Morthal is a dump!

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:45 am

I was severely disappointed with both Dawnstar and Morthal. They are absurdly tiny!

See, I quite liked Morthal and Dawnstar. Like how Morthal has the raised walkways and Dawnstar opens up to the sea. I'm hoping DLC adds buildings to these two hold cities. Now, the town that I thought was dumpy is Winterhold. Pathetic. No, not ragging on Beth devs, just the whole vibe of the town. "oh, boo-hoo, the college, blah, blah, blah." Kudos to Beth for creating this vibe, actually.

I'd actually live in Dawstar though. Not sure if it's the location, the quests there or the people, but Morthal is horrible. Almost as bad as Markarth.

Markarth is basically just an open-air Orzammar. I didn't like the latter much either.

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of Skyrim.

:hehe:

 I'm so glad someone posted that!

Hang on, hang on, whats all this shouting? Well have no trouble here. This is a local shop, for local people.

I'm sure I heard someone in the background actually say that.

Makes me think if Skyrim has such little towns how can the Stormcloaks have so many soldiers.. There are what how many houses per each city? A few small inn like towns which as just as big as the cruddy Dawnstar and Morthal.. The Jarls besides Solitude/Whiterun live in crappy shacks.

A Jarl would not have a wooden home which could easily be burn down with a single well placed flaming arrow. But it's whatever, they were rushed to put out the game (just a statement) so they had to cut on parts of the game. I feel cities were one thing they had to skimp o and that makes me sad.

Agreed.

I dig the swampy town feel.

and the one time I went to Riften it kind of reminded me of Bruma - so cold, so snowy, so wretched.

Pfft. It's the only place where you can play tag with the kids :hehe:

Svari, Kayd, and the other girl in Solitude all play tag. The girl in Markarth plays hide and seek AND tag.

She challenged my master thief to a game of hide and seek. Five days later, my character starved to death after hiding for too long.

Yeah the cities outside of the big four are very forgettable. I remember the cities in Skyrim being hyped up a lot, but the only thing better about the cities in Skyrim is how great Whiterun looks on the outside.

Big 5 - Solitude, Markarth, Windhelm, Whiterun and Riften

I like Morhtal for it's layout and the cool people. It's the home of my current companion, Benor, Who's great.
The only disappointing city for me is Winterhold, since there is nothing left. It's the size of Ivarstead. The college there is great though

Incorrect. I could play tag + Hide-n-Seek with the children in Riverwood as well.

Funny but also incredibly homosixual.

It's still a bit odd that there are fewer cities than in Oblivion (argh, I'm sounding like a Morrowindista again), none of which are on a larger scale, and no equivalent of the Imperial City; and people said that was too small...

Yeah, it's a shame. Personally. I think they could have done much more with Solitude - it has an absolute tonne of unused space that I'm sure modders will utilize effectively (I'm thinking specifically the path from the stalls toward the Blue Palace; that area is perfect for 2 or 3 rows of buildings, with narrow alleyways). Solitude's also got multiple manhole covers that could have been used for some interesting sewer sections that could lead directly out the cliff. Alas, we only have Riften's ratways, which are linear compared to the IC's sewers. Riften could also have been enlarged and made into a great town; it seems small as it is. The only city I'm fully satisfied with is Whiterun, and you can argue that's the one most resources went into because it was the demo town.

I think cities are one of Skyrim's weaknesses.

I kinda disagree. Yes they are smaller, but that is to be expected from a rougher, more sparsely populated land. And they look much more diverse than Oblivions cities.

And yet somehow they have plenty of guards per city and a large number of stormcloaks. Also quite a few Nords from Skyrim sided with the Empire.

I simply do not see how unless the fact that the homes/people per city are pretty much cut down due to almost every healthy man/woman being on a side during the war.

Maybe I just miss the fact a lot of people must live in the hills and decided to join a side instead of become forsworn : B

Edit:

I just do not see the support unless Skyrim is still at the point where you have a cousin in every city and family members live together upto 5 + people per house.

The latter certainly wasn't uncommon in times past; in fact many times that number. I think my main gripe is that the cities are a bit small and dull; though I've recently been spoiled by Bananasplit's Better Cities during my last play-through of Oblivion: Bethesda incorporated a lot of modders' ideas, but sadly seemed to miss this one.

I think I stole the idea from Pratchett; either him or the League of Gentlemen... hmm, now that I think about it, Morthal is kind of Skyrim's answer to Royston Vasey.

Hey! I live in the town that Royston Vasey was based on!

Might explain why I like Morthal. I like the cut of the Jarl's jib.

well, the nords are honorable people. choosing a side probably honors most men and women than becoming somthing the people of skyrim dont want or like
