Morrowind is WAY too dark!

Post » Mon Sep 05, 2011 8:27 am

So I recently reinstalled this game (vanilla, no mods), and I notice that the game is WAY too dark. Like, PITCH BLACK dark. I don't remember the game being this dark! I'm in Vassir-Dinadat cave (the one with lots of raw ebony) and I swear I could see NOTHING but black! It wasn't this bad before, I'm positive.

What's going on?

(Please don't tell me to move my gamma slider - as I've said, it didn't use to be this dark and I definitely didn't need to play with sliders, and also, the gamma slider makes the graphics look washed out)

I like it.

You can turn up the brightness a bit.

Or adjust your screen settings.

This has happened to me too, but (not to sound like a [censored]) I raised the gamma slider a tiny bit and it worked. Maybe it is your GPU, try messing with its settings

If you think the game looks too dark you have two options: 1). Change the gamma setting in your game. 2). Change the gamma setting of your computer. I'm sorry if those are not the answers you want to hear but they are the only answers any of us can give you.

If you want more in-depth help you should post in the proper forum: the Morrowind Hardware and Software forum.

Vassir-Didanat just happens to be rather dark, it's how that cave is. Go to a different cave and you'll likely find it's rather lighter than that.

(As for being darker than before, are you using a different video card or computer from the one you used last time you played the game? That could be the difference.)

Is there any way to increase the ambient lighting within the game? The gamma slider washes out the colours of the entire screen, and it also affects the UI graphics. I'm not looking to brighten up the screen, I'm looking for a way for the game's renderer to increase its lighting brightness.

I guess you got hit by the black screen bug. It happens when the fog distance of a cell is 0.00. There are many mods to fix this but I recommend to use http://code.google.com/p/mlox/wiki/Tes3cmd.

Open Morrowind.ini
Search for UseLinear, replace the 1 with 0
Search for UseQuadratic, replace 0 with 1

and change QuadraticRadiusMult how you want it to be. 3.0 is a nice value.

You will be able to do it through the morrowind ini. Search for "morrowind ini tweak" at google and it should pop up some results :)

Lol your avatar reminds me of that wicked morrowind race made some time ago :P

Racist.

hahahaha. jj

Use torches? If you go outside at nighttime and/or into caves irl you may notice that it gets dark, and objects do not naturally emit light.
