs to be brought back. screw the compass and world map from skyrim the morrowind system is leagues better and way more fun to explore. morrowind is actually challenging and rewarding in a way that oblivion and skyrim could never be. somehow the horrendous draw distance and constant fog even add layers of awesome atmosphere. after 80 hours in i feel that i have barely scratched the surface and i almost feel weird saying that i am enjoying this more than skyrim. this game has real soul and regardless of the combat mechanics it has definitely stood the test of time. i am impressed, and while i loved skyrim and oblivion, very dissapointed in the way the series has changed.

i concur i played it when it first came outand i loved it i was so excited about oblivion and when it came out i was thorougly sad at the failure they had achieved i logged well over 400 hours in one character and havent even finished everything i could do i appreciated skyrim but it still wasnt the same it felt more like fable one(another xbox game that had a sequel on 360 that failed to impress me)

also the way you conversed ith people in morrowind made it so much easier just skim for what you need ignore the rest of whatever they said no long winded explainations

So, you prefer Morrowind over Skyrim? Good for you! :)

...However, since your wall-o-text doesn't really give any insight on the topic of "Skyrim", and this discussion forum happens to be about "Skyrim", I suggest you go here: http://www.gamesas.com/forum/6-morrowind-general-discussion/

Skyrim reminds you of Fable?
Odd, because I think Kingdoms of Amalur has more of the "Fable" feeling. At least for me, anyways.

Crazy eye bleeding wall o text aside, I completely agree with you TC and I'm glad you're enjoying Morrowind.

This part especially:

Welcome to the more experienced TES club.

screw the compass and world map from skyrim the morrowind system is leagues better and way more fun to explore. morrowind is actually challenging and rewarding in a way that oblivion and skyrim could never be. somehow the horrendous draw distance and constant fog even add layers of awesome atmosphere. after 80 hours in i feel that i have barely scratched the surface and i almost feel weird saying that i am enjoying this more than skyrim. this game has real soul and regardless of the combat mechanics it has definitely stood the test of time. i am impressed, and while i loved skyrim and oblivion, very dissapointed in the way the series has changed.
I agree.

Today the amount of hand-holding in games makes them less exciting and rewarding. Generally less brain use is required as the game tells you everything and you just follow arrows. I guess this has been made to increase sales (not frustrating the younger audience). Exploring and combat isn't exciting if the game tells you where everything is before you spot it with your own eyes. Since Oblivion I've had to mod hand-holding features like compass markers out of the game before I've started to enjoy playing the games.

I hope that after the next console generation there's enough disc space to add voice acting for things like directions. Good quality voice acting isn't cheap though. In old games like Morrowind where everything was just text things like directions weren't a problem. Everything in the text was easy to fix later in the game's development. Rerecording voices later is so much harder. Too bad today AAA games have to be like action movies instead of books to sell...

I don't think you need to get rid of the compass. Many people do enjoy it. Keep it toggle-able like it is now. But they do need to bring back the actual directions and descriptions that makes it possible to play without the compass. It should be so simple to cater for both types of people...

I'd actually be fine with them just saying "go do this" or "go here" or whatever, and then just having the directions in my journal or quest log. I know some people will say it's an immersion breaker because they don't actually say it but you know what? It's a hell of a lot less of an immersion breaker than that [censored] [censored] arrow.

Sorry if that's hard to read or understand It's late and I'm sleepy. :turtle:

To save audio file space they could just recored this one line for each voice actor: "Let me write the directions for you on this piece of paper...."

Yeah, of course. We'd need a journal where it's written down. I can see just having NPC's tell you directions, without having them written down would be an issue. Just, you know, actually give us the information required to play without the compass!

I was just saying that I wouldn't care if they didn't say it out loud to the PC. Just to avoid the voice acting issue mentioned above, as long it's written down that's all that's needed.
