Most Humane option for dying kitten?

Post » Tue Apr 14, 2015 6:32 pm

Alright so one of my cats had kittens a couple weeks ago, this is the fourth litter of kittens I've been through so im not green at this by any means, but I'm unsure what to do right now given my options.

One of the five of the kittens in just this last week has been barely moving, he was walking around and fine about a week ago and seemed all good, but just in the last 3 or 4 days, he's been barely walking, still meows, but all of the other kittens are running around and jumping and all that, and this guy doesnt walk any further than a few inches. When he is standing, he's all shaking like crazy, and when i put him next to the mother while shes feeding them, he doesnt even make an attempt to try and feed off her.

In the last 48 hours, the cat has moved in total maybe two feet, if that.

So the last two days the kitten hasnt eaten and seemingly cant even walk anymore (it looks like he cant even stand on his back legs anymore, they just drag behind him, IF he even moves). I've come to the conclusion that he isn't going to make it out of this batch of kittens.

So what I'm asking is, what's my most humane option? I've got too many cats as it is and gotta get rid of as many as possible (as in give away), so I dont have the money or the time to take this single kitten to the vet or anything like that (i also spent 500 bucks this month fixing my other cats). So trying to save this cat isnt even an option at this point as far as I see it.

Do i just leave the cat to nature to die off from starvation or whatever it is that's killing it?

Do I grab a plastic bag and snap its neck myself?

Is there a better way to euthanize the cat at home?

What option do you guys think is the best? The most humane option i can really think of is snapping the cat's neck myself, but that's not a prospect i look forward to (I'll do it if i have to, but i would rather not). I guess what I'm looking for is an easier way to kill it, if there even is one.

So guys, give me some options, or just convince me to do it myself. I'll decide either later on tonight or tomorrow what im going to do.

Three choices:

Kill it yourself as quickly as you can.

Have someone kill it.

Find out what is wrong with the kitten and possibly save it.

I am an animal lover, but honestly, those options are too cruel. I would take him to the vet.

I would suggest taking it to the nearest vet or humane society if possible.

They'll be able to decide if they can do anything for the kitten, and if not, they'll be able to put it down in a humane way.

As i said, i already paid more than 500 dollars this month getting cats fixed. On my acreage i have a total of 18 cats right now (i had 6 like a month ago, but the three girls all got pregnant around the same time). They're all fixed except this last female cat that im not letting outside til i get it fixed, and i got a couple weeks before i can get her fixed, and my life is busy enough with work (and a trip in a couple weeks) that i dont have the time to take this cat to the vet in the meantime.

This time a year ago i had 0 cats (took in two strays, who happened to be pregnant, got them fixed afterwards and raised their kittens as my own, as well as gave a few away), and now i got 18. I think my Karma metre is still ahead that i can afford to euthanize 1 single kitten and still be ahead.

Even if i did take the cat to the vet and did whatever it took to get it stabilized, it will most likely have life long problems as a perpetual sick cat, and i have enough cats to look after as it is that i cant afford to raise a sick/dying cat, not to mention i probably will have a very hard time giving the cat away as well.

We had a kitten like this as well. Ours had worms, I think it was. It's likely the mother gave it to it, I believe.

Yours might need some simple worm medicine, and of course food. It would die from dehydration or starvation before the worms kill it!

That's actually a good answer. I can probably just go to the humane society and say that the cat is dying, and leave it up to them to do with him whatever they want and wipe my hands clean of the ordeal.

Though the kitten isnt old enough to be weaned of it's mother yet, so i think that's gonna cause some problems.

Whatever is wrong with him, he isn't going to get better if he's starving. Have you tried feeding him manually?

Yeah, well they're still too young to eat solid food and are feeding off mom. But yeah, ive tried to give it some wet kitten food and it doesnt even try to eat it (as i said, it wont even try to feed off its mom when its like 2 inches away). And the mom doesnt seem too concerned about it at all.

Take it to a vet and also arrange to get the females neutered. If you're going to keep pets at least try and be responsible about it.

Lol. They're all neudered except the one that just had the babies. I was about to get them all spayed, they were only 4 months old and got pregnant from the male tabbies that hang around, i didnt even think they could get pregnant at that time (and didnt see any signs of going into heat), and when i called them up to book an appointment they asked me if they were pregnant, so i went and checked and realized all 3 of them were just pregnant.

But as i said, taking to a vet isnt an option for me. Humane society, sure, but vet, nope.

All the vets around here require appointments, the soonest id get one is this friday if im lucky, the cat would be dead by then anyway.

I don't want to judgemental about it, but if a vet visit isn't possible like you say, then I agree with the others about taking the little guy to a Humane Society.

Hope it all works out for you.

Vets in Canada don't offer sacrifices for dying pets? Here in Brazil if you have a dying pet or with a disease that makes them suffer too much, you take them to the vets and they inject a poison. They die quite quick. Had to sacrifice a dog once (grandma's dog), he died after a few minutes and he slept before. He was 17 years old, at the time he was older than me!

Edit: Oh, sorry. After reading the post I saw the Humane Society thing. Lesson learned: never read only the OP's post.

They do, but it requires an appointment and the earliest i can get into a vet is by friday, by then the cat is gonna be dead anyway. The humane society will probably just take him though, im looking into that.

Take it to the humane society. They have milk replacer for kittens, and can feed it if they can save it.
