Morrowind or Oblivion theme?

Post » Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:54 am

I don't think using that song at all, in any time count or orchestration, would be lore friendly for the next game.

{SPOILER WARNING... err... somewhat}

The song is called The Reign of the Septims, and if the Septims no longer rule Tamriel, it would have to be changed to Reign of the Medes. :P

Morrowind's title music is called Nerevar Rising.

Well they are the same notation, and pretty much the same note duration. The only real difference is the time signature, and the instruments involved.

Morrowind is in 4/4 timing and is made to sound more mystical (almost even more archaic), and Oblivion is in 3/4 or 6/8 timing which is usually associated with "pirate" or "sea" music timing, which generally makes Oblivion's theme more triumphant sounding (especially because of the orchestral arrangement).

It's just Morrowind's melody in maestoso

Morrowind's title music is called Nerevar Rising.

Actually it's called Call of Magic. Nerevar Rising is the reprise.

Huh, never knew that. On the special edition soundtrack, it's called Nerevar Rising, and the reprise is called, well, Nerevar Rising (Reprise). Or at least that's the case with the https://www.directsong.com/index.php#/shop/product/MW101b

I voted before reading people's comments so I thought you were talking about the overarching theme of the whole game, not just the title music track. I still vote Morriwind though because it's calm and builds up into the climix with a consistent theme throughout as opposed to Oblivion's theme which sorta starts strong then fizzles out into oddness.

I remember the first time I put the game in when I first bought..man, must have been a good 7 or so years ago?
I watched the credits before the home screen, and then as that beautiful sound crept up to my ears like a sweet aroma shivers ran down the back of my neck, it was just that awesome. ^_^

Which soundtrack is better is completely subjective, and the answer depends solely on personal taste. As for which one I prefer, I voted "both" because I like both soundtracks almost equally. If I were forced to choose one over the other, though, I would vote for Morrowind because I love the build-up in the theme song, "Nerevar Rising". That's simply awesome awesomeness. :goodjob:

Has anyone else besides me noticed the lack of drums in Oblivions theme music?

Edit: I voted Morrowind, just because of them.

Ahh that beautiful Morrowind theme, so classic, so serene. I even made a classical guitar version of it by myself, because I just love that theme :P

I like both....but morrowinds music, title & other was just awesome...like i said in an earlier post, its the best game music i've ever heard.
There is just something about that music that makes the hairs on my neck stand up..and makes me smile from ear to ear.
Maybe its because morrowind was my first elder scrolls experience, which i loved a hell of alot ( who knows )....but the music in that game is just....just....heavenly...a work of art.
PLEASE...bring it back :)

Another thing to mention is that the Oblivion theme song sounds almost exactly like the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song.
I swear, everytime I started to play Oblivion when it first came out, I'd hear a shout from my sisters room, "ARE YOU WATCHING PIRATES?!?!". "No.."

And that same theme was used in Gladiator.

Every thing about Oblivion seemed unoriginal. Bethesda probably thought they should appeal to popular culture. Imagine TES 5 theme being "I kissed a Girl".

Epic soundtracks never suited tes in my mind, to grandiose, a smaller orchestra would be much better.

It is not really about size, it is about orchestration. If they keep it large, they can get a more grandiose sound when needed (it can't be wispy and mysterious the entire time)

Yes actually, I probably am.

However, on more proper respect, I always felt that the music in Morrowind and Oblivion was a bit out of place. It didn't feel right, it wasn't bad(except in the case of Oblivions main theme). I really like Morrowinds main theme, but the instruments didn't fit.

Morrowind has the better main theme, but i feel overall Oblivion has more quality songs in the game.

I want V's main theme to be a violin/ stringed rendition, think it would go well with Skyrim (assuming it's set there)

Honestly, I couldn't really give two [censored] about the main theme of either game. What IS important is the in-game songs. The idle music, the dungeon music, the combat music. In this case, I would say I liked both of them pretty well. I mean, I prefer Morrowind's but that's because I enjoyed Morrowind's setting more, and the music of both games went with their settings well. So, while Oblivion's fit, I didn't totally enjoy the music BECAUSE of the setting (which I, as many of you probably know, did not like one bit).

Morrowinds. Although the rest of MW soundtrack was boring and a "remix" of the main theme. So Oblivions OST was FAR better, but MWs main theme was better then OBs.

And to people that keep on saying "Oblivions is like SO TOTALLY PotC!". Its the SAME Morrowind theme song, with a bit more kick.

Morrowind. It fit the setting better. It also sounded more epic (and I'm using epic in the traditional definition, not the overused, online one). Anyways, I find Morrowind's theme more epic because it starts off very peaceful and minimal, with only a simple melody. However, it crescendos into a full orchestra with chords, melody, and flourishes that make it sound truly extraordinary. It really is beautiful. It sounds victorious and empowering, while still maintaining a tempo and melody that made me feel tranquility and peace, maybe even euphoria. I guess, to put it plainly, it made me feel good. It made me happy. As I have mentioned before, I felt Morrowind's theme better fit the setting. I feel the arrangement focused on instruments that produced fantastic (as in fantasy) sounds. In fact, one could argue that the theme fit the entire story: a simple beginning that crescendos into an epic final battle resulting in harmony throughout the land.

Now, Oblivion, on the other hand, had a theme I really didn't like. It literally was a sensationalized copy of the Morrowind theme. It had the same melody, however it was modified so it would sound more "perilous" and "exciting". They did this by starting loudly and quickly and increasing the tempo, while adding in louder, deeper wind instruments and removing strings. All it did, in my opinion, was make it sound rushed, cheap, and amateurish. At the very least, they could have written a new melody. Morrowind's melody was perfect, for Morrowind. It didn't match Oblivion at all.

That's just my opinion.

I loaded up OB and when the main menu music came on, my brother was like "What's that, Pirates of the Caribbean?"

 It's true, it does sound like that.

Lies, lies, lies... You're the 4th person that said EXACTLY the same thing and always included a brother/sister/room mate in it saying "What's that? Pirates of the Caribbean?!". The joke was funny at first, but no. Just no.
