Most difficult in Skyrim: Putting a cup on a table

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 5:53 am

If the items didn't move themselves after leaving the house, I'd be cool leaving the default setup in place. Once my first house decorations were purchased, I thought "this looks nice, I'll just leave it as-is." After a few hours of gameplay, every time I came back to the house some random item had been flung across the room. Poltergeist?

And yes, that friggin' lightening bug in a jar. Will. Not. Sit. Up. Straight. I too have decided it looks best haphazardly flung under my bed..

I did this with the "Bee in a Jar" item... I was so determined to give my pet Bee a pretty spot on my table for all to see.. only to have it kicking around the floor by the end of this adventure.

Meh... I miss the daya of making stuff float all over my room in morrowind by stacking them up and taking the stuff from the bottom.

My mage was awesome with his room full of floating books.

I believe this is called "complexity" and why Morrowind is superior to any other game in the universe.

This has to be the most annoying thing ive seen in Oblivion and Skyrim. I though placeing items in Morrowind was tedious but now i want it back. I had the most awesome setup house in Morrowind. But i cant even get a stupid GhostBlade to stop finding its way under my bed in Skyrim. Or i cant stack gold ingots on top of eachother without knocking them all ever. Who doesnt want a stack of gold in the freakin house?!?!

Really funny you mention that, but I've always wanted a stack of gold bars in my house and I was thrilled they were gonna actually be an item in Skyrim. I just tried doing it last night, making a nice stack, and it was an exercise in absolute futility. I could, after much trouble, make the first layer pretty decently...but trying to stack even one bar on top of the others resulted in a complete mess. There doesn't seem to be any item-to-item friction coded into the physics, because these things slide all over each other like wet fish. Same thing goes placing food items on plates; against all logic they just slide right off, even when the surface is completely flat

The accuracy of item manipulation within the game world is significantly decreased from Oblivion. Doesn't matter if you hover the cursor over the top of a butterfly in a jar or the bottom, it will grab it the same.

Yea I gave up on that. My home just looks worse than my apartment now -- crap all over the floor and sweet rolls lying on my bed.

Yeah, there's no point in decorating. I tried, and you cant even walk around anymore. I think its the same glitch as the dragons, where their bones start moving everywhere

well manipulating in the world of skyrim means, Rubbing what ever item you are grabbing to whatever surface you can fin until you get it in the right position

you can imagine how it is to try and position a book to get it the right way up ...

For the gods sake, how I hated this thing.
Find this [censored] blue butterfly and tried to put it in a table in my house.
After at least half hour, managed to turn it into right position (using the table to turn it). when near the place I wanted, it touched a cup and things started to fall from the table, and the blood came out of my brain as I saw the destruction took place.
I tried to put things in place again, but almost broke fingers pressing the mouse tho find things on ground every time.
To this day, the blue butterfly is around the house somewhere.

I spent 2 hours decorating my home, trying to learn this new, crappy grabbing system. All my attempts were made futile when I decided to hold one item, tried pressing buttons to see if I could hopefully rotate the item, then staring blankly at my TV for 10 solid minutes when I heard "FUS!!!" and all my crap flew everywhere. It's funny now, but I was pissed after I grasped the reality of my situation.

You just made all my co-workers look at me weird because of that burst of laughter I had reading that. Dirtbag. Lol

I know some people won't like this, but I think it's a good idea.

A Halo: Reach forge-mode option thingy that you can only use inside houses you own (free or bought). It would pause the game if that would be a problem. Also, it would be nice to have some sort of icon next to containers that do NOT respawn their contents. I lost my Fin-Gleam in Oblivion that way. Even when someone says "Oh X container in Y room in the Z corner is a non-respawning container, I am always a little edgy...

Nothing freaks me out more than the moving mannequins at my Honeyside house. They don't just reposition themselves, they actually come off their bases as if they walked.

Really? That sound cool! Maybe the could make some sort of enchanted mannequins that you can equip with stuff and use as (a) training partner(s)... Don't say make a mod for it. I'd liek my previous two suggestions to be something official so console players don't get ripped-off. If they make it of course....

Mannequins are really just reskinned NPCs. Now, they are supposed to have no animations or movement. I think this is more a cell render issue than a mannequin moving on it's own.

I've been collecting those dragon claw key things (ebony, sapphire, gold, coral, etc.*), and wanted to place them all in a nice line on top of a bookshelf in my home. Took like an hour to get two of them somewhat close to what I wanted. I was getting so frustrated with the other two, I just decided to go do something else and try again with the other two later. So I go out and do some quests and explore a cave, and decide to try the other two before bed. I go inside my home and the other two I had so carefully taken forever to put on the shelf were in the floor. That was two days ago and they're still on the floor because [censored] them.

I know it's an issue and not part of the gameplay, but it's still freaky seeing them misplaced in your basemant.

I found this thread where someone posted pictures of a similar problem:

Mine haven't decided to float in the air yet :)

Collision detection and physics were better in Oblivion. A game that came out LAST DECADE. Sigh.

I came home to find everything that I placed carefully on the shelves and tables in my house scattered all over the floor. :cryvaultboy:

And worst of all some random Whiterun citizen was just standing in the middle of my kitchen and wouldn't leave. :swear:

Yeah, the grab button and total lack of physics is a real step backwards compared to previous grab functions in ES games. Not to mention the floor scatter bug.

Maybe items being scattered around and misplaced can be part of the lore. I like to think that while I'm out getting in touch with nature there was a small earthquake or a dragon paid a visit to town and shook up some houses.

I tried.
