The last war were the opposition was not so much thought of as "The Enemy" but more as "The Opponent". Both sides playing a game of life or death, doing whatever must be done to survive.

The American Civil War was not the last of these. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_truce anyone?

WWI - don't claim to be a history buff at all, but I like the poetry. I know all warfare must be awful, but the trenches sounded like a particularly harsh brand of hell.

War, ancient or recent is always hell and reflects the tendency of mankind to destroy itself.
In terms of era, I′d have to say post-ww2/cold war, a time of paranoia, the quest for space, lies and fear, when there was actually a possibility of the destruction of the entire planet. :shakehead:
In terms of weaponry and warfare, I believe it was the appearance of the second most dangerous weapon of all (right after the human mind), the radar.

My hubs votes for WW2. He always says it shaped the politics of today.

I vote for the conquest of the Americas, and WW1.
The COA brought new wealth, power, and opportunity to those European rulers, merchants, and entreprenuers. This directly affected the politcal climate in Europe. Where face it, the known world was ruled.
The Mayan empire was defunct by the time Cortez landed, what remanants of the culture were left, the Aztec ruled or took tribute from.
World War One I think was also important, it made use of the handheld machine gun, which revolutionized how we fought wars.

I find the post ww2 wars most interesting though our current war is interesting as well. Having most people unite (or try too) in order to defeat a faceless enemy who doesnt fight for a flag, resource, or country and solely based on ideology is interesting.

I hate the current war, how can you beat people who just hide in mountains ?If they fought head on fine, but this way its just an endless game of hide and seek only with IEDs everywhere.
You cnat do much to win, so it just comes of as one sided and annoys me.

The Current Era is by far the least 'chivalrous' with civilians becoming the main target not soldiers

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHKAYYYYYYYYYYY............
SOMEONE knows nothing about modern warfare (not the game, lol). Why would a government kill civilians? They eliminate insurgencies, and basically throw up everytime they cause a kid to get a splinter. It's actually the opposite. Warefare <1900 was all about killing everything in your path. It's called total war. Burn crops, villages, towns, houses, livestock, people, then when all's said and done, kill the kids and [censored] their moms. That doesn't happen anymore. You must be thinking ancient war was just knights in shiny armour, when in fact, it wasn't. War was much more brutal, and more common. An average 12 year old from 1300 probably has seen at least 1 person beheaded.

I bet if you were fighting that war, and the only way to surrive was hiding in the mountians I don't thing you would be saying it annoys you. If anything it shows how the people are resliant and can't be defeated.
You use with what you have. Why should they fight head on? Why? You use with what you have. You have the mountians while the other side is using military superiority. They have the Satelites, they have
the militatray technology.

You telling me, if you have a knife and your opponents have maching guns, you are not going to hide? That you will go out and meet them head on?

Even though I love ancient history, in terms of warfare there is nothing more interesting than WWII. There are so many aspects of the war that can be claimed as critical, so many new technologies, perfections of old technologies, higher stakes, etc.

They are classed as Ancient, I don't know much about ancient Chinese warfare

The reason Current era warfare is so much worse than previous wars is that civilians are targeted bby terrorists, because as te terroists don''t have te numbers to take America head on, they are trying to make them 'surrender', by harrassing civilians, I was referrong to Terror warfare, not the current head-on warfare.

Would you mind specifying when war became as humane as you seem to think? I'm not sure I'm following.

And on topic, medieval times, but it's not the only period I enjoy.

Oh we could defeat them easily. But we dont try to hurt innocents, they do.
If we just said "[censored] it aslong as they die" then the middle east could be turned to glass, but we would rather not kill everyone for the ones hiding in the mountains setting traps.

Ancient war times,

People just starting to understand organized massive warfare and starting to try tactics for the first time. And how it kind of set the stage for everything else, in a way.
