DB in morrowind?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:19 pm

I have yet to play this game, I was only six or seven when it came out, but my friend is letting me have it.
I have played both oblivion and skyrim but thought they were lacking. Heard that morrowind was better.
I really loved the Dark Brotherhood in both games. Is there a DB in morrowind.

The closest thing to the DB in Morrowind is the Morag Tong, a legal assassins' guild. However, the DB do appear in one of Morrowind's expansions, Triburnal. If you have it, then occasionally DB assassins will try to kill you when you rest, which starts the expansion.

Actually there are DB members in Vvardenfall but they pretty much attack you, only like two members actually talk to you.

The Dark Bortherood started it's existence as a splinter branch of the Morag Tong. The Morag tong was (and is still) a mostly religious group who honors Mephala through murder. Not pointless, random murder but with murder as a too to achieve a goal. Mostly to settle political matters.

The Dark Brotherhood broke away from the Morag Tong when they started ignoring the religious side to focus mostly on the 'murder as a business' angle. The prevalence of the Morag Tong in Morrowind means the Dark Bortherhood as little presence there. Though that version comes from the Morrowind dunmer sources, the truth may be different.

Note that the Morag tong is legal per Morrowind laws. The various Houses constantly scheme for power and there's the unspoken agreement that intrigue and murder are the way to settle those disputes while keeping things from escalating into military confrontation. Since the Dark Bortherhood definitevely isn't legal, it definitively gives the Morag tong the edge on their homeground.

Apprently the treaty that included Morrowind into teh empire acknowledges the Morag Tong and turns a blind eye to their actions as long as they concern only the dunmer's internal politic and stay clear of the Empire's officials.

Actually in Oblivion is was hinted by the Black Horse Courier that the Morag Tong could be hired to do assassinations outside of Morrowind, but I think it would cost more to do so and with an added traveling fee.

You can join the Morag Tong but not the DB, though there is a mod that lets you join the DB

Joining the Morag Tong is pretty cool. If you get caught by a guard, you can show them a writ. A writ is a legal document telling the guard that the murder was sanctioned by the Morag Tong. Thus they'll let you go.

Edit: Also becareful you can break many quests doing their questline.

The Morag Tong is a very secretive group, and therefore very hard to find. If you manage to find their hideout, you're proven yourself worthy enough to join. Luckily, no extra travel since you're already there!
