Most Underrated Games

Mount & Blade: Warband. It's got a 78 on MC, and it definitely deserves way more than that.

CoD: World at War (popular, yes... but heavily criticised by fans despite being amazing and perhaps the best in the series)

It's one of the better ones, yes, but I still think W@W is too short. CoD2 holds the title of best in the series for me.

As for games I think are heavily underrated...Deus Ex, by a long shot. True, this forum contains many fans, but that game's quality:fanbase ratio is WAY too [censored] uneven.

Same goes to Planescape: Torment.

Also popping into my head, Secret of Evermore. I haven't seen much criticism of the game that isn't whining that it's not Secret of Mana. It had a creative magic system, lots of secrets, and was just as fun to play for me.

QFT. I have NEVER understood people who complain about SoE not being SoM. Just because they have the word "Secret" at the start of the title doesn't mean they are related. I LOVE SoE, it's a great game with, as you said, a very creative magic system(alchemy!), and a very hilarious B-Rated storyline that is bound to draw more then a few chuckles from a person.

Illusion of Gaia is another one. Excellent game, but it so very rarely EVER mentioned in Great RPG threads, it astounds me that so many people overlook this absolute gem of a game. I remember keeping a journal of my game play on this game when I was in 7th or 8th grade. Only a few games ever inspired that kind of devotion in me.

People talk about games having sad or moving scenes, but they know nothing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Way_of_the_Samurai_3 have a metacritic score in the 50s, but I greatly enjoyed it (and the previous WotS games).

None of the WotS games have sold well, and the developer been forced(?) to use a different western publisher each time, so I'm quite worried that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Way_of_the_Samurai_4 won't reach the western audience. Which would be very unfortunate :(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Remnant is also a somewhat recent game I feel is underrated with it's metacritic score of 66. Sure, the hero is an annoying idiot, but the game isn't that bad.

You do understand that this is a mod for Oblivion? I really don't see how this equates to being an "underrated game".

Have you even played it?

It's more than just a mod. It's a game that surpasses Oblivion in pretty much every way possible. Much more content, a completely hand-designed map, etc. Simply put, it's the best RPG of the last decade.

It's one of the better ones, yes, but I still think W@W is too short. CoD2 holds the title of best in the series for me.

Too short? You mean singleplayer I take it?

I never even bother with the singleplayer in CoD games... or in any FPS game for that matter. Multiplayer W@W was amazing though.

 Whoops. But yes, I was talking single player-wise. I'm almost exclusively into SP games, though I have played online on occasion.

I LOVED the first Way of the Samurai, it was a great game. I haven't had the chance to play any of the others, but I've heard they are quite good as well.

GunGriffon Blaze
Lego Rock Raiders
Gundam Battle Assault 2
Katamari Forever

Gungriffon is one of my most favorite mech games of all time with slick controls and weapon handling and surprised more mech games are not designed this way.
Lego Rock Raiders - most underrated RTS of all time.
Gundam Battle assault 2 because it was a very fun fighting game and yea.

I view Nehrim similar to the way I view New Vegas. It uses the same engine, but stands on its own.

I liked World at War, but I think Call of Duty 2 is the best Call of Duty game (though I haven't liked either entry since World at War).

That sounds like a very interesting game, I'll look around to see if I can find it. Is the story linked to the previous games, or can I just jump in at number 3?

I didn't really like it that much. Very impressive for being a mod, sure, but after 10ish hours of exploring I was rather bored of it. The story didn't interest me at all. The capital Erothin did impress me a lot though, compared to the relatively plain towns of Oblivion.

As for other mods, my favorite mod of all time remain to be http://www.thief2x.com/, which very much feels like an official Thief 2 expansion :)

The games storys are separate and there are no recurring locations or characters either. They just have a similiar premise and gameplay. They are all fairly short, but offer a lot of choices and many different endings, so there are many things you can try differently if you try it a second time.

Be warned though, the gameplay can hardly be called polished, so some oversight is needed. Don't expect the same movement fluidity as in Assassin's Creed or anything :P

Another interesting thing is that WotS3 use Gamebryo, just like Oblivion.

Alan Wake

I actually thought Alan Wake was extremely over-rated. I borrowed it from a friend last week to keep me going until L.A. Noire and it didn't meet my expectations at all. One of the most repetitive games I've ever played. The combat was good but there wasn't enough enemy/environment variety, and the story got a bit ridiculous towards the end. Not to mention the generic characters. It seemed like they were trying to combine Silent Hill and Heavy Rain, but it just didn't work out.

I have often thought of buying this game. It sounds interesting, and definitely original to other games I own. How short is it? I understand there is a good replay factor.

It's obscure now, but I enjoyed the British RTS "Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_Waters:_Antaeus_Rising

Spoiler
The suicide mission at the end was impressive.

Mirror's Edge deserved more. Sure, the story was weak and some of the inside levels were annoying, but the whole parkour thing is great! :)

And it got due credit for the parkour.

It fell down in reviews for its weak story and occasionally poor level design, as well it should. I loved Mirror's Edge but I wouldn't call it underrated.

I kind of wanna say Genji: Days of the Blade. It's sitting at a 55 on metacritic and was largely ignored during the PS3's launch because Resistance was the hot launch title, but I thought it was pretty good. It had its fair share of problems, such as bad voice acting, iffy camera angles and the annoying archer enemies, but I still had a hoot with it.

At least it gave us the Giant Enemy Crab. :whistling:

I own it! Used to play it all the time. The open sandbox was so fun to play. Never quite understood the .. ah the name escapes me.. the metrosixual winged race.
