Replaces Morrowind's ingame map with a texture map. (http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt297/Vality7_2/Elder%20Scrolls/Random/mwmapreplacer.jpg)

Maps

Install
  • Backup Morrowind.exe.
  • Install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26348 (requires http://www.python.org/download/) to your Morrowind directory and run it.
  • Install custom map of your choice to the Textures directory.
  • To revert to Morrowind's original map, run Morrowind Code Patch (MCP), or replace Morrowind.exe with backup.

Notes
- This won't make any permanent changes to your game, all map data is still saved to your save file.
- Land added by mods do not appear on these maps.
- Map markers do not appear on these maps.
- Mouseover placenames do appear, though some are off center.
- The paper map is not very accurate - it would need a lot of editing to align it all.
- If using MCP you'll need to rerun the map patch after applying MCP patches.
- This is incompatible with MCP/FPSO map expansion, so disable them.

Hypothetically, I'm guessing you could use any map you wanted-- just replace the texture as you would with any other mod.

Looks absolutely stunning, but no map markers is a deal breaker...

I may make a version with an ocean like that. I'm working on a few various maps, including labelling the colour map. I originally made 4096x4096 maps, which are twice the size, detail, and zoom, but they have alignment issues, see http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt297/Vality7_2/4096sm.jpg, the player cursor there should be in seyda neen. If this can be resolved I'll redo the paper map with the higher resolution as well.

Hypothetically, I'm guessing you could use any map you wanted-- just replace the texture as you would with any other mod.

Yes, but the maps need to be aligned and resized to fit Morrowind's coordinate system (or the maps above) if you want them to be accurate.

Morrowind draws the map markers directly onto the original map, they aren't a seperate layer. So there isn't anything that can be done really, besides adding markers onto these maps.

I'm not sure I understand. You're saying that the texture for the vanilla map already has the location names on it? And when you visit them, it just makes it visible on the map?

no, the square things that appear on the map when u find them are drawn on (so when u go to that location the square appears because everything appears in big squares, markers squares just have a yellow box on top).

OK, so... if this map is still subject to the "fog-of-war" reveal in-game, and the markers are normally revealed by taking away the fog-of-war in a particular block (when you get a "Let me mark it on your map" dialogue), it ought to be possible to insert a (tastefully) pre-marked map instead. Is this just fundamentally an image replacer or has it changed the fog-of-war functionality too?

Wow, really nice! I have the "paper map" from the Collectors Edition, and it's nice to have one also in-game ;)

Thanks, Vality7!

This looks great!
I've played MW so much I basically have the map markers memorized, so I won't really miss them. The colour map is worth it!

And it's great to see a new release from you :)

The game does not "reveal" a fully marked map texture as you explore it, the map is created and updated as you play, it's not a premade texture like these.

When a map marker is added to your game, it permanently burns the gold square directly on to the original map, same with explored terrain. But because this new map sits on top of the original map, there is no way to see the original map, or its markers. This mod does not remove any functionality or change how the map system works, it simply patches the game to display a texture inside the map window instead of displaying the game created map.

The original map, with any newly added map markers and explored terrain will still be updated and saved to your save game file.

It's beautiful~

If it only were compatible to the MCP map patch and thus to TR.

Amazing replacer. One of the final things that is needed to consider any global retexture to be a complete one.

it simply patches the game to display a texture inside the map window instead of displaying the game created map.

Emm, how many efforts one must put into the work to replace ingame map directly (if it is stored in Morrowind.exe) with a new one?

This is pretty cool. One cool map also would be making a map that looks like it was drawn on paper complete with torn edges and fold creases.

This doesn't appear to be working for me.

I placed the file into my textures folder and ran the patch (which only flashed a window for like 0.5 sec) but nothing changed ingame.
I don't use the MCP map extension so that can't be the problem.

Any advice?

Make sure you have Python installed http://www.python.org/download/, older python versions may not work so try the latest version.

Just to clarify, the texture goes in the textures folder, and the patch should be run from the Morrowind folder.

does this affect the little map window while running around in-game? This looks incredible!!!! I would like to know the process for making the map image, for I would be interested in reproducing a TC map in similar fashion.

All I'd need to do to revert back to my original Morrowind is restore my backed up exe, right? It makes no irreversible changes?

That's correct. I should really update that patch with a UI and better documentation now that people are actually using it.

At this stage no, the eastern half of TR would be cut off like the original map did. I have no idea if that can be fixed, but if it can I'll do a TR version.
