Most Ridiculous "Realistic" Plots.........

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:04 am

i was just reading the background for the upcoming FPS Homefront. and i have to say without a doubt that it is the currently king of absurdly stupid plots outside of a james bond laser o doom satellite game. in fact i instantly thought of the bond film where the north koreans managed to get hold of a *sigh* laser o doom and were planning on invading with a fleet of hovercraft.

revitalized soviet union........sure, china......somewhat believable. north korea successfully invading the US mainland. come on. who wrote this crap. WTF

this isnt as nutty as the duke nukem or gears of war plots which is why it am limiting it to the most asinine plot in a game that is somewhat "realistic". they picked an enemy that noone likes and presumably not have to worry about lost sales if they had picked china or russia or a coalition of middle eastern countries, but in doing so they made up the silliest plot in recent history. i couldnt stop laughing while i was reading it.

please prove me wrong and mention some worse plots so that i can better put the game in perspective and at least while im playing it keep telling myself "well, at least its not as dumb as that other game"

I rarely see FPS games with a sensible story. They are always James Bond plots on LSD.

What did you expect from a FPS. Even the good ones, Older R6, Operation flash-point etc. had mediocre or worse stories. Not many games themselves have good stories. the most promise I see upcoming is LA Noire and even then, it will probably suffer from numerous cliches found in the genre. the fact is, while good stories and good games aren't mutually exclusive, its hard to balance them.

Doom has the best plot of FPS'. Half-Life perfected it. Half-Life 2 expanded it to post-apocalyptic :D

Act of War had a pretty nifty if surreal plot too, a private army lands a full-scale attack on US mainland in an effort to get USA to pull it's troops from foreign countries.

Homefront is not ridiculous. It's NOT about the current People's Republic of Korea invading, but about a post-peak oil, significantly China-supported re-united Korea doing this. If you take a closer look at the supposed timeline, it's about as realistic as most predictions of what the world will look like 20 years from now.

Where Korea takes over Japan and only American citizens can stop Korea... Bleh patriotic BS imo.
I have lost count, Ammerica is obsessed with wars with communists, despite never actually beating communists.
Well its either communists, nazis or terrorists.

Black ops campaign was terrible. Russians are the bad boys again. That wasn't a surpise! Мы не так уж плохо: (
Halflife 2 has the best plot.

I have lost count, Ammerica is obsessed with wars with communists, despite never actually beating communists.

They're used so much because communists tend to be more numerous, well-trained, equipped, and organized than terrorists. And their governments tend to be totalitarian. And historically they were opposed to the United States and western Europe.

Edit: While alien invasions avoid making any real-life groups the antagonist, you can't really have an FPS with an alien invasion without some degree of science fiction. While that isn't necessarily bad, when game makers want to make an FPS without science fiction elements, they must find a more mundane enemy.

So what? The game doesn't seem to give us we're-the-best patriotism like the CoD games, but rather show actual people defending their homes.
Which might be because, fun fact,...

I'll help you put it in perspective, its not a realistic story, its a what if scenario of an invasion on America.
It shows the people struggle to survive and rebel after an occupation (and of course... shoot loads of people), apart from a few thought out stories there are basically no good FPS games' stories anyways.
At least Homefront's setting looks kind of refreshing compared to all other FPS games out there...

The USA equally surrendered. This is a game about the resistance, and they plan to add new stories in other countries if this game succeeds. I don't really see why you need to be so negative.

The plot works because it's set in an alternate universe.

I think it's interesting.

No Japan and others just surrendered. USA army got its ass kicked, now the people fight. Again like to point out Japan did neither. Yeah not getting a "America [censored] yeah" feeling from this.

They want to move away from the whole patriotic crap where people are always on about thier country being so great, why not jsut have a game where America invades somewhere else for no reason, and are the bad guys. Oh maybe a game where America isnt the bastion of goodness in games would be jsut a bit too far out, lets just have communists invade again, only this time they arent russian.

The USA isn't a totalitarianism. It's more effective when the antagonist is one who who will take away all of your freedoms if they win. Otherwise it's just one nation fighting another, with no sense of urgency on the part of the player, other than simply doing what they're ordered.

Because then they just alienated a good chunk of their potential player-base. EA had to change the name of the Taliban in their game because that bothered people. I don't think those same people are gonna be too happy about America being the bad guy.

IIRC, Russia did ban MW2, and since I obviously don't have a stat page in front of me with the exact number of FPS players in either country, I'm just guessing, but I think America has more.

Um, Homefront has probably the most original story we've seen in years. I'm sick to death of the tidal wave of HURR-HURR-big-beefy-American-marines-rock-invade-countries-kick-ass FPS games that we've seen so far.

A story needn't be realistic if it's interesting, and this certainly qualifies.
