Morrowind Stops responding on exit

Post » Tue Sep 22, 2015 12:46 pm

sorry if this has been asked lately, cannot seem to find this specific problem anywhere,

Whenever i try to exit the game it stops responding and if i try and alt-tab it goes black, but stays on screen no matter what i do. I cannot access any other program, not even the Task Manager. The last 2 times i have had to restart my computer just to get rid of it.

Thanks for any help if possible.

For my game setup, I have thread loading disabled in the ini as it crashes if I try to exit (with it enabled). Do you have thread loading enabled?

If you have MGE XE, uncheck the "Thread Loading" box if it is checked. If you are going by the .ini, set the "DontThreadLoad" line to 1 if it is 0 (If you do use MGE, you dont need to touch the .ini).

Morrowind almost always crashes on exit if you've been playing for more than 30min or so, that happens to everyone. But usually by simply pressing the button on the crash/warning report that pops up MW will continue to close properly and there is no problem.

What you're describing seems to be a far harsher crash than the typical "I love to crash on exit" that Morrowind is known for.
What OS are you on?

I don't think Thread Loading has any bearing on this. That has to do with how cells are loaded in the game, and shouldn't cause/prevent any crashes on exit.

Windows 8.1, which likely has a lot to do with it.

and yeah, that crash report only shows up sometimes, when it does, the crash is nothing more then a minor inconvenience, when it does not show up, it is SERIOUSLY obnoxious.

I use Windows 8.1 as well. Where do you have your Morrowind folder installed?

I have Morrowind in its own folder among other games and I have very rarely any crashes.

It is the Steam version of the game.

Still, where do you have it installed? I even have Steam installed along with my other games in a folder I created in My Docs. The UAC in Windows 8 is so intrusive that even if disabled, it still throws fits about anything happening in Program Files.

What about your other games in that folder? Any issues there or just this one?

not really. Skyrim and Oblivion crash every so often, but it is generally just a simple CTD and normal game crashing that the game normally have.

You dont have to worry about the folder location for now. What do you have your sound software set to in the in game menu? Hardware or Software? You could try switching that out and see if that helps. I have Googled audio related crashes before, and one I had in Tribunal was solved by me switching the sound option.

hm, not sure, but i have noticed that my sound is completely uneffected by anything i do in the audio options of that menu, so maybe that is part of teh problem.

The fact your Morrowind is crashing on exit is not the problem. That can happen often to everyone. The problem seems to be that sometimes it crashes in a way you can't close it correctly.
Are there other programs running when this happens? Morrowind often gets cranky when other programs run behind it.

Have you tried disabling the Steam overlay?

Change "BackgroundKeyboard" to 1. This allows you to alt-tab out of game. So when the game crashes on exit, you can alt-tab out and exit the game. This won't stop the crashing but allows you to switch windows, or coming to desktop on pressing windows key.

Also in MGEXE try running the game in 'windowed mode'. It has reduced my 'crashing on exit' problem to almost nil, although occassionally it does crash on exit.

It almost never happens to me atm, but it used to happen to me whenever I exited the game while a vampire-related script was running. For instance, being killed by a vampire and having to exit the game always resulted in a CTD. I don't know if it's also the case for you.

Running any program behind Morrowind will increase chances of crashes, in my experience.

Yes it's well know that using mods increases crashes too.

I used to get constant crashes on exit. I set my affinity to run on a single core and have not had any crashes on exit since.

No mods, I meant vanilla vampire scripts.
