Most difficult in Skyrim: Putting a cup on a table

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:30 pm

Hard to believe that my character can take down an angry Fire Dragon, but it takes me an hour to place a cup on a shelf. Or a bowl on a table, or a jar on a dresser, etc. You'd think Bethesda would have made this easier since Oblivion, but no.

And even more annoying is after you place an apple in a bowl on a table and leave your house, when you come back in, everything is all over the floor!

Hey modders: It would be awesome to make each table, shelf, or other furniture have "slots" where items can be placed and LOCK into position.

This annoy anyone else?

Sign me up. I haven't been able to decorate properly since morrowind.

But it felt easier in fallout 3 for some reason.

Meh... I miss the daya of making stuff float all over my room in morrowind by stacking them up and taking the stuff from the bottom.

My mage was awesome with his room full of floating books.

I had this problem too. I like the weapon mounting thing... and the bookshelf. Seems like an easy fix to allow all furniture AND walls hold your stuff. Fun mod.

When I try to place stuff its just knocks other cups off the table, it is an exercise in futility but ultimately that's what I love about TES the spectacular beauty and superb game play mixed with frustrating menial tasks such as decorating your house.

Has anyone hit "take all" from their cupboard, cursed and systematically organized your items again?

I gave up after a few minutes. If they'd add an option to rotate it around while holding on to it, problem would be solved (to some degree).

I think there was a mod for Oblivion in the form of a decoration ring, that when equipped would make it less annoying to place things about your home.

I'll wager that a similar mod will be made for Skyrim.

Yeah, its almost like Bethesda went half way, but then said "fark it." You've to the integrated bookshelves and weapon racks, and even the wall-mounted weapon rack, but nothing else. Would be too excellent if they worked like Legos. You see a spot, you can "click" in an item from your inventory and it would stay in place.

Yep. I've spent countless minutes picking up brooms in my Windhelm home that JUST KEEP FALLING DOWN. :banghead:

I loved doing it in Oblivion. Took me ages to get things just right but afterwards I felt really good about it.

But pre-decorated houses in Skyrim look pretty neat so far so I haven't bothered. Plus there are no paintbrushes so I can't mount my weapons on the wall. ;)

This has to be the most annoying thing ive seen in Oblivion and Skyrim. I though placeing items in Morrowind was tedious but now i want it back. I had the most awesome setup house in Morrowind. But i cant even get a stupid GhostBlade to stop finding its way under my bed in Skyrim. Or i cant stack gold ingots on top of eachother without knocking them all ever. Who doesnt want a stack of gold in the freakin house?!?!

All I did was put two helmets on an end table.... came back a few days later, one was on the floor, the other rolled down the stairs.... some wonky physics going on in my house.....

I found a Butterfly in a Jar and I've been trying to stand that son of a [censored] up in my [censored] Breezehome bedroom ever since. It just won't stand.

So I gave up on it and let it fall over... somewhere.

I think they toned down the Physics with interior cells in a patch. Like you, I have given up decorating my houses since the days of Morrowind.

There are some mods that came out for the other games that helps with these issues, perhaps this game will have one too.

I don't know about the other mediums, but on Xbox it's especially vexatious. It doesn't matter where you grab an item (you know, to have the weight of the item more to one side or whatever, so it settles in the manner you want it to,) you will ALWAYS default to picking-up the item in the middle. Always.

Also makes giving NPCs an extremely concave sombrero (basket) unnecessarily tedious. :swear: "Pick it up from the bottom! [censored] it!" And I wasn't even doing it to steal anything, I just wanted to show my little brother it to make him laugh.

I just wish things would stay upright...all those damn pots in the inns that people keep knocking around never want to sit upright.

I did manage to put a statue of dibella nicely on the end dresser of my bed in Honeyside to show all the ladies whats up. Bow chicka bow wow.

My buddy put around thirty or so different articles of jewelry into a display case in his house. I mean the damned thing was packed. When he came back one day and re-entered the home he heard a million crashes and found that the case was open and his jewelry was all over the place. Behind furniture he couldn't get to.

Hey I thought it was funny.

Yeah, half an hour into placing that cup on the table I usually wipe the sweat from my brow, stretch my fingers and go get a beer before I return for the next half hour: Flipping the cup over so it faces up!

There was a mod in Oblivion that let you cast a spell that allowed you to rotate items and lock them into place. I got way to used to that. Now whenever I look at an empty wall I think "I should mount a shield there... Oh wait. Guess I'll haphazardly lean it against this shelf upside-down because there's no way I'm getting that thing right-side-up." Wouldn't matter if there was a mod now, considering I'm on the 360.

Why is it that whenever you drop something, it's always, always facing the opposite direction of what you actually want? Then you have to drag it all over the wall (knocking down everything else) to flip it.

I spent 2 hours decorating my home, trying to learn this new, crappy grabbing system. All my attempts were made futile when I decided to hold one item, tried pressing buttons to see if I could hopefully rotate the item, then staring blankly at my TV for 10 solid minutes when I heard "FUS!!!" and all my crap flew everywhere. It's funny now, but I was pissed after I grasped the reality of my situation.

Definitely. Skyrim has the least intuitive "pick things up and move them" system yet. Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas were all touch-and-go in that area, but Skyrim totally dropped the ball. Each item has a default position that it "wants" to be in, and it doesn't always makes sense. Good luck setting the Masque of Clavicus Vile right-side up on a shelf - it wants to be set down sideways, and no amount of poking or prodding (i.e. rubbing it against the sides of other objects to make it shift position) will work. While these system svcked in past Beth games, you were at least able to change how an object moved around by picking it up by a specific "point" and letting the objects center of gravity do the rest. In Skyrim, objects do not have a center of gravity, but a "default" position in space that they will strive to fill, no matter what.

And yeah, if by some fluke of physics you manage to get an object standing the way you want it, it'll be on the floor when you return. This is why I watch what I place in my home - more often than not, I just let it lie.

Hahahha I just cant help laugh at your stories despite my similar problems. After just buying the breezehome and coming in the first time to a rabbit leg randomly on the floor i figured it would be hard to decorate my house as i used to in MD. So I think that the only things I'll try and set up at my awesome objects like statues, butterflies, etc. and a bowl that i want to fill with different gems. However... i feel like the bowl will end up everywhere and my gems lost if i ever tried.

Two posts up... when you shouted at your objects... I burst out laughing!

I didn't find it quite so hard in Oblivion. I thought I was quite good at it, but I haven't been able to place [censored] in Breezehome. I just gave up. Everything goes in a chest or on the floor. My Nord is just not as tidy as my Dunmer in Oblivion.

If your gonna put the time into setting up your homes....you better damn well make sure you don't accidentally let the 'Unrelenting Force' shout off in your homes.

I would feel so bad if this happened to someone after they spent 2+ hours decorating...nah...I'd just roll over laughing
