Is Morrowind Gone?

Post » Fri Nov 26, 2010 3:40 pm

Rumors and things read on the UESP have lead me to believe that Argonians, Orcs and Nords as well as the previous Daedra invasion have completely decimated Morrowind. It'd definitely be cool but is it true?

No, not really. Now, when that meteor sitting frozen in time above Vivec crashed down into the city around 30 years after the events of Oblivion, yeah, Morrowind was completely decimated. Argonians and Nords did some damage as well.

Read the book. The UESP is fraught with misinterpretation.

Basically, here is what happened. Just before the Oblivion Crisis, the nords were attacking Redoran lands, as is the custom ritual for nords coming of age, drinking binges, and so on. They also invited some orc friends, because orcs are also quite tough and like a good fight.

Then the Oblivion Crisis came, and many dunmer settlements were beseiged, and even the powerful, and daedra experienced Telvanni were having lots of trouble. However, the end of the Crisis came with Martin's sacrifice.

Now that they're not in a position to fight the whole time, a bunch of researchers and mages set to make sure Lie Rock (the Ministry of Truth) doesn't fall (and at its original velocity no less. And before you assume, it wasn't because of the loss of power from Vivec, but the loss of faith to Vivec). They constructed the ingenium for the express purpose to harness a daedric prince's power, specifically Clavicus Vile as he has a raging thing for souls. At first the ingenium required a LOT of souls, then it became fine tuned to require less people, but those with more powerful souls. However, Vulhon(sp?) in his extreme envy of Sul, used Sul's girlfriend (whom he also liked, but made this a case of if I can't have her, no one will) as a sacrifice for the ingenium. Sul became furious and took her off the machine. It ends up breaking, casing Vulhon and Sul into Clavicus' realm. Lie Rock falls, smashing (what I'd assume) a very large portion of southern Vvardenfell. This also causes tsunamis to form. Then Red Mountain erupts and really makes life hard for most people, and most likely ashes a large portion of Morrowind. After that, the argonians invade, forcing anyone who wasn't already to make a trip to Solstheim to go immediately or die. The farthest the invasion force goes, that is currently known, is Vivec, as Sul comes back from Oblivion forty later to wind up coming out of a gate in front of a large amount of argonians during the middle of some ritual.

Also, the seas around Vivec still boil, the land is still covered in a few feet of ash, and this is a good fortyish years after it crashed! And a good portion of southern Morrowind, likely Dres held lands, are now part of Black Marsh.

The Infernal City. Look at your local library for it.

Hellmouth gave a succinct summary.

Morrowind is basically a craphole now. But there was a massive volcano in the centre. Go figure.

Also, to put some perspective of how dangerous Red Mountain is, Red Mountain is roughly half the size of Olympus Mons (the largest volcano in the solar system). This means it is larger than any volcano on Earth.

Not saying you're wrong, how did you come to that conclusion/where did you get that? That's cool.

I took an map with a scale and did a rough measurement of Red Mountain. Not saying it is completely accurate, but it worked at the time.

EDIT: Here is how I figured out Red Mountain's length:
Hrmm, anyone know how large Vvardenfel is? Not in-game-wise, but lore-wise

EDIT: Nevermind, did my own rough estimation. The island itself is ~650 kilometers on the widest section. The thinnest (and middle) section is ~500 km. Red mountain has a ~150 km radius, and the island is ~700 km assuming this http://www.imperial-library.info/maps/n-enc-tamr-map01.gif is accurate

For a RL comparison, Mt. St. Helens has a radius of ~6km at its base, and Nix Olympica has a length of 600 kilometers across its base. In short, Red Mountain is only roughly half the radius of Nix Olympica.

So what you're saying is... Lorkhan's heart is on Mars?

Dispatch the spaceships at once.

Also, evidence in the books indicates, to me, that the Ministry of Truth crashing into Vivec City happened within a few years after the events of Oblivion. The back of the book says "40 years after the Oblivion Crisis", and when Sul tells Attrebus about Vuhon, he says (p. 213) "He vanished into Oblivion forty-three years ago".

I thought that was implied in my little summary there.

It was, I just missed that part. I was thinking about what the person above you said. My mistake.

Also, Shor's heart is not on Mars. The star god, the Void Dragon, lives there, sleeping, waiting for when the universe is ripe for the picking to awaken and have his necrons wipe out all life to feed him.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I like Morrowind... But seriously, I wonder how the surviving Dunmer are managing themselves in Solstheim. (The Skall must be preety ("angry" off) with outlanders invading their lands. Lol, its ironic that the Dunmer are the outlanders now. Hopefully the Dunmer will be able to reconquer Morrowind and bring it back to its complete glory (or maybe they will blame it on somebody who died long ago and wait for him/her to be reencarnated just so that he/she and fix this whole mess up).

EDIT: I apologize for copying the entire post and using a large part of the space.

Use -snip- next time

Anywho, MK dropped off a hint that the nords are going to be helping the dunmer people get back on their feet.

Personally, I can't wait to see that. I think it's just amazing to see the Nords put aside thier differences, and help the Dunmer they've been long warring with for centuries, to help them while they're down. I'd like to see an equal population of Nords and Dunmer in Skyrim, if there's been time to repopulate by the TES game set there.

As far as I know, the Skaal haven't been warring with the dunmer, so it's not like the two have been fighting for centuries. Also, the guys at Thirsk only like to hunt, drink mead, and see who can kill the biggest game.

So it pretty much means the southen and most likely the core of redoran Houses and the ashlanders are either dead or lost all form of society turning into besieged wanderers.
The northen houses and towns either fleeing to solstheim or rebuilding and reinforcing their lands.

It would be good going back to morrowind in this light seeing a whole nation pretty much on its knees, when you had some influence in the circumstances that led to the events.

I am going to have to buy / borrow the book now.

Well they were'nt warring with the Imperials either but they were mad at them when they started constructing on Solstheim

Yeah, but they really didn't do much about it. It was the lycanthropes who pretty much wrecked the place, and bad output from the build-your-own-town that caused the Imperials to pretty much leave.

I'm talking about the Nords from Skyrim. I think a new alliance between the Dunmer and Nords would be great,

you know, thinking of nature and how well she can fix herself up. and especially how fertile volcanic soil is. in forty years that would all be a verdant jungle. just overflowing with life. nature makes a comeback very very quick. hawaii is not a black rock. chernobyl is forested up with lots of wildife. and i have seen way too many places that have got overgrown in just a couple of years. this is not realistic. someone must really hate the dunmer out there.

That rock was more than a little unnatural, though. The seas are still boiling thirty years after impact. It was a projectile launched by Sheogorath himself.
