Morrowind Pausing To Load

Post » Sat Jun 05, 2010 9:53 pm

Hi Everyone,

I recently starting playing Morrowind again on my computer, I originally played it on the xbox and noticed that is pauses to load while traveling outside. It also does this on the computer but I realize on the computer mods and patches as well as some hardware may have the potential to reduce or hopefully completely stop this problem. This is one of those issues that really annoys me just because it removes me from being fully immersed in the game to say "oh gotta' let it load...". I heard of a Mod for Oblivion that loaded everything before the game begins allowing it to run almost seamlessly and i was wondering if there was anything else like that. Even through random google searches I found a person talking about a mod that fixed this exact issue but the website on which it had been posted had moved/was shut down and many mod searches later i found nothing of the like. So is there a mod to allow Morrowind to load better or is this a Computer RAM issue that i need to fix? It probably isn't RAM issue though because I have 1GB of RAM and the minimum requirements for the game are 256MB of RAM, so I have 4x the minimum. Thanks to anyone who can help :) this problem makes me not want to play the game, I've grown very impatient over the years haha. I LOVE this game I just want to be able to stay immersed and enjoy myself. I will probably cry(actually) if this cant be fixed this game has a very deep-seated nostalgia factor for me.

My absolute main problem with the game as well, there's no fix, for Oblivion there's actually a mod that fixed it (to 99% at least) i was really surprised and impressed.

It doesnt even seem to be dependant on the hard drive you use, i have 4 x SSD's in RAID0.. maybe a really fast cpu helps (much better than my 4.2GHz core2duo)..

You might try the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Ini_Settings setting in Morrowind.ini.

If you really want to get rid of loading, maybe running Morrowind off a SSD or RAM disk with a honking fast CPU would be better than any mod could do.

Edit: whups. Vurt you have monster system, if that doesn't still pauses on load, I guess there is no solution.

I've tested running Morrowind on a RAM drive too (even faster than SSD's). It didnt help either. There'a myth with this game going on that a faster HDD helps. Yes, it does helps a little (loading up the game game, and regenerating distant land etc), but it has a very minimal impact on the loading the actual cells, which seems to be a engine limitation of how fast it can do it. For FO3 they really fixed the issue.

:'( haha but yeah, fallout was decent for cell loading. I wonder what that forum was about that i saw then it was like "must have mods" and one was specifically for this issue. Its a little bit heartbreaking, its like reading a book and every five minutes after getting into it you have to stop and let someone pinch you

These are my ini settings:

DontThreadLoad=0

Interior Cell Buffer=1
Exterior Cell Buffer=4

Works pretty well.

They didn't do the loading how I would do it now which would be to have very aggressive predictive loading. So there is always a worker thread (i.e. can run on another core) trying to keep the RAM full of data that may be needed on the approach that empty RAM is wasted and it is always better to load to much than load too little. You can't really blame them as at the time multi core processes weren't common and there was far less RAM available. (2gb+ is now the norm where as when development started it was closer to 128mb)

In windows 7, my cell loads are as low as 2ms. It must be due to Super-fetch. I tried RAMdisk, but that adds too much burden on CPU. Maybe my freeware RAMdisk svcked. Anyhow my Morrowind install is now 5.2 GB so RAMDisk is not an option anymore.
