Most terrifying moments

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:09 am

I think my most terrifying moment was when I used a spell on an ancient lich that both traps the soul and does damage...thing is, I didn't have any empty soul traps. Coming from Morrowind, where soul-trapped monsters die normally even if you don't have a soul gem, I was surprised and terrified to see the message "the monster would have died, but the soul has nowhere to go..." and then I realized that this thing was now indestructible until the soul trap spell wore off. Spent the next several minutes racing as fast as I could through the dungeon trying to lose the creature, healing and protecting myself from its attacks, until my own soul trap spell finally wore off and the lich died. I had NO idea that would happen! Normally Ancient Liches aren't a problem for my character (he can easily kill them with 1 or 2 castings of a couple custom spells) but this time it was my own magic that made it indestructible. Terrifying, but ingenious on the devs' parts...

HAH! Yea, I remember doing that once, but I did it to an Atronach, not a Lich. A few times I did it on purpose to a rat or something just so I could beat up on it for good weapon practice.

Personally, I'm not sure which is worse: (1) that all enemies have tell-tale sounds, so you know there's a dreaded vampire ancient somewhere nearby, waiting to kick your ass, or (2) that human enemies make no sounds whatsoever save those that come from cutting you to ribbons. Most of my jump-out-of-the-chair-yelpings come from finding a nightblade has snuck up on me from behind.

Aye, Hearing the screeching of some banshee in a godforsaken dungeon added more atmosphere than any amount of graphical window dressing.

When I heard it was going to be free and then I thought how many new threads were going to pop up here asking for help getting it to install.

I just started playing so I'd say when I first encountered a Vampire. I was level 4. I died, needless to say.

It stands between VENGEANCE! and the horrible, horrible sounds of... I am not even sure who makes it, there are some grueling screeches from the dungeons in Daggerfall sometimes.

Just walking along in a dungeon, minding my own business, then BAM! I open a door and get a fireball to the face. Luckily, I absorb magick, but still. Frikin Daedra Lords.

Another freaky moment was when I was looking down an unexplored hall, decided not to try it yet, and turned around to see a giant standing right there. It didn't even make any noise, which was strange because they usually make really obvious noises.

There are lots of freaky, unsettling monster noises...I think the one that freaked me out the most the first time I heard it was either the skeleton's screech or the daedra seducer's insane laughter...but the one that still gets me every time is the soft whisper of a ghost, because they're hard to see at all until they're on top of you, and the possibility of paralysis from an unseen source always gets to me.

Yeah, but you could hear it all the way across the dungeon, so you never knew if you were right on top of it or if it was far away

Yup, same here. That, and the Naked Lady's laughter (a nymph giggle), freaking creepy. Umm, the adrenaline of dodging firey atronach basts as it just gets closer and closer until it chases you down a dark corridor... lighting the way in front of you, from behind. At least that's how my first encounter was, pretty heroic huh. :shakehead: Nope.
