Morrowind vs. Oblivion

Post » Mon Sep 13, 2010 6:02 pm

I like Oblivion better mainly because of the improvements to combat. Oblivion improved many things about Morrowind but the setting was just to generic. I understand why the made the capital a peaceful looking place but it was just too bland in terms of atmosphere. Other than the atmosphere and the amount of weapons/armor Oblivion blew Morrowind out of the water.

Ive never known any 2 games be put against each other so much...

What i will say is it appears 90% of people prefer the elder scrolls game they played first. I can honestly say i prefer Oblivion, and i actually enjoy its atmosphere more than morrowinds. It's just personal preference though.

BTW is tgere anyone that prefers daggerfall over these two? out of curiousity lol.

I love Daggerfall and Morrowind about equally, although I've kind of been spoiled by all the DaggerXL previews and refuse to touch the original game until then. :P

:hubbahubba:

With DaggerXL in development it could totally overshadow Morrowind for me...

I've played both morrowind and oblivion a good bit, and I enjoyed them both. That being said, morrowind is probably my favorite game of all time, and oblivion is not high on my list. The best way I think I can put it is that in morrowind I always felt that I was just scratching the surface of an enormous continent, a world all of its own. I felt as if I could never possibly become acquainted with the endless exotic locations and cultures. I felt that way when I started the game, I felt that way when I crossed level 10, I felt that way when I crossed level 20, etc. Always more to see, discover, do. I never felt that way with oblivion. Once I'd seen one town, I'd pretty much seen them all. And then one day I just ran smack out of things to do. I got bored. I love morrowind. My love for oblivion is more limited.

To me, the main difference between the two is the question of, "Do I want to immerse myself in a game, or do I want to immerse myself in a world?" Oblivion is something that was made with the casual gamer in mind, while Morrowind encouraged more intuitive thinking on the player's part. It all depends on what I feel like playing at the moment; a romp through a game where baddies are like butter to a battle-axe, or a game that taught me to think things through after I rushed into a mine at level 1 and got killed by some person with a knife.

If I'm feeling a bit masochistic, I'll occasionally have a go at Daggerfall.

This is all opinion, but, I'd have to say:

  • Morrowind Graphics Extender
  • Morrowind Code Patch
  • Better Bodies
  • Better Heads
  • Better Beast Bodies
  • Better Beast Heads
  • Backup Vanilla Heads (some are quite awesome)
  • Tamriel Rebuilt Maps
  • Various Telvanni Stronghold expansions
  • Less Generic NPC's
  • Vampire Embrace (supposed to conflict with LGNPC, but I've never saw it)
  • Great House Dagoth, if you want a realistic experience of the other side of the main quest
  • Sixth House Mod, if you want a cliché "bad guy" approach to the main quest
  • Neccessities of Morrowind, for a realism eating/drinking/sleeping mod.
  • Morrowind Visual Pack
  • Search around for any retextures that suit you
  • Search around for any armour/weapon mods that suit you

Here's my ridiculously huge mod list, if you're interested:

There are some mods that'll change the way everything looks and some that'll give you more to do and visit.

Then there are those that completely change the game. Ever since I started using complete Morrowind, I spend a ton of time building furniture and making outdoor home everywhere and smelting and making stuff. And with Blasphemous Revenants you can kill someone, trap their soul, cut off their head, then revive them and make an army of undead.

No mods are essential...except for the unofficial patch and the Morrowind Code Patch. Most mods I use are chosen to support a particular character. However there's a few mods I use in nearly every game:

No mods are essential...except for the unofficial patch and the Morrowind Code Patch.

Thats cause there was so much that was broken, bugged or mistakes made with the games.

Oblivion:
++++ Better graphics, obviously
++ Fun combat
++ Voice actors
++ AI (though it could be alot better)

- Leveled creatures
- Too few weapons/armors etc

Morrowind
++ Immersive, the landscape has more "personality" than in Oblivion
++ More of a "mystical world" than oblivion. Fast travel in Oblivion did this part imo.
++ Enchanted items recharge over time (i hated that you had to recharge at a high cost in oblivion)
++ More skills to pick from
++ Major AND minor skills. Not only major as in oblivion.
++ More weapons, armors and stuff.
++ Better soundtrack than Oblivion imo, aswell as more "epic" sounds when out exploring, making you feel you really are in a different world.

- a bit glitchy
- way too static environment

Thanx for the great list :D

But I do not understand why people forget about "Lilarcor" in the fun stuff; that was a really fun mod.

Well, this turned out to be a refreshingly civil Morrowind vs. Oblivion thread (for the most part). ^_^

Well, uh, th- wor-, er,......
Can't argue with that. I have to say I kinda svck at Oblivions combat system. Perhaps a hybrid of the two. Or at least make it look like your missing the target.
Except bows, they required the same amount of player skill in both games.
There has to be a way to give everybody what they want.
You make a good point, but when it comes down to it Oblivions combat system is the way I would go.

Heres an Idea, keep MW general hit\miss combat system, but insted of just having your weapon clip through the enemy if you miss, have the enemy play a dodge animation to make it more realistic.

In THEORY, I like Morrowind better. The atmosphere was better, MQ was truelly epic, there were more quests, guilds, more skills and most importantly - more freedom.
In practice I play Oblivion much more. So I guess I like Oblivion more IF it's modded to hell.

That's exactly the problem with posting a list like mine. A list is entirely and completely subjective. A list applies only to one person. Take the list in post #133, for instance. With very few exceptions, none of those mods are essential to me. I wouldn't touch most of the mods in his 'essential' list with a ten-foot pole. I don't use Better Bodies and stopped using Better Heads six years ago, etc, etc. And he or she probably feels the same way about my list.

That's how it should be. A mod list exists to customize the game for you...not for the person next to you. To me, Lilarcor is not a fun mod. I don't like it. I'm not apologetic about that. Your idea of 'fun' is different than mine. And that too is how it should be.

I understand, Lilarcor is a masterpiece of fun and irritating combined together. Like an itch between my shoulder blade that whenever I scratch that I feel good. Annoyingly fun. :D

I should look at other lists in this thread as well.

Just a note since Pseron Wyrd listed "The Trouble With Milie" I should point out
that it has been updated and the update is only available on straygenius.com

The update was a minor change but was regarding a really significant problem
with having the quest sequence advance and the problem is a show stopper,
as the quest becomes stuck.

Wow, this is different. A MW vs OB thread that didn't end with yelling and a thread lock. I like it!

I voted potatoes.

I think everyone's yelling at the other Morrowind vs. Oblivion thread.

Morrowind was an interesting world that drew me in, after that, Oblivion despite it's shinyness (which in my opinion was about all it had going for it and even then it got annoying as it lacked the 'grit' of Morrowind) ended up making me feel hard done by. I enjoyed parts of Oblivion and yes it had it's good points but Morrowind stays in the mind with good memories Oblivion for the most part does not).. Morrowind made me want to spend time in the world, spending time in Oblivion felt like a childish action adventure esque experience. Although I may be being too harsh, perhaps I should fire them both up again..
