Morrowind vs. Oblivion

TES: V [censored] everything that is TES! The argonians are two pixels taller, which is absolute bull! And I'm not even going to touch how the grass is three shades of a darker green than what was described!

These forums the day it's release? I can see it too. People love to moan

I think the weirdest thing will be the lack of an Oblivion loyalist crowd. There are still large groups of people who much prefer and defend Morrowind, and some even Daggerfall to this day. I'm not here to question that, and I love Oblivion to death, but unless TES:V is horrendous, I can't see there still being a large Oblivion crowd

Maybe it's because it wasn't as groundbreaking or special to those of us who'd played it. I wish I knew about TES when Morrowind was first released, I can imagine adoring it at the time. But, as someone who played Oblivion first, it's just too hard for me to make the jump backwards

I've played Oblivion for over two hundred hours. I just started playing Morrowind the other day. So far, I'm liking Morrowind a lot more. Then again, that could be because I know nothing of Morrowind, but I'm burned out of Oblivion.

I'm sure some people thought the same thing about a Morrowind loyalist crowd, at one point, back in the days of "OMG, Morrowind iz dumm'd daonn'd fom Daggerfall!"

Both games are good, but Morrowind will run better on your computer. I also find modding to be a little less complex with Morrowind, so it might be easier for your first game. There will be time for Oblivion later on.

I'm going with potato here. I mean Oblivion and Morrowind are fun, but after you finish playing with your potato, you can eat it too.(plus the mods taste awesome)

I started with Fallout 3, then went to Oblivion, then went to Morrowind. I love Fallout 3 the most with Morrowind coming in with a close second. Oblivion was/is fun but it's not even close to coming in third on my list of favorite games. I don't like saying that, and honestly I'd really like to say "I love all of TES games," but I just don't like Oblivion anywhere near as much as I like Fallout 3 or Morrowind. My point is that it was very easy for me to make the jump backwards.

I have, honestly, actually seen some members here that have complained that Morrowind was so dumbed down from Daggerfall that it was the "death" or Bethesda. I was pretty surprised by that. I don't even want to imagine what they thought of Oblivion or Fallout 3. I've never seen someone favor Arena the most, however.

I loved the setting, the story, the immersion and general feel of Morrowind... but as somebody who always plays warriors, the combat ruined it. That hit, hit, miss waltz just infuriated me

I truly like Daggerfall for it's vast space and also joinable temple factions (I Love That!). But as I said all TES games in my eye are all equal.

Arena was the first ES game I played and it gets high marks and it's a classic so you can't knock off hand.

I've seen Daggerfall fans who prefer Oblivion to Morrowind; something about "feeling like Daggerfall" and "returning to the style of Daggerfall" were brought up.

I've also seen Youtube posts that involve people posting "Oblivion is dumbed-down from Arena." Those poor, misguided fools. :nope: It's just not true, period, not in any way, shape, or form.

This is going to be flamed to death. I'll give you exactly what I think. I far prefer Morrowind.

Morrowind is better for the lore it adds, it's more immersive, and everything is more diverse. I also prefer the interface of Morrowind.

Oblivion is a faster paced game. It breaks some lore, and is very cliché. It has better modding capabilities.

In Morrowind, skills matter more. In Oblivion, there is a lot more player interaction. Speechcraft and lockpicking are made redundant, and raising my block doesn't make a bg enough impact, for me. I think Morrowind's system is far better.

Many skills have also been cut from previous games in both cases. Oblivion has even less, since it's cut down from Morrowind, which was cut down from Daggerfall.

The only issues I see for Morrowind are bugs and outdated graphics. But, they're fixed by mods.

Anyway, anything you see here, even my post, is going to be one sided. You'd really have to play a game yourself. If you're low on funds, I'd reccomend Morrowind, though, as it sells for around £3 for GOTY.

Oh, and all of Morrowind's official DLC is free. None of this silly paying £5 for a mod I could have created myself.

  • If you prefer a faster paced game with quite shallow "Good vs Evil" questlines, go for Oblivion.
  • If you prefer a slower paced game, where character skills are immensly important, with in depth quests and lore and grey morality, go for Morrowind.

Graphics are completely irrelevant. Morrowind can look far better than Oblivion, when mods are concerned. It all depends on your system. I think Morrowind has a tad higher fps drop from it, though.

And, the all important phrase that people obssess over in Morrowind vs. Oblivion threads: IMO. About everything I've said. This is what I believe, and you're free to feel different. Don't flame me for giving my honest opinion.

Oh, and if you get Morrowind, play vanilla. I'd reccomend to only use graphical enhancers and bug fixes. You'll want to experience the game for what it is, first.

:foodndrink:

When I play Morrowind, the only mods I use are graphics enhancing mods like MGE. I'm essentially playing vanilla. When I got Oblivion for the PC after playing it on the 360, even after installing 30+ mods that looked appealing to me, I still like Morrowind much more. I can only imagine a modded Morrowind would be even better.

For real, I don't need ninety thousand gameplay and leveling mods and overhauls for Morrowind. ;)

Advocating that it will cause flaming is a bad start to a topic. I am going to leave this open in the forlorn hope that there will be a decent and constructive discussion about the two games - don't let me down please.

IN MY OPINION,

Oblivion has better mods, but morrowind was better as an original game. If you use Morrowind, the modding will be rather... limited, but it has much better story, much better lore, a few more skills, and what seems to me to be a much larger world... though that might be the absence of fast travel. Oblivion has better graphics (to an extent), modding, and some dumbed-down/ more casual game mechanics. I found Oblivion much easier to sit down and play (casual), but if you want a game that really immerses you, Morrowind is the way to go (hardcoe).

But then again my personal ranking for both games were 10 out of 10.

They really are two completely different experiences, you shouldn't compare them, just get both.

Also potato's are epic!

Agreed

What the... this brings an end to all the TES game vs. TES game for me. It really just makes all this seem stupid. I can suddenly see TES 4 vs TES 5 threads in the future and the majority will be for TES 4.
We are getting nowhere with this and it should stop. We should actually push so that we all can get a peice in the next game. To the suggestion thread.

over all, if i disregard the fact that MW engine is older and graphically just older, i think MW slips ahead for me.

there were several backwards steps Oblivion did as a game. though it was going in the right direction imo. I quite liked it. but more flawed than MW was in terms of just the game itself. I'm not even going to take story into account.

tes5 is going to pwn both MW&Ob. at least i hope so< I believe bethesda has screwed it's head back on right in terms of actual game development, budget, and resource. All they need to do now is keep going, But 1) do a real pc port instead of a xbox clone. 2) squish more bugs! and have at least a tiny bit more continued developer support. severe lacking in those 2 things.

I'm so tempted, but I'm not gonna do it.

All I'm gonna say is:

You can swing the weapon all you want but it's never gonna hit the enemy unless your skill is reasonable. Forget the weapon swinging animation and pretend like you're rolling a pair of dice, because Morrowind and its predecessors are based off of an old board game.

If you liked Oblivion for the combat, you probably won't like Morrowind. If you liked Oblivion for the freedom and openness, prepare to get blown away.

If you liked Oblivion for the combat and the freedom/openness.... OMG POTATOES!!

Combat doesn't make the game. While the combat wasn't great, it beat Oblivion in everything else. (ignore graphics and older engine, of course).

Sure, if you don't like Morrowind's combat style, then you won't like fighting. But there are many other things about the game to like it about.

BURRRRR-IIII-TOOOOOOOS!!!!

@Imperfect: I actually prefer Morrowind's combat. I'm just trying to be as objective as I can.

The majority of the people who argue that Oblivion is superior usually boil it down to graphics/combat/engine. Everyone always argues for immersion, but everyone sees something different in their head when they think "immersion."

Here's my opinion. Oblivion refined the core experience of the elder scrolls series and really built upon what the weaknesses of morrowind were. but the cost of this was some of the personality that made morrowind uniue and special.

I completely expect the next elder scrolls to strengthen the weaknesses of oblivion, just the same as oblivion took the weaknesses of morrowind (combat, stealth etc) and improved upon those.
