Bethesda should feel ashamed for making Oblivion.

Oblivion was even with the problems it had and was better than 99% of other games on the market. Even now a great game to play if you get past the dated graphics and the copy and paste dungeons.

Edit: And level scalling :brokencomputer:

Geez people, Oblivion was a great game! "Bethesda should be ashamed of making it"? That's crazy!

They are just being Elitist, and it will be the same with all Elder Scrolls games,
It goes like this:

Arena Elitists
Daggerfall Elitists
Morrowind Elitists
Oblivion Elitists
Soon to be Skyrim Elitists
People who like all of the games.

I was hyped for Oblivion until its release, but was quickly turned off by it. I can't stand, and couldn't then either, it's terrible models, animations, combat, UI, AI, bland world, gps compass, weak writing, etc.You couldn't pay me or bait me with a free copy of Skyrim to speedrun through the MQ of Oblivion, the whole game just has a gross feel to it that I would avoid if given the choice. Skyrim looks like it will mostly be the game that Oblivion should have been, and I'm kind of regarding it as the proper continuation of the series after Morrowind.

I would just recommend reading all the lore of Oblivion.. Like what happened.. Because they were pieces of a prophecy that were mentioned in the Trailer...

Aside from the leveling Oblivion was/is an amazing game. Sure, it's starting to show its age but so is Morrowind.... Oblivion would be a great way to have a new Elder Scrolls experience while awaiting the masterpiece that will be Skyrim. It may even make you appreciate it all the more.

What I don't get is how people can complain about how terrible Oblivion is because of models, animations, combat and AI, etc, and then go on to say they loved Morrowind. I can say the same thing about TES: III, but I still enjoy the game.

You don't need to play Oblivion, but I strongly recommend it. People just need to stop expecting one game to be like the next, they restart each TES game from scratch, building them to be a whole new game of their own. Things change, and each game has its pros and cons.

Edit: And while the MQ didn't have the best writing, there was still plenty of great writing throughout other areas of the game.

If you've never played through oblivion, I do advise to play through it with mods. There's a multitude of mods that will help with the leveling problems (OOO, Francesco's, T.I.E. etc.), and despite it looking bland with the level scaling and lego block dungeons, there's more cool stuff to find in the game than you'd think.

I would play it just for the isle expansion really. The controls are going to be close or so I hear so would help you get use to it.

But like with most elder scrolls games you can jump right in without to much knowledge of the past ones.

Yes he will, He will miss hours upon hours of gameplay, Just like Morrowind

Hours upon hours of forgettable gameplay. Zombix, you're better off just visiting the Imperial Library for the bits of story you've missed and spending the hours you saved solving world hunger.

Now for the less polarized view. I stick to my opinion that Oblivion's Main quest was largely forgettable, but I do concede that sections such as The Dark Brotherhood quest, Paint quest, etc were great. The game mechanics/environment of Vanilla leaves a lot to be desired.

The game mechanics in Morrowind were hardly great... the combat was terrible but didn't stop it being a great game.

Mods do wonders for Oblivion, and although it still not quite ideal for me- it's still leagues better than the vanilla leveling system. You don't have to play any previous Elder scrolls game in order to know whats going on with the next. At the most they will make the rare reference, mostly fanservice (St jude drove the cliff racers from Vvanderfell! I loved it!) but thats exceedingly rare, out of all the dialogue/notes from Oblivion which are hundreds of thousands, i would say about 10-50 lines are references to previous games.

Oblivion is definitely worth playing, but you need to curve your expectations when you go into it, it is NOT morrowind and is NOT as good as Morrowind was. It's far more mainstreamed and dumbed down in comparison with a lot less lore friendly adventuring (Bandits weae glass armor, maruaders wear dadric armor). If you can accept or deal with that, you should have a lot of fun with Oblivion.

Once you've leveled enough in Morrowind, the combat becomes passable. Once you've leveled enough in Oblivion, every bandit and their mother wore Daedric.

Morrowind was (is) epic, i remember stumbling upon that nord ship in that maze underneath the tomb. And does anyone remember finding Boethias ruins underneath the sea for the first time and being completely in awe?? I spent an hour looking for a hidden underwater entrance to that place! Oblivion had none of those moments! Skip it!!

It's a great game, and you should at some point play it (especially with mods where you can fix the leveling system), but you don't have to play it before Skyrim. The plots aren't related or anything.

Problem is by the time you've played Skyrim Oblivion will just be way to dated.

Morrowind is another type of game. Oblivion and Skyrim will be a lot similar, and Skyrim is in a lot of ways, Oblivion done right.

You either play it now, or forget about it. At least that's how I believe I'll be feeling, so I'm trying to play through the main quests, the factions and the expansion atm.
