Morrowind freezes on loading saves

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 6:11 pm

Hello, I have vanilla (no mods) Morrowind GOTY installed (not Steam, regular DVD case edition). The game runs fine, untill I try to load a save when in the game world. Whenever I confirm the "Do you want to load save? YES/NO" choice, the game freezes and remains frozen untill terminated in task manager. The game is completely frozen, no music plays, no sounds can be heard. The cursor freezes. The game freezes in the same way on exit to desktop, however that does not bother me much.

What I want to point out is that theopening movie plays OK, Bethesda logo plays OK, and the first save I load is OK (i.e. when I start the game and load from the main menu for the first time, I appear in e.g. Balmora and everything is fine). Only when I die or when I decide to load a save when already in the game world, the game freezes. The game freezes in interiors as well as in exteriors.

What I tried so far:

- running the game as admin
- selecting various compatibility modes
- moving the game out of Program Files (manually, I cannot change path in installer)
- cleaning registers (with Registrry Cleaner)
- turning off music in-game and sound in Morrowind.ini
- reinstalling sound drivers
- applying morrowind.exe optimizer, Morrowind Code Patch, MGE, 4 GB patch

My system:

HP Z210 workstation
Xeon E31240
Windows 7 Professional 64bit
4 GB RAM
Realtek audio
GeForce GTX 460 SE

Oblivion and Skyrim run fine. I have been searching various forums, many people report the same problem, however I have yet to find workable answer. The tips, I found, I tried (above). Thanks anyone for your comments.

You can't change path in the installer? How so? I can change it every time(Granted i don't have the GOTY version).Moving the installation folder manually probably won't do you any good because the game writes entries into the Windows registry.Just a shot in the dark here, but try turning off User account control.

Thanks for the tip, my User Account Control has been off since I installed Windows 7. I think it is better for everybody :-)

I have the excactly same problem. I think I've never before played Morrowind with this computer. Have installed it three or four times and wiped everything away in between. Also tried installing different filepaths, administrator mode and so on.

Specs:

MSI P45 NEO3-FR
Intel Q6600
Club 3D HD 4850
6GB 800MHZ DDR2
WD Caviar 640GB

I am playing through steam and have a similar issue. It will not load a named saved game. It will load the autosave. I have tried most of the above and have tried saving the autosave as the named game save and overwriting it. No good. Any help would be appreciated as it seems the other Elder Scrolls hate my machine. I am running on Vista and initially the saved games did load.

TIA

I am encountering similar problems with 2 pc' s both of which have windows 7, 64 bit operating systems , one is a brand new computer and i noticed that software that was previously working, stopped working following a windows update it also appears my operating system is now corrupt as features like chkdsk don't work , My problems may well be hardware related particularly with the new pc, but my guess is that a clean install of windows will probably fix any software issues you are having.

This is quite a common issue if you have debris from an old Morrowind installation on your pc , you don't get the option to change path because the game installer thinks the game is already present.
