motherboard graphics card compat question

Post » Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:20 am

I have a n video geforce 9800 for my computer but an old-as-balls motherboard. Any ideas as to which motherboards are compatible with this graphics card? I've got a budget of £50 ($80ish)

:thanks:

It should be compatible with any as long as it's not an AGP card.

What letters come after the 9800- GT, GTX, GTX+, or GX2? All are PCIE slot, so should work with any current motherboard, but the power requirements vary a bit, so we need to know the size of your power supply.

Besides Uncle Fuzzy's mentioning of asking for the PSU of your current build, the internal space is another big one. Both whether you have a free slot above your current card as well as length. Some cards (many modern gaming ones) take up two slots (of the back panel, not two PCI slots) and can be quite long as to not fit in some mini- or even mid-towers

As mentioned above...the only one slot is the 9800GT.

All the other 9800 series (above that 9800GT), are all dual slot GPU's.

So tell us, which exact 9800 do you have, and the PSU power output as well. !!!!!

I thing the 9800GT is an PCI-e GPU and all others all PCI-e 2.0., burt i am not 100% sure.

Either way, any mobo should be ok, with your GPU. !!!!

---------------

The big problem, relies somewhere else...

I don't know, what mobo do you have. I say that, because if you have a 775 socket mobo, you should consider to change your CPU as well - or you should try to find the appropriate mobo for your CPU. !!!!! (in this case the 775)

So, if you have an older mobo, you maybe should consider to change some extra parts.

I read the OP as having a working computer, but wanting to upgrade just the motherboard. A CPU/mobo upgrade would probably be better.

The GPU should fit all new boards.

The PSU might be OK since it's powering the system now.

What size is the current motherboard- ATX, EATX, Micro ATX, Mini ITX?

If you're keeping your current CPU, what is it/what socket does it use?

If I read the OP wrong, give us all the right details.

Hallo to you. !!!!! :icecream:

That's i am afraid off, because he said "but an old-as-balls motherboard" lol - so if his Mobo is too old, then probably a new one (can or will) not operate with his CPU.

Plus, if the motherboard truly is super old, it likely doesn't use DDR3 memory modules, the current norm. Unlike with PCI-E, DDR3 slots will not accept older technology. Buying a new motherboard could mean also buying new RAM.

Ah, I misread it the other way, wanting to replace the GPU

Given how the OP has virtually no budget, there's no way he can replace the CPU + mobo + RAM with anything of any real decent quality. Even the cheapest desktop CPU is going to set you back $50, and same for even the cheapest mobo, putting him out of budget.

@Anglo

Solution: If you have an 775 Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157359 ( 65$) (this particularly Mobo uses DDR2 as DDR 3 Memory as well !!!!!)

If you have DDR memory modules: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157338 ( 50$)

Those are good suggestions and all, but it's kinda like the OP throwing away money at this point. For most people, the motherboard isn't really something that's all that important or needs to do much. Upgrading a mobo on a dead socket is just throwing away money. It's best to just save it until the OP can do a CPU + mobo upgrade

just my two cents.
