Most Overrated Band(s)/Music Artist(s) of All Time

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:32 am

Metallica. I can't talk music at school, because the people who like the metal/hardcoe genre all love Metallica and everyone hated on me when I said they svcked.
Dubstep
Escape the Fate - I don't mind them, but they're just hailed as the best thing that ever happened to Post-hardcoe
Most of the Pop coming out of the US and UK, they all sound the same
Eminem, along with all of the other Hip-Hop artists. But especially Eminem.

But, then again, it's personal taste.

Why does everybody say the Beatles? :'(

I don't know what it's like in the rest of the world, but here everybody thinks they svck majorly, although most people have only ever heard a handful of their songs when they sang over 220, making them under-rated IMO.

They were good, Blackbird and let it be were nice songs, but NO BAND is good enough to not seem overrated with the fanbase the Beatles had

Gee, I always liked the Beatles but never really liked the Rolling Stones. Some old songs are OK, but I never really liked the band....
That being said, they have really stuck it out and rolled with the changes, and developed new fans during every era.
I could count maybe 6 or 7 songs I really like....the rest....meh.

Well yeah, people were fanatical about them, so I guess they were kinda over-rated, but that doesn't mean they're bad.

Metallica. As a thrash metal band and as a band in general. They're an embarassing example of both.

Does anyone rate R.E.M.? Every time I hear their name I have to remind myself that they exist. I thought they were one of those bands like Status Quo that no one actually listens to (except peoples' dads) but by some sort of black magic have managed to sell a few records anyway...

The fact that people still listen to them shows that they are overrated.

Well, surprisingly I figured posting Metallica would get me blasted but just scanning the first several posts have shown me others believe the same. I like a fair amount of their older songs, but anything in the last Decade of theirs is crap. AC/DC is crap, entirely, none of their stuff is any good and I don't understand how ANYONE likes them. The Beatles as well. Their music may have been popular during that Era, but it sounds pretty lousy to my ears.

Pop, rap, techno...

Moving into area's of music that I actually like, Nirvana (I love grunge but Nirvana get far to much attention), Coldplay (like Radiohead but boring), AC-DC, Blink 182 and the next wave of pop punk it ushered in, Slipknot and any of those other screamy bands.

Suggesting the Beetle's are overrated is a fairly appalling example of a lack of familiarity with rock in general; I have no love for there music itself but they've influenced such a wide range of other artists that to suggest that they get to much attention is simply untrue. R.E.M...well, do they really get to much attention these days anyway? Metallica, well, I like their music up until Load, but I suppose that just comes down to opinion, likewise, I have a reasonable amount of respect for Green Day, or at least for the lyrical themes of American Idiot...not that I listen to them very much these days.

Note to self: stop visiting this forum

I don't mind Radiohead but I don't think they're as clever or deep as people make them out to be.

I can't stand metal, but I don't think it's overrated. To me it's just noise, but I know people think that about House and Dubstep and any other music I like.

I think Tenacious D is like Monty Python, I don't mind them in and of themselves, but their fans are really irritating.

Given that this is all opinions anyway, bringing truth and falsehood into it is pretty silly. I think the Beatles are overrated because I'm tired of people banging on about them - regardless or not of the fact that they've influenced lots of other artists (both good and bad), which in no way refutes my opinion...

Because god knows we shouldn't let truth and lies influence our opinions. We should just form them from any half-assed rumors we hear on a Saturday night at the pub.

My vote goes to R.E.M.

I was going to mention them too: REM, U2, Radiohead; the usual culprits who seem to appear on the cover of Q magazine every other issue, year in, year out.

Usually when it comes to established bands that I don't care for, I take the attitude "not my cup of tea but I can appreciate why people like them". In the case of the above, however, I'm mystified: I really don't get their popularity beyond being "trendy", but that doesn't quite seem to explain their longevity or their high profile.
