Obviously a Dragonborn can be any race, but I think as far as going against Alduin and all, and given Alduin's natural enemy is Shor/Lorkhan, and given that Shor is the hero of men, then there you go.
Bethesda thinks it's a Nord, so i'll go with that. Can you really picture swapping out the Nord Dovahkiin in the trailer with a Bosmer? That Dragon shout might seem a bit strange.
*Adoring Fan Voice* "By Azura, by Azura, by Azura!"
Must it be a Nord simply because the trailer shows a Nord? I often played as a human race in Morrowind because it felt like there was more impact in gaining the respect of the Ashlander tribes and the Dunmer houses. I think playing a Dunmer in Skyrim (i hate Altmers and Bosmers) is a better choice than a Nord or Imperial. 75% Resist Fire is very useful too...
You called them mer (elves) but they are not.
I was being facetious. Good grief do I have to make that plain, really?? It's a reference to their wacky behavior to desperately pretend that they're one of the Altmer. Duh.

A little lead-up would have been nice, though. You kind of just sprang it on us. But, it is quite the LOL moment for me now. I could totally see a snooty cape-wearing gorilla fighting a dragon.

That's just how I roll. Also, I'm sooo gonna roleplay one should there's finally a mod released for that race, I assure you! His nickname will be "Batmer" :batman: .
