Morrowind/MGE Benchmarks

Post » Tue Dec 29, 2009 1:37 am

Please take the time to answer this extended survey. All answers are optional.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Q86KCZT

to get your FPS counter in game, you have different options. I recommend using MGE. But any will do.
1. Morrowind.ini: Show FPS=0 to 1
2. MGE : Under Misc tab, below options: Show FPS.
3. FRAPS. http://filehippo.com/download_fraps/

  • The location for benchmark can be seen in the survey page.
  • It doesn't matter if your game is modded or not. Please state it in survey though.
  • Survey is in three parts, for Morrowind, for MGE distant land, for MGE distant land + shaders. (You can set macros to activate DL and shaders ingame.)
  • Report your MAX FPS. You can get it while looking at sky or ground.
  • Report your min FPS. You don't have to report stutters.
  • Your average is the average FPS when you do a 360 turn.
  • Shadows are buggy, so I recommend to turn them off.
  • Set view distance to max.
  • Do not use FPS optimizers.
  • You don't have to post the results inside the thread. You can post here optionally if you took the survey. But please don't post it here alone. Please use the survey instead.

My pick location is, you know in seyda neen, after chargen, there is a barrel with a magic ring. In that area, I want your FPS:

Maybe we should all look in the same direction too? I usually have more FPS if I stare at the floor so that wouldn't be accurate.

I put min, max, average. It is OK if you're getting high fps when looking to ground, report it as max. It could be any direction that you're getting your min FPS, with mods and or without. And average is when you do a 360 degree turn, report your most stable FPS.

It is not a contest as I mistakenly write there. I want to keep it simple. My hope is in the progress we get answers to:

Two person with similar rigs reporting very different FPSs, and that is leading the question why and finding other problems.

Some very insane numbers like average 200 FPS, which is giving us the idea of what is actually needed for Morrowind.(I believe there is a majority of people playing the game at <60) Is it mods or just a hardware bottleneck? And what is that bottleneck exactly?

You might want to report your OS, and video driver version too.

Good idea. The real target of this survey is CPU. GPU is optional.

Hi, vtastek. As always you have unusual ideas. :) That's good. But this test is not correct. If I look in the land FPS twice. We need screenshots of the exact positions. And the AI settings also affect the FPS.
And what about the RAM?

And what about the RAM?

Am I quirky? Cool! :P For the test being incorrect, my motto in this one is "Bring it ON!" I don't want one number, but 3: Min, max, Avg.

If things go well, in the end, if I can prove my point: I will just say after a certain threshold(CPU) mods, view distances, AI, texture replacers don't matter at all. :whisper:

As of 2010, even a low end computer should meet minimum requirements of original Morrowind. Any Ram after 256 MB should be enough, or little impact on FPS. I can suspect the RAM timings too. But it is a far stretched theory. And any modern GPU should be more than enough. CPU is definitely the least common denominator.

I can provide a screenshot. I picked that area, because there is something going on there. :excl: It is a well-known spot too. It is very easy, look down, look up, 360 degree turn. It would take 5 minutes(and you can create a new character at the process.) :) Post min, max, avg.

I want most people to contribute so want to keep it simple. But I can ask for more information I guess:

Add as much as information as you want, but at least report your CPU and Average FPS.

Nobody posted, it really breaks my courage. Maybe you want anonymity.

I made an anonymous survey.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Q86KCZT

Please take it. All questions are optional, you don't have to answer all of them.

Just wanted to say that I do plan to post some info this weekend (I think that these figures will be useful to have, and that its a great idea to try to aggregate what we can), but that there's no time to check right now. Sadly, the past few weeks have been rather Morrowind-less.

Thanks NMZmaster. :foodndrink:

I think this is nice, the survey was a good idea. Internet is full of surprises. You can find anything for free. :D

If I was a developer, I would probably changed MGE source code to display survey link after creating distant land. :) Or maybe the sourceforge page can be edited. I think I have permissions to edit some pages. ;)

Great idea vtastek. I'll surely participate. :goodjob:

Iirc Psyringe opened an purely excellent thread about Morrowind benchmarking some time ago. Maybe his findings can help to interpret the gathered data of your survey.

Edit:
found it! Here's the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/877881-benchmarking-morrowind-and-mods/page__p__12813404__fromsearch__1&#entry12813404.

Thank you, nONatee!

I have read it like numerous times, like other performance threads. There are some conclusions that I disagree. Like the view distance having no/less impact on performance, for me it has a very big performance hit. I think by going low and high, I jump over the *bottleneck*. And resolution is important too but for MGE related stuff.(Most of the shaders performance is relative to screen resolution.) And there is FOV, killing even supercomputers.

But there is one thing I agree, CPU is affecting performance of everything in Morrowind. Scripts, geometry, physics(:)), animations, UI responsiveness.

In my tests, I found out the thread loading feature is actually working. With Windows 7's super-fetch, I never encountered a single loading bar in exteriors. And with some RAM-HDD optimizations, you can get rid of the 'pause' too. The actual pause duration is again, defined by CPU not content. In a fast enough computer, you can not even notice it. (I still think that pause is totally unnecessary, and can be completely disabled.)

I also followed some guides about performance and my FPS in Balmora went from 12 to 60. And my max FPS in exteriors is 70.(This is all without MGE) My max FPS in interiors is 80. So I feel like, after this point on, it will take whatever I throw on it as CPU cycles. And I have installed some heavy mods since. I can see 20+ NPCs wandering around Seyda Neen and Balmora. Right now, it is so fast, I can't even set bartering gold. It jumps more than I want in a single click. :P

edit: But it's not enough, with shaders, distant land, and reflections, FPS can reduce back to low teens. I need at least 120 base FPS.

I noticed loading orders, GMSTs and such have a performance hit. I have to test those, but I feel like even one bad positioned mod can ruin performance in a low modded environment. I have more than 80 mods, that I maintained by mash and mlox and nothing bad happens performance wise. I feel like I can add anything from now on. (I will gather those for a guide later.)

So, I think I actually fixed the performance problem! I think my PC fits minimum or (more like recommended but not for Morrowind/MGE) requirements. (According to the 60 FPS theory, :D, my side is 24 FPS + motion blur) Now let's find recommended/actual requirements. I say min 150 FPS is actual requirements. And higher is for MGE. :o (We will have shadows soon, better to be ready!)

PS. I had to omit laptop cpus. If one has a better list. I can put those. Also you can revise your survey later. It is limited to 9 questions, but I can put more stuff inside a question. So I am open to advices.

I took the survey, but to post generally what I submitted:

OS: Windows 7 x64
CPU: Q6600 @ 3.0gHz (lowered overclock for the warm months :( )
GPU: GTX 260 core 216
Sound: Integrated
HDD: Intel X25-M g2 80gb
Resolution: 1680x1050

No MGE, full mods: 40-60fps in that location, 58 average.
Full MGE, full mods: 12-30fps in that location, 20 average.

Statics at zero minimum, thirteen cells view distance, three active shaders. Let me know if you wanted anything else :)

Oh, and though I don't know the exact number offhand (will update later), if FPS is uncapped I can get to several hundred FPS. Lots of mods really drags that down.

Out of curiousity, what sort of changes did you make to gain so many FPS in Balmora? With everything running, I see 12-20fps in Balmora, 15fps average. Out in the wild it tends to be more like 25-30 average.

I'd like to see your suggestions for performance changes as well vtastek. I have a similar system to the guy above (ati HD5700 is only difference) and I only get 15 fps average in the fps test location (fully modded with mge). I get an average in Balmora of around 10. Would be good to see a list of fps heavy mods for Morrowind actually.

Morrowind is a pretty terrible thing to use for a benchmark. First of all, everyone has to run the same sequence exactly in order for any numbers to be meaningful (like a demo, a cutscene, etc.) There's no way to do this, so there's really no way to get any numbers with which to make meaningful comparisons. There'd also have to be a standardized methodology employed (identical view distance, AI distance, occlusion culling on/off, etc.)

Secondly, Morrowind has a terribly unoptimized engine. For what it is, it performs terribly. Most people see better performance running Oblivion.

It's an interesting idea, sure, but there's really not much that can be learned from it.

You're right about your points. But you should understand my point in this. I say it doesn't matter: modded, AI-view distances, HDD speeds and such. They can have +-10 FPS difference at most. Only CPU is important. With this survey, only with a couple of attendees yet, I can see higher rigs or similar rigs than mine, getting <10 FPSs. I get min 50, without MGE. (And I wonder who is happy when getting min 6 FPS. :stare: )

Now that tells a lot, don't you think? (Wait, that is... I think I have a fix for everyone getting low FPSs. :o)

PS. I will create a more restricted alternate survey. I keep first simple, I thought I would get more participation.
PPS. I will try to make a guide. I didn't invent a new thing, I was frustrated again one day(a couple of weeks ago) of Morrowind performance (:P), I saw two links. Followed the recommendations, and they worked. It really JUMPED. From 12 to 60, without MGE. :D

[Question 1]
Question=On a clear day you chance upon a strange animal, its leg trapped in a hunter's clawsnare. Judging from the bleeding, it will not survive long.
AnswerOne=Draw your dagger, mercifully ending its life with a single thrust?
AnswerTwo=Use herbs from your pack to put it to sleep?
AnswerThree=Do not interfere in the natural evolution of events, but rather take the opportunity to learn more about a strange animal that you have never seen before?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA1.wav

[Question 2]
Question=One summer afternoon your father gives you a choice of chores.
AnswerOne=Work in the forge with him casting iron for a new plow?
AnswerTwo=Gather herbs for your mother who is preparing dinner?
AnswerThree=Go catch fish at the stream using a net and line?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA2.wav

[Question 3]
Question=Your cousin has given you a very embarassing nickname and, even worse, likes to call you it in front of your friends. You have asked him to stop, but he finds it very amusing to watch you blush.
AnswerOne=Beat up your cousin, then tell him that if he ever calls you that nickname again, you will bloody him worse than this time.
AnswerTwo=Make up a story that makes your nickname a badge of honor instead of something humiliating.
AnswerThree=Make up an even more embarrassing nickname for him and use it constantly until he learns his lesson.
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA3.wav

[Question 4]
Question=There is a lot of heated discussion at the local tavern over a group of people called 'Telepaths'. They have been hired by certain City-State kings. Rumor has it these Telepaths read a person's mind and tell their lord whether a follower is telling the truth or not.
AnswerOne=This is a terrible practice. A person's thoughts are his own and no one, not even a king, has the right to make such an invasion into another human's mind.
AnswerTwo=Loyal followers to the King have nothing to fear from a Telepath. It is important to have a method of finding assassins and spies before it is too late.
AnswerThree=In these times, it is a necessary evil. Although you do not necessarily like the idea, a Telepath could have certain advantages during a time of war or in finding someone innocent of a crime.

Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA5.wav

[Question 6]
Question=While in a market place you witness a thief cut a purse from a noble. Even as he does so, the noble notices and calls for the city guards. In his haste to get away, the thief drops the purse near you. Surprisingly, no one seems to notice the bag of coins at your feet.
AnswerOne=Pick up the bag and signal to the guard, knowing that the only honorable thing to do is return the money to its rightful owner?
AnswerTwo=Leave the bag there, knowing that it is better not to get involved?
AnswerThree=Pick up the bag and pocket it, knowing that the extra windfall will help your family in times of trouble?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA6.wav

[Question 7]

AnswerOne=Decline his offer, knowing that your father expects you to do the work, and it is better not to be in debt?
AnswerTwo=Ask him to help you, knowing that two people can do the job faster than one, and agree to help him with one task of his choosing in the future?
AnswerThree=Accept his offer, reasoning that as long as the stables are cleaned, it matters not who does the cleaning?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA7.wav

AnswerOne=Drop the sweetroll and step on it, then get ready for the fight?
AnswerTwo=Give him the sweetroll now without argument, knowing that later this afternoon you will have all your friends with you and can come and take whatever he owes you?
AnswerThree=Act like you're going to give him the sweetroll, but at the last minute throw it in the air, hoping that they'll pay attention to it long enough for you to get a shot in on the leader?
Sound=Vo\Misc\CharGen QA9.wav

[Question 10]

[Level Up]
Level2=You realize that all your life you have been coasting along as if you were in a dream. Suddenly, facing the trials of the last few days, you have come alive.
Level3=You realize that you are catching on to the secret of success. It's just a matter of concentration.
Level4=It's all suddenly obvious to you. You just have to concentrate. All the energy and time you've wasted -- it's a sin. But without the experience you've gained, taking risks, taking responsibility for failure, how could you have understood?
Level5=Everything you do is just a bit easier, more instinctive, more satisfying. It is as though you had suddenly developed keen senses and instincts.
Level6=You sense yourself more aware, more open to new ideas. You've learned a lot about Morrowind. It's hard to believe how ignorant you were -- but now you have so much more to learn.
Level7=You resolve to continue pushing yourself. Perhaps there's more to you than you thought.
Level8=The secret does seem to be hard work, yes, but it's also a kind of blind passion, an inspiration.
Level9=Everything you do is just a bit easier, more instinctive, more satisfying. It is as though you had suddenly developed keen senses and instincts.
Level10=You woke today with a new sense of purpose. You're no longer afraid of failure. Failure is just an opportunity to learn something new.
Level11=Being smart doesn't hurt. And a little luck now and then is nice. But the key is patience and hard work. And when it pays off, it's SWEET!
Level12=You can't believe how easy it is. You just have to go -- a little crazy. And then, suddenly, it all makes sense, and everything you do turns to gold.
Level13=It's the most amazing thing. Yesterday it was hard, and today it is easy. Just a good night's sleep, and yesterday's mysteries are today's masteries.
Level14=Today you wake up, full of energy and ideas, and you know, somehow, that overnight everything has changed. What a difference a day makes.
Level15=Today you suddenly realized the life you've been living, the punishment your body has taken -- there are limits to what the body can do, and perhaps you have reached them. You've wondered what it is like to grow old. Well, now you know.
Level16=You've been trying too hard, thinking too much. Relax. Trust your instincts. Just be yourself. Do the little things, and the big things take care of themselves.
Level17=Life isn't over. You can still get smarter, or cleverer, or more experienced, or meaner -- but your body and soul just aren't going to get any younger.
Level18=The challenge now is to stay at the peak as long as you can. You may be as strong today as any mortal who has ever walked the earth, but there's always someone younger, a new challenger.
Level19=You're really good. Maybe the best. And that's why it's so hard to get better. But you just keep trying, because that's the way you are.
Level20=You'll never be better than you are today. If you are lucky, by superhuman effort, you can avoid slipping backwards for a while. But sooner or later, you're going to lose a step, or drop a beat, or miss a detail -- and you'll be gone forever.
Default=The results of hard work and dedication always look like luck to saps. But you know you've earned every ounce of your success.

I'm still tweaking it. The places to look, beginning(thread priority, buffers...), water, lightattenuation. (You can look to my mods and weather color tweaks as well! :))
Note: Beware, there is no water! So use with MGE water.(Ripples are back now!)
PPPPPS. MGE tweaks:
check cpu idle, set it to zero.
check thread loading.
PPPPPPPS. Not sure about this but, mod the game as much as possible. :chaos:

Just completed the survey.

Comparing to what NMZmaster posted:

OS: winXPx32 MCE
CPU: Pentium D @ 3.0gHz
GPU: 8800 GT SC 512MB
Sound: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
HDD: 7200rpm 160GBx2 RAID 0
Resolution: 1280x960 (4:3)

No MGE, full mods: 21-65fps in that location, 40 average.
Full MGE, full mods: 10-37fps in that location, 24 average.

Statics at 50 minimum, 3 cells view distance, 3 active shaders.

Tried some of your ini tweaks and I actually get a slightly better result with what I normally use, specifically:
ThreadPriority=1
Interior Cell Buffer=10
Exterior Cell Buffer=32

I only use Quadratic lighting

Not sure if these made a difference:
Background Keyboard=1
[Weather] Timescale Clouds=0
[Water] World Alpha=0.75

[edit] just figured out what 'Timescale Clouds' does - when set to 1 it also figures in whatever the Timescale setting is to determine the speed at which the cloud layer moves across the sky, so clouds move faster/slower relative to the passage of time based on the timescale: 1 is extremely slow ... 30 (default) is only influenced by the 'Cloud Speed' settings under each weather section ... 60 is 2x faster, etc.

Done, results entered below. Surprisingly, I learnt that taking away shaders did [censored] all to improve FPS, it appears that rendering the distant land is the pig of a thing to do, would be nice to see the GPU doing this. :)

OS: Win 7 Ultimate, 64bit.
CPU: i5 750 @ 2.67GHz
GPU: Sapphire 5870
Resolution: 1440x900 (16:10)

No MGE, full mods: 17-28fps in that location, 20 average (Obviously there is something else here but TBQH I CBF fiddling with it).
Full MGE, full mods: 8-25fps in that location, 11 average.

Statics at 200 minimum, 20 cells view distance, 4 active shaders.

Well, I made a brief attempt at the benchmark by disabling distant land in MGE however I think that one of my mods was dependent upon distant land being enabled as it would eventually crash at some point in the first building. (Probably the ownership detector mod as it seemed to happen when I looked at tables...)

Anyways I think that I still can take a guess at my FPS w/o distant land enable: pegged at 30 +/-0.1. (This may have been interfed with by ATI A.I. haven't bothered to turn it off yet. MAX FPS in .ini is at 240)

With distand land(MGE 119 SVN build) I can tell you that ANYWHERE I get between 8.00000000000000000000000000000000000000001 and 8.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 FPS period. Performance seems to have dropped somewhere in MGE by quite a bit, but for some reason it's pretty stable and I'd guess that my avg. FPS is precisely 8.5

Actually game play "feels" fairly fluid for 8FPS so I don't know if it's off but both MGE's FPS counter AND ATI Tray Tools FPS agree. MGE seems to drive the GPU harder than Oblivious as I get higher temps and higher GPU load with MGE than in Oblivious(and MUCH lower FPS. Too bad Oblivious game mechanics were dumbed down so much and the quests so simplistic that even a caveman could do it ;D.)

Vista 32b
4GB DDR2-800 (3070MB to Windows 32b)
MGE 119 SVN build
1680x1050 screen res

Anyways BTW whomever made that survey you're missing(i.e. I have)
Intel Centrino 2 P8600 2.4GHz (2 core IIRC they dropped Centrino so it's a Core 2 Duo again)
ATI Radeon Mobility 4850 HD 512MB GDDR3 (desktop RV770 @ slightly lower core/memory clocks 500/850, 800 unified shaders)

[EDIT]
Yeah, Catalyst A.I. screwing with things. Turned the damned thing off and get 9-12FPS w/MGE now.

Now, to try with distand land off and see what I get. (ATI drivers svck hard, and don't even talk to me about their linux/Xorg drivers.)
[/EDIT]

[EDIT2]
Still pegged at 30 +/- 0.1 FPS distant land off w/ A.I. off...
[/EDIT2]

[EDIT3]
BTW Morrowind IS single threaded, so it will ONLY run on a single core AND it is ALSO CPU bound although running MGE, obviously, increases GPU dependence.
[/EDIT3]

..........

You don't have to remove MGE to disable it. In my tests I never saw a difference. Just untick use distant land and hardware shaders in their tabs. If you can bind them to a key(via macros), it would be easier.

For missing cards and chips, that's not a problem.

Now for the results, finally we got some real business there.

Morrowind:
Min - 100
Max - 240
Avg - 140

Morrowind/MGE
Min - 20
Max - 60
Avg - 30

Now a true customer who has the right to bash MGE performance! :P

The monster rig:
AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE
Nvidia GeForce GTX 275 GT200B 1 896
Windows Vista 64-bit

Per core Speed - 3500
# of Cores - 4

Now my anolyze from the information there:

Max 240 FPS!!! The ini says "Max FPS 240" by default and changing it doesn't work. But at least we know now, that at least it is true. (I told you so!)

Min 100 FPS, now that's nice. And average 140. Now that's more like it.

What I wonder, if the user did tweaks (as I did), the values can go any higher?

2. MGE performance seems really bad. Lowering 100 to 20, it is unacceptable. User has nice values for distant land, nothing insane. But using 6 shaders, which may be a little high.(But shouldn't compared to games like Crysis) Still I would expect more from an 275 GTX.

If user is reading this, please fill us in with more info. Like shader list, distant land texture/mesh quality.

You see it is hard to detect if something in MGE broken or terribly optimized. To see the real difference you need to overcome Morrowind's performance bottleneck.

Above user is a very good beta tester candidate.

To compare 3500 MHz to other chips:
3 users having a CPU with 3000 Mhz cores reported their FPSs as:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Min- 30
Max- 60
Avg- 40

Intel Pentium D 830
Min- 21
Max- 65
Avg- 40

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Min- 40
Max- 60
Avg- 58

All users reported they have modded Morrowind heavily, except Pentium D. Very interesting indeed. 3 different architectures reporting similar FPSs.

PS. AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE has total of 8.5 MB cache in three levels. Totally badass.

I don't buy this "FPS in Balmora went from 12 to 60". I won't believe it until a definitive explanation and guide of how it happened appears in this thread. There was nothing in that ini which would have made such a huge jump. Why stick up this outrageous claim when you cannot prove it?

Just filled out the suvey, thought i'd post my answers here too. So everyone can see

CPU: Intel Q6600 GO Stepping @ 3005mhz
GPU: nVidia 260 BFG OC 216 cores
RAM: OCZ Platinum 4GB @ 1066mhz

None MGE FPS:
Min: 60
Max: 85
Avg: 72

MGE FPS:
Min: 16
Max: 23
Avg: 18

MGE settings
Min static size: 25
Draw Distance: 10
AA: 8
AF: 16
# of active shaders: 4

Shaders Used
knx_SSAO_v09
sunshaft_v002a
ImprovedWaterCaustics06a
GIMP_HDRBloom_v1_3_vt2

As you can see, quite a difference, but i personally think the survey needs more options, such as more detail on the distant statics on the distant land tab to be more accurate. Things like distant blur, water reflection settings, fog, and all 3 distant statics options
Cos i could set the Min Size to 25, and the rest could be over 1000

There are obviously alot of other things that can cause variations in performance, such as plugins. It may be worth people doing the test without any plugins loaded on a clean new save, with and without MGE. Maybe it would be handy to upload a clean start save so that everyone can try that? I dunno, just an idea

Oh, there must be a misunderstanding, that value is without distant land and shaders. As for the ini, it is what I did. My FPS should be higher in the first place. I did lot's of things, one of them(or combine) should have lifted the curse. Beside ini, I mash'm'loxed my mods. And other users in the thread reported an avg of 50-80 FPS anyway. All ranking around 2800,3200 Mhz CPUs. (+-~10) I have a T9600.

The idea of this survey is more about Morrowind's performance. If Morrowind is getting high FPS, MGE's impact can be reduced to 60 FPS(distant land(25), statics(10), shaders(30)) and game can end up around 60 FPS if base FPS was 120+.

@SGMonkey,
I will add more options. You can revise your answers anytime.

PS. Tribes, good choice my friend.

Morrowind FPS is truly pure terror to even begin testing :D my FPS with a few shaders range from 40-45 average (while playing) to 23-24 average depending if Catalyst AI works or not. When it does work (i have the 4870x2) i can double the FPS, right now it doesnt work. Don't know if depends on the driver, or something else.

Running around looking at stuff in the area that vtastek recommends:

45 max
27 min
29-30 average

- kind of terrible imo.. i used these settings/shaders:

MGE settings:

10 cells view distance
50 min statics size
AA off
16 AF
Supply HDR info to shaders (etc) ON
89 FOV
Distant Blur off (this eats 4 FPS if turned to "1")
FPS auto thingies turned off..

Shaders: sunshaftv02, truebloomG6_3 with HDR activated (those 2 shaders eats 18 of my precious FPS :( )

Other: 1920x1080 res, V-sync off, mipmaps set to "quality", MGE rev 119 phal dynamic.

Without MGE (this is how my FPS needs to be... ALL the time ;) ):

Max: 277
Min: 77
Average: 80

OS: Win7 x86
Comp: Comp: Intel C2D E8400 @ 4.13GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI 4870x2

Another thing everyone has failed to mention is the resolution they play at. I myself play at 1920x1200

Also, are they running FPS optimiser or not?
And what about MGE's FPS limiter?

EDIT: Just tested it out playing the game with MGE enabled and all the same settings at 640x480 res, and i get a silly high FPS, and changing the Max FPS in the ini does limit the FPS. But you need to remember that most monitors are only 60hz, so setting the max FPS more than 60 doesnt really make any sense, apart from bragging rights
