Morrowind Save File Loading Error

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:05 pm

I believe that the best way to describe this error would be to simply copy and paste what it describes: Unable to locate reference for global script 'CouncilorTopicsTelvanni' . Now, it does ask me if I wish to continue playing, which I agree with, and it allows me to continue loading the game. Thing is, though, I'd like to know the repercussions of this error, if there's a way to solve it, and if not, if I'm able to continue playing without it having to decimate the gameplay quality to any degree. I'm using Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition, if that's any help, so if anyone else has ever heard of this, or knows of anything similar, I'd truly appreciate a response of some sort, or even an answer if such a thing is possible. Thanks!

Have you check how many saved gamefiles you got in the save folder (found \Morrowind\Saves) yet?

If so you need to reduce the amount of these saves to under 250 files, because this is very common problem that might be the cause of your issue. :user:

Looked through the Morrowind File under the Program Files, couldn't find anything that eluded to a save file center of any sort, besides the Data Files, which again didn't have anything that resembled what I'd expect a save file to be, so I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about. Interestingly enough, few hours later, went on again, talked to the Councilors in Sadith Mora, went through the topics, then after saving my game, loaded it, and noticed that the error had dissapeared. One thing I know for sure, scripts within games, especially games this large and complicated, are well beyond me.

Now, there's only one thing still bothering me, and I'm sure these are common issues that people experience while using Morrowind for the PC, so again, I'll simply copy and paste what they are.

Not able to find Foot part in a_tenpaceboot.

Not able to find Foot part in a_tenpaceboot.

Texture "Textures\Tx_ashlands_04.tga" count 3.

Texture "Textures\_land_default.tga" count 3.

Texture "Textures\menu_thick_border_bottom_right_corner.dds" count 2.

I'm purty sure I know that the Ten Pace Boot error is due to the fact that they appear invisible in-game, even though it was supposively fixed for the Game of the Year Edition, yet not entirely sure of what the other three errors could be. Any ideas?

In case you didn't know you should never install any games or tools in the "Program Files", because if you do that you can have a big problem in Vista/Windows7 with the folder(s).

You can ignore "Textures\_land_default.tga" and I think that's normal, but other ones are different and I think you will need to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1134570-morrowind-options-and-play-wont-work/page__view__findpost__p__16616928 Morrowind again. I see no reason to re-install the game.
You probably can't find your Save files because you're on Vista or Windows 7 and don't have Admin control over Morrowind. The quickest way to find them is to look in Compatibility Files, on the bar above all the files in your Morrowind folder.
This error you're getting has nothing to do with having too many save files, anyways.

Post the Load Order of your mods.
One of them is messing with your Ten Pace boots and that global. Both should be simple to fix.

The Texture count warnings are all harmless.

How else do you suppose I was to install it? I've never known any issues to arrise from placing a program within Program Files, since I always thought that that's the natural location they would be sent to. I am using Vista, and as for the warnings.txt, here's exactly what pops up when I bring the loader up.

As for loading mods, I actually don't use any mods, unless they've been preinstalled into the natural game, which I didn't think they were; though, if you mean Tribunal and Bloodmoon, Morrowind.esm loads first, then Tribunal, then Bloodmoon. Would changing the settings have been considered a mod in that sense? I did place the attack options to always use the "Best Attack", so if that in any way could have created this issue, I'll gladly switch it off and learn how to be not-so-lazy for once. To be honest, kind of entertaining to see someone running without any shoes, as though someone stole them right under his feet, and he just hasn't noticed yet.

No, Vista is a terrible OS when it comes to letting you alter files. You really should change the install location.

This is very good idea for future problems, but it likely isn't going to help with your current problems.

Install the Bloodmoon patch http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm just in case. Because I believe the Ten Pace boot problem was supposed to be fixed by Bethesda long ago.

I don't have access to the CS right now, so I can't see what "CouncilorTopicsTelvanni" is used for, but it is likely harmless.
Using Wrye Mash to update/repair your save would likely fix it anyways.

edit: And no, changing the game settings/options cause no problems.

I think the missing parts of Tenpace boots is related to a BSA file (probably corrupt) and that need a reinstallation to fix it.
I'm not sure though.

I've just looked into CS for "CouncilorTopicsTelvanni" and that's a script related to another script called "brownBookScript".

That has to be one of the most entertaining statements I've heard this week. I noticed that each and every time I picked up this certain book, Morrowind would inexplicably shut down. I tried taking it at different times, at angles, directions, what have you, all ending with the same result: Automatic Shut Down. Do you suppose that's what caused the CouncilorTopicsTelvanni script error? I did somewhat find a work-around for that as well, though as per how successful it was, I'm still too afraid to pick the book up. Should I simply avoid that book at all costs?

The problems with "CouncilorTopicsTelvanni" and "brownBookScript" are fixed with the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes3Mod:UMP.
I suggest Version 1.6.4

You'll want to Repair/Update your save file with Wrye Mash after installing.

Alright then, I guess that brings up the final question, how exactly do I update to that version, or obtain the Morrowind Patch Project in general? If I have to install it seperately, will it automatically update Morrowind, and will the save files be updated as well?

So, that's more than one question, granted, yet still, I'm simply afraid that altering the version, or installing something that interacts with the program with alter the save files in some way, deleting or removing "unnecessary data". That actually brings up another quick question while we're at it; I'm about to transfer from Morrowind to Tribunal, yet I'm afraid that the items I have lying on the ground will be deleted in some way. Is this a factual fear, or do I have nothing to worry about?

You can download the patch from that link. It's free.
It is a community made patch (essentially it's just a mod) so you're not updating Morrowind in any way.

What do you mean "transfer from Morrowind to Tribunal" ??
Have you not installed Tribunal & Bloodmoon yet? If not, that's probably why you're having these problems to begin with. Install them, because they fix a lot of problems with the game and update it to the final version.
Morrowind will go through a "parsing" update on your Journal the next time you play, but otherwise it's a seamless and safe transition to add Tribunal/Bloodmoon mid-game.

Wrye Mash is a program for using mods, keeping Save files clean, etc. You don't need to use it if you're just going to add Tribunal/Bloodmoon, but if you start adding mods mid-game you will need to update your save file.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1060141-mod-recommendations-for-new-players/page__p__15392814__fromsearch__1&#entry15392814 has lots of info on were to find info on using mods (if you want to install the patch mid-game) and includes a section all about Wrye Mash.

I'd like to thank the two of you, for putting so much effort into answering my insedious questions, as well as responding in general. I didn't really expect to recieve a response within the next several days, so recieving one a few hours later, really threw me off. The depth of which you two went to answer them, is also something to be commended. So thankyou, Leanardo2 and Pluto, for being patient with my lack of knowledge in this given program, and answering my intrigues to a most satisfying extent.
