[WIPzRELz] Morrowind Text Adventure

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 1:24 am

First, a little background. It started out as a school project, then I decided to make it something I'm extremely interested in, so I decided to base it on Morrowind :tes:

Now, a progress update. Unfortunately I haven't managed to complete as much as I would have liked as I was waiting for permissions. Now that I have them, it should go along quite quickly. :) So far I have up to where one chooses the class one wishes to be. It will only be the three main archetypes: Mage, Rogue, and Warrior.

How're you creating this thing? I was thinking of something vaguely similar, but the sheer scale of such an idea is off-putting.

If you don't know already, http://www.intfiction.org/ and the people there will be able to help you with at least some of the technical workings, whatever you choose to create this with.

Sounds like a fun project.

I wrote a few very, very basic text adventures using GW Basic in the early nineties. They never got anywhere near completion, but it was still thrilling to see the result of all the time I put into these projects on the CRT monitor of my 8086 PC.

I'm using visual basic 2010 to create this. and I agree the scale is unnerving, but I am determined

Huge svcker for rpg text adventures...one based on Morrowind sounds great. Don't forget to include Fargoth!

'Course I won't forget Fargoth! Should all three archetypes be able to cast spells?

EDIT: Looking for beta testers!! Download here: http://www.4shared.com/file/ZbDgWiU_/Morrowind_Game.html

Ummmm... this doesn't really strike me as very interactive. It's more "Choose Your Own Adventure" than "text adventure". Is it just up to the Census and Excise office that you completed?

I note the game runs under Linux using Mono.

I agree about the "Choose your own adventure" vibe but I don't actually have a problem with that. However, it would be better let the player make more choices instead of them automatically happening (such as looking in the barrel).I think the font is unnecessarily large and be careful how the font reads on the backgrounds you have used. The one with the red font is difficult to read.

to what color do you think I should change the font on the red background? Also, should everyone get magic? Or just the mage?

EDIT: In addition, who would rather that the game is more of a text adventure (text input)? Who would rather keep it as is?

Not sure about the colors, as white text would probably be easier to read but might look weird at the same time. As for magic, I think if you go for the archetype approach, you might as well go all the way. If my mage failed at picking a beginner lock, I don't see why a rogue or a warrior would be able to cast even the simplest spell. :P And I really like the "choose your own adventure" style. As Pinkertonius said though, just try to avoid auto-decisions like the barrel. Contrary to the game, we don't need to look into the barrel to learn how to use magic, so you could provide it as an optional action. And that's it. Keep up the good work. :)

This could be cool, but I think it would need a LOT of work.

As it stands, I think the font is too hard to read, and doesn't contrast enough with the background.

Technical problem: When you reach the "end" and the windows is closed, the process remains open. I noticed that when I tried to move the exe to a subfolder of Morrowind and I had a message about the game still being opened. Checked my running processes and I had 6 Morrowind_Game left. The warrior path is probably the quickest way to reproduce this problem.

Okay, so I put a lighter brown for the text on the form with a red background, now I just have to figure out the process issue.
