Morrowind Game of the Year Editions (Differences?)

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:03 am

Being a huge Elder Scrolls fan I've sort of become a collector of sorts. I own the original Morrowind Special Edition for PC, Oblivion Special Edition and Game of the Year Edition. I was looking to pick up a copy of the Morrowind Game of the Year to finish out my shelf but I came across something that puzzled me. As far as I knew, the Morrowind GOTY was this: http://www.imageupload.us/images/1273023645.jpg

However, after looking around, I found this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41go%2B1vuvQL.jpg

It appears to be a larger box, similar to that of a collectors edition, but it's Game of the Year Edition. One person had this up on Ebay, but when I contacted them they told me that their actual product didn't match that picture but rather it looked like the first image I linked. However I later found a few other auctions selling used versions of that "larger box" version with real pictures of it. I don't want a used one so I was going to wait to find a new one, but I'm totally puzzled about this.

Not entirely sure what's the difference, but the larger box version is an old one that I've seen sold in Best Buy. Not sure, but I think it's similar to Blizzard's Game "chests" where it contains a guidebook, and copies of the main game and it's expansion in seperate cases.

I got the one in your second link a while back (Best Buy I think). The discs come in a single case (The first one does too I believe). Comes with the standard manual and a nice map. I do not recall anything else being in the thing.

Edit: Found the box, its not that large imo, basically the same as the first box just switched from a vertical design to a more horizontal design.

Cool thanks man. I do like the idea of the horizontal design as it looks more unique, but if I can't locate one it's not a huge deal.

This has continually eluded me - from what I understand, there were two releases of the Morrowind GotY. First, there's the horizontally-oriented one, which included a physical copy of the manual and a map. Not entirely sure if it was the individual Solstheim-Vvardenfell-Mournhold maps stitched together, separate, or just the standard Vvardenfell map. These eventually disappeared off the market, and then came the emergence of the "budget release" which is more common (or perhaps it was out at the same time as well?).

I've never encountered any photographs of the larger set (its contents as opposed to a scan of the box), but I'd definitely like to get one if only for a contiguous map of the game. I was rather surprised to find a map of Cyrodiil and the Shivering Isles included in Oblivion's standard keep-case GotY after never having found the Morrowind maps outside of the vanilla and standalone expansion boxes.

There's also a regional difference with the Morrowind GotY, at least for the less impressive release. There's a UK edition wherein the entire game comes on a single DVD within the keep case, but there's no map whatsoever and the manual is provided on PDF. Not sure if later releases of the American copies were updated to do this as well.

It seems I don't have the map or the manual anymore, but I did find this (Which I do believe is the actual map that shipped, it seems familiar enough) http://www.freewebs.com/woodpro/morrowind_map.jpg . Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the horizontal GOTY sets were replaced by the vertical ones because of size. I wouldn't be surprised if stores complained about the fact that the box took up far more store space then it should, (Really it was just a 4-disc container, a manual, and a folded up map). I think the map shipped with all American GOTY editions. Shame that I don't know anyone with one of of the vertical ones, so I don't know for sure.

I did a quick search and I guess http://fessicsfavorites.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/complete-morrowind-map.jpg is the map that shipped with the GotY edition. The overview of Mournhold seems rather amateurishly placed (albeit no differently from the SI in Oblivion's map), but the folds running across the image pretty much imply this is a scan from someone's copy.

Aww, you found a better and larger version than mine. Thats the map. Was extremely helpful in finding places when I first started playing.

Speaking of GOTY edition, the UESP has official plugins downloadable. Are these already included in the GOTY edition or should i download them?

Thanks, i will. These seem similar mini-add ons as the orrery, spellbooks and horse armor for Oblivion. Except the ones for Oblivion weren't free.

And thanks to whoever posted that map too, that should prove useful.

Now then, can anyone confirm or deny if this map is included in the "newer" (vertical) packaging on the GOTY edition?

I didn't get a map (or anything besides the 4 CDs) with my copy, which is http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:IvUL2JEGMsOL6M:http://img.budgetgaming.nl/boxarts/PC_morrowwind_TES_GOTY.jpg&t=1 almost, only with a http://www.benintendo.be/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/ubisoft.jpg in the corner. Bought it in The Netherlands.

Apparently there's a map and manual on the disc, but I never checked.

That is the version I bought way back. I enjoy having the map, I've always thought a full-size poster of it would be awesome to get framed and hang on the wall.

My GOTY(the second image the OP linked) didn't come with a map. It did come with everything else though.

Same. I got it at Best Buy, and it came with 4 disks (The basegame + the Expansions + The Construction Set) and 2 manuals, one for Morrowind, and one for the expansions. Not sure if the Official Plug-ins are already included.

When I bought Morrowind, it was the big horizontal box. Very eye-catching design, by the way; otherwise I probably would never have found Morrowind.

It was on a bargain shelf, so it could have been a returned box. Anyhow, I don't remember there being a map. There was the standard little Game of the Year multi-CD box with Teen rating, Construction set CD, Morrowind, Trib, and Bloodmoon CDs. There were standard manual(s) as well, which I admit I didn't read. Big box, but there actually was not a lot of fluff included with the game.

I was lucky enough to get the last copy at Best Buy.

And, no, the official plug-ins aren't included.

You know, this maybe why I can't find a map. I swore there was a bloody map, but I have a terrible memory (A really bad memory) I could possibly be remembering that WoW map I got, or the EQ2 map I got....

I have my GOTY from the re-release that ubisoft did a while back. All the files on a single DVD with a special startup autorun to help you install it in the right order.

The manual is on the DVD, but the map is not. In the case it only has the DVD, that mean oyu need to have an orginal and not a re-release to have the map.

I own the plain original release, but I have been on the lookout for horizontal GOTY for a while. No luck. Everyone on ebay is just selling the boring re-release.
