Most useless or Best Perk

Post » Fri Aug 28, 2009 9:59 pm

Best of course is jury rigging. Its great no matter that kind of type your using (unless thrown, which is kinda annoying.)
Worst is the quick draw, you can draw faster yes, but that means nothing if you can't fire for a while.
One I love the most though is given perk ranger takedown, (force push in the face)

I find the very simple and amazingly cheap 'weapon repair kit' trumps the jury rigging perk. Easy and very cheap to buy parts, easily scavenged too, for it and 50 repair. I only fix armor at the repair guys.

Favorite: Cowboy. As if the Brush Gun wasn't a powerhouse already, I can now kill almost anything in 1-3 headshots.

Least Favorite: [lots of them]

NOTE: Swift Learner is not that bad (2 or 3 ranks) when you are constantly gaining XP from Speech challenges. Instead of gaining 50 XP, you gain 65 XP, it builds up. If you don't do Speech, then yeah, SL is stupid.

It's only useless if you think the game already levels the player way too fast and you're using a mod designed to prevent exp. gains. hahah ;)

Since JuryRigging works with armor as well as weapons, I don't think weapon repair kits 'trump' anything. However, JR is not my fave perk (tho it is one I like a whole lot/glad is there) simply because I have far better things I wish to put my skill points in first. Usually by the time I have Jury Rigging, the game is more than half over. Even further if you're using a severe XP-reducer mod.

Well, I only have the 360 version of New Vegas, and not the PC version, so I do not know much about "XP prevention mods". (Or any other mods)
In my opinion, the game doesn't level you too fast, in fact, if it does level you up too fast, I'd love that concept.

If you explore a lot, all those things giving 50xp (enemies, locks, etc)+ huge quest exp...I'd be lvl 30 long before I ever set foot inside the strip. :) 1st run, I kept thinking lvling had to slow down at some point. Felt like I turned lvl 21 then did a few quests and killed some monsters and ding I was 22. That was when I made the XP mod. heh

Jury Rigging is overrated but can be useful if you want to stick with the riot light armor as you can repair it with any clothes whatsoever and you will need to as it has low HP.

Worst perk is Here and Now and like a dummy I took that one.

Best Perk is probably finesse as criticals are extremely powerful as is and getting them more often and for all character types to me makes for the all around best perk.

Favourite perk.... all but two.
Least favourite.. Swift learner and Here and now.
These were fillers in FO1+, but in FO3 and NV don't even raise to that standard of flags.

I agree

Favorite: Cowboy. Because it's overpowered.

Useless: "Here and Now". Because it's literary -1 perks.

Best Perks for me: Animal Friend, Comprehension, Jury Rigging
Worst perks for me: Any perk related to energy weapons (I use bullets), Exp boosting ones, purely since the game levels you relatively fast.

Best perk : Laser Commander, +15% damage and +10% crit chance for all laser based weapons, now THAT 'S A PERK worth having.

Worst Perk(s): so many of them...Computer Whiz, Infiltrator, Robotics Expert, Life Giver, Entomologist, Retention...honestly, were they made to paliate the lack of ideas or what? I dare anybody to tell me they picked any of those in their sane judgement.

I take Robotics Expert and Entomologist on almost every character, because I like to hunt Sentry Bots and Giant Radscorpions and the additional damage comes in quite handy. That said, I can see skipping them as they are situationally useful rather than generally useful.

Life Giver: sometimes I take it, sometimes I don't, I'm kinda torn on it because the way my game is modded the extra HP come in handy but at the same time an extra 30HP is often insufficient when going against high-end opponents.

I agree on Laser Commander, and in fact I modded Plasma Spaz to work the same way since I do not use VATS but do use Plasma weapons.

As for worst perks:

Here and Now
Swift Learner (this was actually quite useful in FO1&2 unless you were willing to grind a ridiculous number of random encounters)
Infiltrator
Computer Whiz

Most of the rest are situational for me, although the VATS perks would be must-haves if I did make a character who used it.

Best: Jury Rig, Hand Loader, Shotgun Surgeon, Cowboy, Comprehension

Worst: Here and Now, Swift Learner, anything VATS related

There is so much to do out there you can easily make Level 30 before you set foot on the strip for the first time....why waste perk slots on something that become worthless once you reach the level cap? I use Speech all the time and I don't take Swift Learner at all...I use the slots on things that give me new abilities or benefits...usually to kill more efficiently...right up to the end instead. IMO it's only useful to people with no patience that have to level up ASAP to be happy. More power to 'em but I won't be joining them.

I find Jury Rig so spectacularly useful in so many ways I'm surprised the usual suspects aren't composing thread after thread demanding it be taken away or nerfed...it's even better than the Vending Machine, whose normal function some call a "exploit".

To me, Jury Rig helps makes NV a more spiritual experience. To those without Jury Rig and Survival skill, the Mojave is a harsh wasteland where the means of survival are only present in isolated pockets of civilization. To those of us with them, it's a tough but loving mother who provides her children with her endless bounty. Where some see a empty and desolate wilderness, we see a place that teems with life that can easily provide the Mojave's Apex Predator...the Courier....with everything he/she needs to thrive. Every creature has it's place....from Geckos who nourish out bodies and provide hides that can be sold for caps to Vipers, Powder Gangers, Fiends and Freeside thugs who provide clothing Outfit Repair Kits, armor Armor Repair Kits, and weapons Weapon Repair Kits, along with other useful things like chems or sometimes better weapons that enable the Courier to harvest prey more efficiently. They can even serve as food for those inclined that way. If the mojave's bounty is in excess of one's need...and it often is...that can be taken to vendors and sold to buy the few items the Mojave cannot provide herself.

Worst Perk: Lead Belly: Why would I need to drink lots of slightly-less irradiated water when I can make Mass Purified Water in crafting, which gives me 30 bottles of clean water for each set of ingredients?
Best Perk: Comprehension: How could you not want double magazine points and duration and double permanent skill points with skill books?

Okay then.

I took Entomologist and Retention a few times during my character. Entomologist is extremely useful for clearing out the infamous Cazadors.

Retention can be quite useful in some circumstances. Combining it with Comprehension can compensate for early game skills quite easily. One good example is Nipton actually. There's around 3 or 4 average locks there. If you have a mod that slightly increases run speed, you can lockpick and every one of them within the 60 second timeframe of a skill mag. If not, then Retention is a safer bet. Another instance is Camp Searchlight with the terminals. Retention has some uses, especially early game, but late game, it becomes less useful due to having your skills up'd.

I picked Entomologist because of all the radscorpions. It then helped with all the cazadors. It isn't the best perk, but it is a good perk, especially when low level.

Most useless perk is Here and Now. Best depends on the type of character I'm playing.

Retention+Comprehension+Real Police Story=win

Gorbad has the same problem as you, as for my self I've never needed to quick draw that much.

why is swift learner usless and here and now is such a waste. Its like here pick this then you dont have to pick any good perks. Its more of a short term goal than a long term and its a poor example of a short term goal if any.

for me, usually finesse & better criticals, followed by, yes, chemist.
chemist also affects the food items, if you're playing on hc mode, and have a decent survival skill, this makes you a demigod.

Most useful (as in handy): Jury Rigging period.
Least useful: Infiltrator/Computer Whiz and Swift Learning. We have quicksave/load and abundant experience to be had.

Your disagreement with the Cowboy Perk, I disagree, you don't understand, its not the type of weapon, its just the weapon, Brush Gun, 78 DAM raised to 98 DAM, makes the DPS 271.

Do you use the Hunting Shotgun? and the perk And Stay Back? Is your guns skill 75 over? Is your strength high enough?
Cuz if you don't have And Stay Back then stay back from the Shotgun Surgeon (Person and Perk)
