Morrowind or Oblivion?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:13 am

Hey, guys! Skyrim is my first TES game, and I really love it. But I kinda bored right now cause I've completed main quests and all guild quests. And while waited Dawnguard to come out, I'm thinking to buy Morrowind or Oblivion. But, what should I buy? What's better? Can you please tell me their ups and downs?
Thanks in advance ^^

Morrowind by a long shot. Morrowind has been my favorite in the series, and Oblivion was considered my worst. And I've played Daggerfall and Redguard as well.

But it also depends on your playstyle. I imagine you'll find Oblivion to just feel like a severely downgraded Skyrim.

This shouldn't really be here, it'll probably get moved, but it depends really. Oblivion has better combat, Morrowind is more RPGish I hear.

Morrowind by a long shot. The graphics are very old by todays standards, but if you can play Skyrim now then you can play a heavily modded Morrowind.

Note in MW character design is actually going to matter, so put some thought into it.

Morrowind by far Oblivions the weird inbred child of Morrowind and Skyrim it's close but just not right.

If you can cope with the seriously dated graphics, Daggerfall is free to download, and is enormous (due to everything being procedurally generated).

Oblivion has better combat

Oblivion has more modernized combat. It's not in any real way 'better'. Morrowind's combat is based off traditional RPG combat, as in you swing your weapon, and based on your agility and weapon skill, as well as your enemy's agility and block/armor skill, determines if you get a hit, and how hard it hits.

I honestly prefer it.

Heh, I bet most will say Morrowind.

Both Oblivion and Morrowind are great games, and I think Oblivion gets way too much hate. Just check out them both on YouTube and make up your mind. They're two games with very different settings, and I think they're both worth playing.

I liked both erpsonally. Never understood all the hate on oblivion, I think I preferred it to morrowind but that may be because I played it first.

I'd say Morrowind as well, though there are a lot of bugs and glitches still in Morrowind, as it's an xbox game (unless you're getting pc) but they're rare and sometimes fun to find lol. The story in Morrowind was much more....epic? I don't know, but Morrowind had much much much more to do than oblivion did, the guild challenges/quests for morrowind were actually challenging and drew you in instead of just sending you out on another quest to rank up. Locking picking got good in Oblivion though, allowing you to pick a master lock if you knew what you were doing without worrying about losing a thousand lockpicks, while Morrowind made you level up first, and while Morrowind didn't technically have quick travel, they still have transportation and spells that allow you to transport between either marked locations or to main cities.

I'd love to play Daggerfall as well, but escaping that first cave is too hard

Morrowind and Oblivion are very different games. But they are TES games. If you want a complicated indepth RPG then get Morrowind. If you want something a little closer to Skyrim then get Oblivion. I enjoy both myself.

Is that so? So it's decided, Morrowind, then. I hope you're right. Thank you ^^

You may have actually convinced me to look for my old copy and try it out again.

Oh, also, morrowind has a number of fantastic mods. Check out the mod community when you are done with your vanilla experience.

Agree'd, so far I've loved all TES games, and as they've advanced through the years, the games steadily get better in different ways, I feel that they pick certain things to fix and tamper with and depending on the reaction to it, build up on it, like acrobatics and athletics, in Morrowind and Oblivion, they played a heavy role in how well you could get around, whether you were jumping miles away in Morrowind without taking any damage, or falling off buildings in Oblivion and surviving, then there's the lockpicking, they just keep tweaking that around lol

don't understand why you prefer it. Really that just makes it come down to the build more than anything. In morrowind I just made a warrior and after a point the combat lost my interest. Was more interested in stories and quests, the newer tes are the only ones where i'm interested in combat. I don't hate the system, but I personally prefer the more modern one.

You could try Oblivion with OOO (Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul). Sorts out the universal scaling, and the guy got hired by Obsidian.

If Skyrim is your first TES game, I'd definitely go with Oblivion. Oblivion is much more similar to Skyrim than Morrowind. Oblivion was my first TES game and I loved it so much that I went back and bought an old copy of Morrowind. I just couldn't get into it. The combat and graphics were too outdated for me.

This is coming from an 360 player though. I have no idea what a heavily modded PC version of Morrowind would be like...

The vanilla combat in The Elder Scrolls Morrowind is the greatest game in the history of the universe.. I remember thinking my game was bugged when I first started playing long time ago, because my sword would go right through my enemies and they were unharmed.

The thing with Morrowind's combat is that it's all determined by stats wheter you hit or not. It doesn't matter if you swing your sword in the right place or not.

Haha, what is this filter? I can't express my opinion about the Morrowind combat xD

Morrowind is better (for me atleast) but i would say go for oblivion first as the graphic change between skyrim-morrowind would be a bit weird and might get annoying. It would probably go better if you just oblvion then morrowind as they are both great games, Personally i think MW is better but....

Both.

But i must warn you, play Morrowind on the PC, for the melee combat system makes your eyes bleed and is unbearable without mods... Unless you like RNG combat where skill doesnt come into play, just luck.....

I think it makes more sense. Somebody who trains in a blade skill should be able to dish out much more damage than somebody who just picked up a dagger for the first time. In Oblivion and Skyrim, it's just "Bash eachother, and whoever has the most health, most health potions, or the most powerful weapon wins."

Sorry that I don't like modern.

Guys, he said that Skyrim is his first TES game. Jumping back to Morrowind is going to feel like a disconnect to him. Oblivion is much closer to Skyrim in terms of technology, interface and accessibility.
