Is Morrowind still a good game?

Post » Sat Jul 02, 2011 9:31 pm

Well really my question is. Is Morrowind still worth buying playing at this point?
I am bored, and can't decide if I should buy it on steam($15) or if I should not buy it..
I only played Morrowind for a few hours (4 or so maybe) when I was really young, and my brother tells me the game is bland and boring. But I know the game sounds awesome an Oblivion was great, and I never had problems with graphics or lack of voice acting.
So I wish to hear your honest(even if most likely bias, considering the forum) opinion.

Morrowind is awesome and I am currently playing again, it's worth buying and since you can get the pc version you get access to mods. To answer your question Yes it is worth it.

Do you like traditional RPG....as in the way they were before consoles took over?

If so, then yes, it is a great game to still get. If you'd played nothing but RPGs that have come from consoles.....err.....you may stuggle with it.

Well I played some Baldusgate back in the day, though not much. And I played a lot of Oblivion, which I think is still 50/50?
I am mostly a computer games to be honest.
Anyway, I think I will wait the next 9 days to see if steam is going to sell Morrowind on special offer just like they did Oblivion, if they don't I will just buy it after wards.
Edit: to be honest, do not know what you consider Consol RPG?
Knights of the old republic?
Dragon Age?
Mass Effect?

Edit: Oh and I play (or used to.. got no one to play with) Table top games, which I guess is a little like old school RPG's used to be.
(not DaD but Warhamer of sorts, but still... a little alike, maybe.. lol)

I've just recently played a character that completed all of the main quests (with expansions) for the first time, and I gotta say, I LOVE THIS GAME. I say buy it. It may take some time to get used to it (maybe 10 hours, and a couple characters later), but there are many mods that allow you to customize the gameplay just how you want it (the two I recommend the most are a mod to adjust the running speed, because the vanilla game is very slow, and the Morrowind Code Patch).

If you're not worried about graphics, and text dialogue, the only thing I think you might not like is the "dice roll" combat. As in, when you try to hit an enemy you won't always make contact, BUT if you're skill is high enough (you should always use weapons you picked as your major skill) than this won't be very noticeable.

Probably it is. Based on how you said that graphics and lack of voice acting don't bother you I think buying it now is still just as worth it as it was 9 years ago. Well, actually not quite as worth it because you won't have nearly as much time to enjoy it, but you get the idea. ;)

I'll quote what I've written in another thread:
Morrowind is not better than Oblivion in every way. In some ways it is, in other ways it isn't. I personally think that overall it is the better game, but there are a lot of people who prefer Oblivion. Have you played Oblivion? If yes, then you can read http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind_for_Oblivion_Players to get an idea of the differences.

Morrowind is older and because of that the graphics are more primitive. NPCs don't interact with each other unless a script tells them to do so. They only interact with the player character. Compared to Oblivion the animations are worse, the combat is clunkier, and stealth isn't as good. NPC mostly stand in the same spot 24/7, though some might wander around a little.

But on the other hand the art direction is better (or at elast I prefer it), the factions interact with each other, there is a lot more of them (apart from the 3 standard guilds you also have the Imperial Cult, the Tribunal Temple, the Imperial Legion, 3 different noble houses, the Morag Tong assassins, and with the Bloodmoon expansion you can even join the East Empire Company). There is also a lot more different types of weapons and armor and the world in general is richer and much more sensible. There is no level scaling and the creature leveling is much milder. There is no such thing as common bandits wearing Glass Armor and using Daedric Weapons. Rare items are actually rare. You can find hand-placed artifacts if you explore on your own. There are functional mines and fishing villages. And the Dunmer have a very strong culture.

In short Oblivion is a more convincing presentation of a less convincing world whereas Morrowind is a less convincing presentation of a more convincing world. If all you want is some dungeon diving action you'd better stick with Oblivion. But if you want to explore a fascinating new world Morrowind is the best.

I'd also like to add that since you'd be getting the PC version, there are mods for all the major flaws in case any of them become unbearable.
