Most Overrated Band(s)/Music Artist(s) of All Time

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:37 pm

Most music from the past few years has svcked. The downfall of music began with Nirvana and the grunge movement.

At least it's had the positive effect of making country so popular recently.

Which part? The overrated part or the fact that he used to like him?

So the Beatles and the music "revolution" ruined music, but you like Clutch. Clutch use distorted guitars, take one wild stab in the dark as to who introduced distortion. I understand you not liking them, but saying they're overrated without fully recognising what they did for music doesn't work for me. This isn't really limited to whether you enjoy their music.

Also, this:
None. I can get into arguments about this over games all day, but as far as music is concerned, I consider it entirely subjective to the point where it can't even be properly disputed over and I see no reason to think any music is overrated or underrated. "Different strokes for different folks" and all that jazz.

And no, it's not just me taking up a neutral position - I seriously feel this way because I listen to such an amazingly wide array of music, much of which is considered "bad" by many people.

Wait, what?

I meant that REM are so bad, because people still listen to them are over-rated

I'm surprised no one mentioned Linkin Park though...personally I like them, again, especially their old albums but I've seen them being considered extremely overrated.

I must've forgot, they aren't the worst ban in existence, but a lot of people view them as gods.

.. funny to see mention of Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Hendrix, etc as "over rated".
They not only define they eras and their influence in music is still present, their cultural impact transcended music and transcended generations as well. No one has to like their music because of it, but to say they are "over rated", no.

I think it can. They might've defined eras, but that doesn't mean they aren't over rated. They have spawned bands which are occasionally better than them, chances are, someone can do Hendrix better than Hendrix.

The Beatles really do take the cake on the overrated scale. I've never heard such unexciting music in my life. I wish they'd stuck with being an alternative punk band that ate fried chicken on stage and set fire to condems. Then they might have been something interesting.

AC/DC
Linkin Park
Jack Johnson
Green Day
Lady CaCa
Justin Bieber
Pretty much every female pop star out there today

EDIT: I love Metallica. And so many people these days think they're overrated that they actually qualify as underrated.

It's pretty obvious that most of the people calling Metallica overrated have probably only listened to songs like Enter Sandman or St Anger.

80s Metallica and 90s/2000s Metallica might as well be two completely different bands, that's how much their newer stuff svcks. Noone should judge them on the past two decades.

While it is true that I haven't heard much of their stuff, I still think they're way too hyped for what they are. I like Enter Sandman, but that's about it

I've listened to Metallica since I was 9. I'm 6 months shy of 30. So, yeah, I don't fall into your ill-formed notion. I liked them when I was younger, hated them when I got older, enjoy their older music now, but I still think they are damn overrated. Worst part is, the whole Napster thing got them even more attention, even if it was negative, it still attracted people towards them, and some of those people listened to their music to see what it was all about, which realistically was probably their plan all along. People love a ruckus, and will pay attention to one no matter the reason.

Elvis Presley (not saying he's bad, but not as good as people seem to think he was.)

Metallica. I can't talk music at school, because the people who like the metal/hardcoe genre all love Metallica and everyone hated on me when I said they svcked.

Escape the Fate - I don't mind them, but they're just hailed as the best thing that ever happened to Post-hardcoe

But, then again, it's personal taste.

Metallica was great back then but now, for me they just don't sound right. i wish they still had Cliff Burton. :(

Beatles are awesome to me whether overated or whatever. Its all opinion.

Escape the Fate: My sister listens to that. I tihnk I liked one of their guiar solos and that was it. Can't stand all that shrieking and whining.

Pink Floyd

Let me guess, your dad listens to them so to be unique you dislike them? Thats some individualism right there!

The Beatles aren't really overrated, they are good musicians but it appears that they have been caught up in some sort of fad.

though i dont understand the intense hate for Justin Bieber, he is not good by any means, but he is no worse then most pop singers.

I was also thinking "most overrated hate" is an interesting point. Another one is that "Friday" song by whatever her name is, the one that provoked such ire; when I eventually heard it I was left wondering what was the big deal. Yeah, it was inane and not very good... like a substantial amount of the pop music to be found in the charts at any given time since about, well, ever really. But prior to hearing it I'd got the impression it had somehow redefined terrible music, which it just didn't, at all.

I suppose I'm left feeling as puzzled about the bands and singers that people love to hate as I am about the seemingly inexplicable success of REM etc. That said, I have an enduring hatred of much of what my sister used to listen to, since being forced to hear such drivel on a regular basis gives you a very special appreciation of it...

Overall I have to agree. They portray that really ignorant beer-swilling working class appearance, but it's all really phony anyways.

Still though, angus young has an awesome guitar tone.
