Most Overrated Band(s)/Music Artist(s) of All Time

Lady Gaga

I cannot *bleeping* understand why this THING is so popular. Her music makes me want to claw my hears out then pour acid into them to make sure I can no longer hear the trash spewing forth from the radio. There's quite a bit I can tolerate, but that lady gaga crap is just ridiculous.

Well based off how they play their instruments, I don't think any band is overrated. Metallica might have toned down a lot from their old days, but their music is still pretty skillful. Keep in mind that I think anything that someone else can do instrument wise that I can't do, is skillful. For me the Beatles were completely bland musically but my opinion doesn't make them overrated. But I am sure there is some artist out there who didn't deserve the fame they got, course that's mostly subjective so I don't think it counts entirely.

Pretty much all popular music is overrated. People generally don't have taste when it comes to music...

But i'll go with these three:

The Beatles (glorified boyband, poor music)
Pink Floyd (hideously overrated)
Radiohead (mediocre yet ridiculously popular)

I don't understand that way of thinking. Just because people like it means it svcks? Only things that are completely obscure are worthy of being called good? I don't understand.

I didn't say that. All I said was in general, most people tend to have fairly poor taste when it comes to music. That's not to say all popular music is bad.

Just because something is overrated doesn't mean to say that it svcks. A lot of popular music is very mediocre, but some of it is good. The good stuff is still often grossly overrated though.

I don't really suggest things are overrated. As time goes on and the word gets used way too often, so hell, if anything the word "overrated" is overrated. I'll just use music that some-to-many people like that I think simply svcks and/or annoys me to listen to.

  • Pop Music (turn on your radio station, and batter up)
  • Most Black Metal (especially with the excessively low and high pitched vocals, it's simply too difficult to ignore how annoying it sounds -- too many examples)
  • Death metal that tries to sound like Black Metal (ex: Deicide)
  • Whiny, /wrist nu-rock/nu-metal that takes complaining and sadness just a bit too far in their music (example: Three Days Grace)
  • Any type of metal that I can run side by side with a song from the cookie monster and it would sound virtually the same (example: Lamb of God)
  • And since it's a popular topic, I would also add to the Beatles because they were nothing but 60s pop music, and I'm no fan of that. I do like some of the ideals of Lennon, but that's for another subject.. the music is annoying to say the least.

There's more but I don't care to spend more time with music that is annoying.

Most people have poor taste when compared to your taste, you mean. :P

I like The Beatles and Pink Floyd. I hardly find either of them overrated. If anything, I'd find the Beatles underrated. At least around here, you never, ever hear them on the radio or anywhere else.

I'm sorry, but what?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQal-lJrSLI. I'm not a massive Beatles fan by any standard, but they did so much for music, I would go as far to say they revolutionised it. Very few bands have been able to create both cutting-edge experimental music, and reach the people. In fact, no band has been able to reach the people like the Beatles did. Do some research before you call them a boy-band. They also made 12 albums, within a decade. Most artists don't make 12 albums ever. Note, they are overrated, but not because they were a glorified boy-band. Some people latch onto them without ever really listening to them. Likewise, people bash them without ever really listening to them, I'd say they're misunderstood.

I can't believe how much hate there is for the Beatles (and, incidentally, how hard people find it to spell 'Beatles'). I'm no fan, but I can appreciate their music and the effect it had on other artists.

There is only one song of lady gaga's i like and that is brown eyes i think. It doesn't sound like she normally does. But i think metallica is overrated i actually liked the saint anger album since it was them getting out the demons they had. Lil wayne is overrated enough said. T-Pain is overrated again enough said. Actually a lot of mainstream rap is overrated except bone thugz n harmony, twista and few others. Actually there are alot of overrated bands and artist too many for me to list.

I'm going to have to take the 'it's subjective' route.

However, I don't understand why anybody would like The Beatles, any metal whatsoever, Tupac or the vast (vast) majority of country.

Green Day. I can't honestly think of anyone else known for being good that isn't at the moment.

I went into the Beatles music young and not knowing them for being good. Let's just say my mind was officially blown.

I think the problem is people having high expectations of them, and they don't understand everything they did. Being a musician, I understand all the things they changed and invented, they were the Citizen Kane of bands. To make 12 albums that are all known as some of the best of all time in a decade...it's just unheard of.

When people say Green Day, are they talking about all their songs, American Idiot or that new album I can't remember the name of? American Idiot isn't great, but some of their older stuff (most of their International Superhits album) is actually pretty good.

I like their older stuff like Dookie. But now they're just whiny brats. And I hate when people call them punk music. No....just no.

Ehhh, a few off the top of my head

The Beatles
Lady Gaga
Marilyn Manson
Most any metal
60's 'revolution' music in general.

My reasoning?

Beatles- Are nothing special, generic to me.

Gaga- Generic popstar with a 'OMG SHE'S SO TALENTED' following, just like most every other popstar.

Marilyn Manson- Used to like him, then I kind of realized his style was the same through and through, and it's the go to name for saying 'Oh I'm (Insert Dark lifestyle name) because I
listen to Marilyn Manson'.'

Metal- Just seems to much the go to for anything pertaining to violence, destruction, negative emotions, etc

60's revolution music- It's the same obnoxious hippie sound in my ears.

@Lucky38- I'd say they are more in the vein of pop punk, akin to Alkaline Trio, but to consider Green Day anywhere near the sound of Alkaline Trio is a crime.

Now why would you think that of the band that defines revolution of music? I would love to hear your reasons.

It's nothing hostile, like, I don't go around challenging peoples love for them. Like you are challenging my dislike :P

But I just hate that whole '60's sound'. I personally feel the 'revolution' ruined music. But different strokes for different folks.

@Elder- Clutch is a pretty good band if you ask me.

It's probably because they're old. Any revolutions they made have been replicated and improved upon so many times already. Why would I go back and listen to them when I have no appreciation for what music was like before and can listen to any number of much more refined bands today?

You're right, they are pretty generic. Mostly because they practically defined the genre.

So the Beatles and the music "revolution" ruined music, but you like Clutch. Clutch use distorted guitars, take one wild stab in the dark as to who introduced distortion. I understand you not liking them, but saying they're overrated without fully recognising what they did for music doesn't work for me. This isn't really limited to whether you enjoy their music.
