Morrowind?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:23 pm

My first Elder Scrolls game was Oblivion, and of course I fell in love with it. However, I've heard a lot of people talking about Morrowind, and saying that Morrowind is still their favorite, even after playing Oblivion. I'm considering buying Morrowind, just to see, but I'm wondering what you all who have played both think about that. Would it be worth it?? Thanks, and sorry if this is in the wrong place!!

Well, we'd need to know what you liked about Oblivion the most first in order to give you a proper answer. Morrowind is quite a different game in numerous aspects.

in many ways it was better than oblivion with the exception of the combat system which i think oblivon did much better on.

there is a caveat though. make sure you install texture replacers and the mge addons like the water replacer and different shaders etc. makes the game very nice looking compared to vanilla morrowind which as much as i love the game just kills my eyes at this point. i mean my eyes actually start to tear up like i was just maced. they are that bad now.

edit: also grab the lighting mod. its the one graphical area where for some reason oblivon had worse lighting than morrowind.

I don't really see this important factor in buying Morrowind. OP, Morrowind is the BEST game out there, I really see no comparison to Oblivion. I would just get it.

What I am trying to say is, don't buy Morrowind b/c of Oblivion.

Buy Morrowind because it's the BEST game out there.

Need I say more about the BEST game out there: http://bethblog.com/index.php/2010/04/20/a-golden-birthday-for-morrowind/

I'd say it's totally worth it. Just read http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind_for_Oblivion_Players first.

it costs like 5$ GOTY, so even in the off chance that you don't like it you won't be spending much money. in other words, yes.

What alex said. Buy morrowind because it's THE BEST game ever.

Of course, that;s just our opinion, but if you like RPG's, Morrowind has to be up there.

Differences:

  • Morrowind has lower graphics - easily fixed with MGE, looks even better than Oblivion that way.
  • Morrowind is more diverse and unique - there's hardly anything cliché
  • Getting around is a challenge. You'll have to walk/ride/sail to places.
  • You'll feel the benefits of leveling up more. Nothing important (just wildlife and daedra I think) levels with you.
  • Combat system is more based on character skills, rather than your own. A lot of us like that. - If you complain about missing, you're an idiot. You won't miss too much if you use weapons you're skilled in (e.g., don't choose Long Sword as a major and then use an axe)
  • The game will be hard to start - Try finishing the main quest at level 1 now.
  • There's a lot of bugs - just download Morrowind Code Patch to fix 'em up
  • The landscape feels bigger, because it's not just one big straight walk to the other side.
  • Speechcraft and lockpicking are useful skills. There's no silly minigame you can complete at any level.
  • Things don't fly at you when you walk into a room - there's no crazy physics.
  • No AI :(.. At least NPC's don't kill eachother for stealing apples.
  • The game isn't happy, and you'll have Dunmer instead of Happy Fun Rainbow Elves.
  • The beast races are so much more awesome - they have better skeletons, and slavery makes them all the more awesome.
  • The beast races can't wear boots or full helmets - just search for a fix, it's only small.
  • The main story isn't Good vs Evil. there's morality issues.
  • Corruption! One of the best things ever, and I don't get why they removed it from Oblivion. High ranking guild members are corrupt. Some are cultists some are in it for the money, some are racist, and would rather Morrowind die than recieve help from an outlander
  • Things aren't overly epic. I don't feel like the world is going to end if I don't speak to Caius Cosades straight away. He actually tells me to go away and train up for a bit.
  • Reading is involved. Most of us love it. It leaves a lot to the imagination, and we don't get let down by rubbish voices.
  • Racism is heavily involved. Get used to people referring to you as "outlander"
  • People use better insults, imo. you'll be called an N'wah, or a Fetcher quite a lot.

I have some mods to suggest for your first playthrough. You don't want to much to distract you from the main game in the begining.
  • Morrowind Graphics Extender (if you can handle it)
  • Morrowind Code Patch
  • Better Bodies
  • Better Heads
  • Texture packs
  • Wakim's Game Improvements and a Brittlewind Fix for good balancing.
  • Morrowind Comes Alive
  • Children of Morrowind

There's tons more mods for you to download once you've done all three main quests, rose up in a bunch of guilds, cleared lots of ruins and caves, got all the artifacts you'll need, and done all the side quests you feel like doing.

EDIT:
Most importantly, NEVER start a thread asking for help to choose your class, or race, or help to kill more effectivly. The best part of Morrowind is by far being a complete noob and getting owned by Nix Hounds because you're lost and have no idea what you're doing. We all have our noob stories, and we all love 'em.

You should definitely buy morrowind, if you like playing diverse characters in Oblivion, you're gonna like morrowind.

It's sure worth it but you may get a "culture shock" when playing it, they are similar but in some points radically different.

Here's actually a guide: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind_for_Oblivion_Players
That could help you get started a bit :goodjob:

Just be careful. If you hate it, or think it blows Oblivion away, keep it to yourself when possible. The two games created a massive split between the fans who are always waiting in the shadows for the guards to look away so they can leap out and resume frantically stabbing each other.

i found it tends to be which ever game you play first you will prefer. Oblivion was my introduction to the elder scrolls, and it is my personal favourite. I might try morrowind again sometime though.

It's worth it. I love Morrowind and Daggerfall, but Oblivion remains my favorite because it is my first Elder Scrolls game. Morrowind's definitely a great game, though. If you liked Oblivion, you will probably like Morrowind.

That's a good point, I lost my elderscrollginity to Morrowind, so it will always probably be my personal favorite. Never played anything like before, and I haven't really played anything like it since. The atmosphere of the game is simply amazing. I will never forget some of the experiences I've have playing that game, it's one of the only games to truly take me to another world that was entirely believable. I still liked Oblivion, but I can't replay once a year like I do Morrowind. My favorite game of all time

i played Arena first...hence why i really enjoy the game, however morrowind still easily trumps Arena.

Morrowindi s my personal favorite....ive played ever quest in oblivion (though not all with the same character), ive still got an expansion to finish in morrowind.....my character always get sidetracked before they get to the expansion stuff.

As most here already said, Morrowind is very much worth the time and money you choose to invest in it. I still regard it as one of the best roleplaying games with one of the most immersive gameworlds ever created. Be prepared to pass a gameplay and visual hurdle though, Oblivion is much smoother on the eyes and more streamlined in its gameplay.

If I wanted to play Morrowind on PC with all the graphics patches how good of a computer would I need. Let's suppose I'd just buy a new computer, what would be a solid spec for playing Morrowind with the graphics turned-up to a decent level.

Anything recent with a decent graphics card suitable for gaming should be more than adequate. The game won't use multiple cores, so the base clock speed and performance of a single core is more important than having the most up-to-date quad core processor.

As for the initial question, I can't answer that without knowing what you liked about OB. MW is a much better RPG, OB is the better action game. Asking here is going to give you a VERY skewed opinion. Personally, I'm heavily in favor of MW over OB, but must admit that there were several improvements.

What do you mean OB as a better action game? Please define, I must be playing a different game. You said MW is a much better RPG, so is OB an RPG or action game?

Or both and OB can be considered a sport game since you can hunt, depending if you count hunting as a sport.

Trust me, when I play Oblivion it's an RPG 100% to me.

Oblivion is much more "player skill" centered than Morrowind, which is much more heavily "character skill" centered. If your character's weapon skill is low in MW, you miss a lot, but do full rated damage if/when you do managed to connect. If your character's weapon skill is low in OB, you hit anyway, but the damage is "nerfed". If your character's lockpick skill is low in MW, you fail a lot and gradually wear out your lockpick (about 20-25 uses per, whether you succeed or fail). In Oblivion, you can pick even the hardest locks if your reflexes as a player are good, regardless of the character's abilities.

Failure was removed from Oblivion: you NEVER fail at making a potion or enchantment, casting a spell, or repairing your equipment (although you may or may not lose the tool in the process). Failure is an integral part of Morrowind, and the game is VERY unforgiving for a starting character with low skills. The rewards come with risk, and I find the rewards of success to be far sweeter in MW when I've had to EARN them, rather than have them handed to me on a silver platter, as in OB.

Both games are hybrid RPG/Action adventures, but OB leans more toward the Action side and MW leans more to the RPG end of the spectrum. Whether you like one or the other more is entirely up to your own playing style and preferences; the things that some people find great about each game are the very things that others can't stand about them. I wouldn't even try to force one or the other upon you without knowing more about what you found enjoyable about the one you played.

Ok, Thats how you see it. To me, both are the same platform, 100% RPG. Matter of how people see it. I am going to agree with me but not disagree with you. I'm sure someone finds OB a sports game too, hunting.

Matt, I gotta know! What's your secret? Seriously! How can you play through Morrowind once a year??? I've been tinkering around with the game for several years on and off, and I have yet to do everything there is to do. I started on the Xbox, then migrated over to the PC once I figured out how fun the game can be. You must know something that I and many others don't. How do you do it?!?!?!?
