most pointless game i have ever seen.........EVER

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:35 pm

Scroched Earth and Worms were awesome. Angry Birds is just the latest reincarnation of such "artillery" games. Haven't played it myself, my cellphone isn't supported :(

see though, I can find games just like angry birds on free online game sites. They are almost exactly the same, but they are free to play whenever you want them.

In my opinion, it's pointless unless it has killstreaks and quickscopes.

So just out of curiosity, to those who think this game is stupid: Have any of you ever played Braid? Or Limbo?

if you talking about the xbox games (i googled them), those look like 2D platformers. they are actual games. your character moves around and overcomes obstacles and im assuming must achieve a goal like getting puzzle pieces for braid. not my cup of tea personally, mostly cause i dont like 2D platformers anymore, but i dont see anything wrong with them. limbo looks like a silent hill platformer. :)

if a game about sitting at a dinner table (freaking tiny one at that) is "art" then a game about sitting at the bus stop waiting for the next bus should be considered "art" as well. i think art and artistic get thrown around alot and alot of crap gets labeled art just because someone says it is and there are people who are gullible enough to believe them as long as it has some inane philosophical excuse. if me "not getting it" means im some sort of trogledyte then ill where that badge proudly. it means that i havent been duped by some con artist into believing something is art when its clearly is junk.

So what in your opinion is art? And "Not this" doesn't count as a valid answer.

the best description ive seen is that its an interactive "book". and no, not all literature is art. this may indeed be art to some people but then again so was dipping a statue of the virgin mary in urin. most sane people dont look at that as art. i take the approach that the supreme court justice took with porm. "i cant put my finger on it but when i see it i know it."

the biggest thing for me is that if its something that prettty much anyone can do then its value as art is questionable. take a look at alot of modern art like throwing paint up in the air and letting a jet engine splatter it over a big canvas..............thats not art. that is something that i could do at an airport and it literally only takes seconds to do. even though picassos stuff looks goofy to me its something that most people wouldnt be able to emulate so i consider it art. its overrated in my view but i certainly couldnt do it.

the best art is art that tries to replicate real life which is why think davincies stuff was the best. his anatomy and engineering drawings were second to none.

i find that there is a parallel between paris fashion and alot of art. people make a big deal about those god awful garments (like the ones made out of garbage) of course you never see anyone wear have this stuff. all modern art and alot of modern fashion is a display in snobbery pure and simple. people say things or create things and tell snobs that its unique and that only people of their caliber could possibly understand it and that common people "dont get it". its nothing more than a con job to get stupid insecure people to pay thousands of dollars for an ugly dress (queue the dresses celebrities wear at awards shows) or modern art.

-snip-

Clearly, you don't get it. That's not an insult, but it's very obvious that there is something about this game (and the things you listed in the quoted post) that is appealing to others and not you. It isn't about being snobby or conning people. There are millions of folks, some gamers, that "don't get" FPS, RPGs or platformers. Again, nothing wrong with that and this isn't a jab at any of those people, it's just not their thing.

Different strokes for different folks.

my personal opinion would be that games require a certain threshold of interactivity... or it becomes nothing more then a video or interactive story

and i wouldn't consider buying this video

I will agree that dipping a statue of Mary into urine isn't art. Why? Because it takes no talent. Now if the person made the statue and then dipped it into urine, then I would consider it art.

The creator of this game had an idea in mind when making it, and to me he executed the idea perfectly.

He did a good job for what he was aiming for and he did very well with 3D modeling.

I would consider 3D modeling art, that is why I consider this art. This isn't much of a game, it is an interactive painting.

I guess that's one way to look at it. However, I see it as the people who created the game are just making a cash grab.

Must. Resist.

That is a very weak argument. So basically art is only what really talented people can make? Try telling that to a kid for starters. Tell him that the drawing he just did for you is just a bunch of talentless scribbles.

Art is/can be anything that any one person finds beautiful. A prime example of this is a piece of splintered wood I found in the wake of a tornado that passed near my house. Is it art? Not to you, to you it's just a stick. To me? It's an awe-inspiring reminder that nature is a very VERY scary thing. I also look of it, the way that one side is splintered and the other side is perfectly smooth, the bark stripped off of it by the wind.

The point is that art isn't just an object, or a picture. Rather, it's an idea. All art has some form of an idea behind it, it's just that some people either don't know how to recognize it or just don't care.

It's Da Vinci by the way.

Edit: And the best art being that which tries to replicate real life the best? If I want to look at something that resembles real life I'll just look in a mirror, or look outside for that matter. Art is a medium which is used to convey an original idea. By that logic, the best fantasy stories are the ones which mimic Lord of the Rings the best.

Grrr. And I promised myself I wouldn't get riled up tonight. :toughninja:

um...........kids pretty much make talentless scribbles........thats why you lie to them and say its the best picture of mommy or daddy they have ever seen.

and "art is an idea not an object, but only certain people can possible understand it." im gonna have to ask my friend if his prof said that one yet. alot of this is just empty catch phrases. "capturing the essence of the soul" "visualizing the struggle of mans conscience" etc. blah blah blah.

not sure what you mean by the stick example............if i saw debris on a large scale from a tornado i dont think id have any problems appreciating the destructive force of wind. the stick isnt art though its just a stick........and no its not nature or tornado art

going with the art is an idea not an object then if i spent half an hour on a drawing that looked like a stick figure guy shooting bazookas at aliens and one of my friends who can actually draw does the same thing in ten minutes and it looks 1000 time better. since it was my idea does that mean that my picture is better than his?

art is kind of like philosophy........a good chunk of it is just [censored].

Rorschach tests would just be blobs on a page to you wouldn't they?

It doesn't matter how good of a drawing you make, as long as it conveys the idea behind it well enough in the eyes of the creator.

And yeah, I was right, you do think it's just a stick. Never mind that it's an example of how close me and my family was from death and all that.

I give up with you, there's just no arguing with brick walls. <_<

Your life must be a bit boring if the only place you can find art is where it's explicitly prescribed to you in an easy to swallow pill form.

Generally I'm not a huge advocate of the whole "Games as art" movement, however, I don't understand how a medium that incorporates several forms of art couldn't be art. That makes no sense to me at all. I'm not sure if you're arguing for the sake of trolling or if you genuinely believe the stuff you're saying but you seem to be having trouble looking past the physical, even on a basic level like the metaphor between the stick and the tornado.

I'll give you a perfect example of a atypical form of art. http://www.skytopia.com/project/fractal/mandelbulb.html. It's made using a mathematical algorithm based off
of the one that defines a Mandelbrot set. I don't know how anyone could look at that and not see art.
Not only that, it exists because of an idea. Which is just a mathematical formula.

Art is something you could appreciate, it's something beautiful people by people. It's not common knowledge or academically classified catagory. Arts in general is rubbish, but we love them nonetheless. Everything is art to a certain degree. Without art, you will not have Oblivion, you will not have Fallout 3, you will only have Pong. Hell even Pong is an art to a certain degree. You can throw out what mathematic algorithm out there. They are supposed to be math, and nothing but that. Arts is created by mankind, we took appreciation over something, and called it arts. It's intention that counts.

"All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex, and vital. When critics disagree, the artist is in accord with hiself. We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
All art is quite useless" - Oscar Wilde

Games are useless, and this thread to begin with, is useless.

Don't buy it, problem solved.

I haven't tried the game and it could very well be terrible, but at least it's something relatively original as opposed to most games these days. More of the same is great, I'm looking forward to a lot of games that don't really do anything new, but it's also nice to see people trying new things. As a game design student with ambitions of doing that for a living someday if I can I try to think about this a lot, whenever I see a game that's different from the norm I take notice and i get intrigued.

I have an example of an incredibly powerfull game that is very simple and very short, but leaves a huge impact. Google "Every day the same dream" if you haven't played it already, it'll take you five minutes tops and you won't regret it.
