Is morrowind still a better RPG?

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:11 pm

seeing as how many people were portraying morrowind in a nicer light than oblivion.. how does skyrim rack up against Bethesda's timeless classic?

and somehow i believe that the third option is still a win for morrowind seeing as how skyrim has had many years to improve upon that game.

I suspect the general opinion will lean toward Morrowind :)

If you wish to use the technical term RPG, then MW is obviously the more "pure" RPG of the two.

is it nicer that you can imagnine and make up stuff that don't effect the game in the least?

no you can do that with every game.

does it have more aspects to facilitate your imagination? yes.

Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion.

Oblivion was just a dumbed down version of Morrowind, and Skyrim took even more stuff out, but at least they added dual-wield and perks to make up for some of that loss. But removing 1/3rd of the game by having such a small spell library and so few viable mage builds is really crappy.

I played Morrowind for a very short time, but it was shortly right before Oblivion came out, so I switched over to that. So how is Morrowind better besides the crappy graphic?

Depends how you term RPG.

RPGing stems from pen and paper games where there was a requirement for detailed stats in order for the game to function.

As such, this requirement spilled over into RPG video games - because they had always been used.

Skyrim dispenses with a lot of the traditional RPG mechanics (which purists consider to be a dumbing down, I consider it to be evolution) such as detailed stats and concentrates on the experience.

I have voted for the third option as I find myself more immersed in Skyrim's world than I have in any other game, and as such I would consider this to be more of a role play (you don't go through life with a stat screen, after all). However, I can see the attraction of tirelessly working on your character, making it the most powerful and effective it can be, which is something that Morrowind handled better than Skyrim.

OB was like a stepping stone and offered more of a watered down version of each. I really enjoyed it, however now that I have Skyrim I can now see that OB was lacking in some respects.

I think you would have to just play MW to get it. I doubt descriptives would make much impact. However, I also believe MW to be subject to it's release timeframe, so you missed out on the wonder I'm afraid, particularly if you already regard it's graphics as crappy. At the time, they were not crappy. So, for you, there is no MW :)

Yes, it is. Skyrim is alright, outshines Oblivion in every way. Its got nothing on Morrowind other than fancy graphics (which if you use MGE/texture mods is a redundant statement) and a more fluent combat system.

I think both are good games, just that MW needed to redo and maybe someday if peoples out there would simply use toolset to remake MW in Skyrim's engine. I was hoping they would and connect that map east of Skyrim where it belong. Further more there is so many other provinces needed to be done as well. Let complete this whole continent please.

Well, if I'm done with Skyrim, I'll give Morrowind a try with the Morroblivion graphic engine (I think that's the right one, not sure.)

I still like Oblivion a lot, especially with the heavy mods that change gameplay in that game. I will wait on Skyrim mods someday when people have made enough for me to download.

saying morrowind is better is like saying goldeneye 64 is a better console FPS than call of duty. theyre both timeless classics, but clearly skyrim and COD are better than their counterparts. only thing better about morrowind was the story, and if you want a good story, go read a book.

Morrowind is still better in every way with mods. Goldeneye didn't have that luxury. Despite that, CoD is better than nothing. Absolutely nothing. Forget Goldeneye, I'd rather play Pac-Man for five hours than have to play CoD for thirty minutes.

A newer game doesn't make it better.

Dragon Age: Origins vs Dragon Age 2.

Morrowind vs Oblivion.

Etc, etc.

I think this is a classic case of eye-candy beats all other considerations.

hardly. are you saying that goldeneyes sideways rollerskate strafing is a solid FPS mechanic, or the fact that you had to STOP MOVING to aim?? or morrowinds blocky movement and combat over skyrims and even oblivions more fluid movement and spell casting?

as great as morrowind is, i couldnt stand playing it after playing oblivion.

the poll is not good , you shoudl add the other otpions to vote only if people tried morrowind , most of the newcomers and forum signed are from 2011 and its the majority of the people that are yelling loudly that skyrim is better , most of the TES lovers , modders and old gamers that have played morrowind say morrowind is better ....

Mods, bud, mods. Combat is the only area in which Oblivion, and by association, Skyrim, have been better than Morrowind. But that all changes with mods.

I've already heavily modded Skyrim as well, and will continue to do so as necessary. Maybe four or five years down the line, when there have been two expansions and thousands of mods for Skyrim, it MIGHT be able to take the crown from Morrowind. But right now it's lacking SO MUCH content and RPG depth as compared to Morrowind.
