Mouse and keyboard vs controller

Post » Sun Dec 28, 2008 1:32 pm

OK..i'm curious. I played FO3 for about a year on the xbox before moving to he PC. When i started playing on the PC, i tried playing using the mouse and keyboard but just couldn't get used to it. so i bought an Xbox wireless controller.

I know that mouse and keyboard offers more accuracy etc but i'm willing to give all that up for comfort.

So what i wanna know is...what do you ladies and germs preffers...and why

Unless the game is only on the console, or it has wonky DRM, I play the PC version of all my games.

Keyboard and Mouse all the way. If I could use a Keyboard and mouse on the consoles I would.

I used to be a console controller type of guy, but in the last 10 years, I have "lost" my controller skills and touch. Now, I can be more accurate and steady with the mouse than I ever could with a joystick. Plus, Hotkeys make this the preferred way to play.

Ive seen first hand how bad mouse/keyboard ass owns controls lol.Mouse and keyboard gives u unbeatable accuracy /speed /i always thought my control would whoop some ass but helll no lo.l.This is the ultimate reason why console and pc gamers arent allowed to mingle ingame its a massively unfair advantage.

I find gamepads to be unbearably uncomfortable - the last console I owned was an NES and that's part of the reason. After an hour or so my hands will just ache . . . I imagine if I used gamepads more often I'd get used to them but I also dislike the very limited number of keys you can access.

I do understand that others are in the opposite boat, personally I think it would be great if every game tried to support both, it's a shame Microsoft and Sony so staunchly refuse to allow official keyboard and mouse support on their consoles.

@CCNA

I see your point.but the thing with M&K is, it's not really noob friendly IMO. And as far as accuracy, does it really matter with RPG games such as FNV and FO 3?

You can easily spend hours playing both these games and comfort ( at least in my case) takes priority over accuracy etc.

It does take some getting used to. Back in the days of Morrowind I had more than 250 hours on that game before I moved to PC for that title. Up until then I had been playing console games for about 15 years, playing on the PC for only a few titles. It took me about 4 to 6 hours to be comfortable on the K/M and I had experience using the K/M in other games.

As far as accuracy goes, if you use VATS then no. But, if you don't use VATS and this is not in Oblivion, then it does matter to an extent. I don't remember if this was an option in Oblivion, but in Morrowind there was a way to control your attack based on the weapon you had. The mouse made it easier to do those attacks.

However it all comes down to what you like to use when playing the game. I just suggest that you use the K/M long enough to get comfortable with it as there are games that just do not work well with the controller. Just like I would suggest that folks who use the K/M all the time get comfortable with the controller if there is a game that you want to use that on. This way you have the best controller for each game you play.

At least now, with Games for Windows, you don't have to spend an entire day trying to get a controller to work with a game. With GFW titles, they are designed to work with the 360 controller along with the K/M. I remember the pains I would go through trying to get controllers to work with Morrowind for folks. I still shudder at those memories.

I have little experience on the controller side.
However I often wondered if power attacks were easier on them than the keyboard.
It took a while for me to get used to press the button to move the exact right way.
While holding down the attack button on the mouse at the right time, while avoiding or blocking hits in oblivion.

Also if you don't fast travel the keyboards are great, if you need a drink or want to talk.
You can just hit Q and casually guide the mouse to stop walking into walls.

I prefer the controller, espically the 360 controller. I am having a hard time trying to play Morrowind or Oblivion on my laptop, so I got a $30 gamepad/controller/what ever you call it. I wish I had the money to buy a 360 controller for PC but I am not paying $70 +Taxes for it.

Also I hear and was told that the Wired 360 controller is better for the PC than wireless. I guess you are lucky you got your working.

So I am the opposite for most people. I prefer the controller over keyboard and mouse. Microsoft did something right with the 360 controler it just's melds into my hands and I have comfort for hours on it.

It is not so much the Wireless Controller, but the Wireless Interface that is connected to the PC that is problematic for some people. Most have no problems at all using the wireless on the PC. It is all in how the OS/Hardware combo deals with the controller. Could be interference from other wireless devices too. Or, stray light or any of several other issues. For the folks who do have issues, they usually end up with the Wired controller.

No contest. Mouse, trackball for me, and keyboard FTW.

I have a friend who is playing FNV on PS3 with a controller. It's painful to watch him trying areas I waltzed through. He needs VATS, I never use it.

I tried playing FO3 with a controller, but the aiming is just too slow and inaccurate. I like the controller for everything else... the stick for moving around and the button layout, that's all good, but it's such a struggle to aim at something and shoot quickly, while with a mouse it just feels so natural and easy. In a first-person game, especially one with guns, I need the ability to look around as freely as I do in the real world. I just can't do it with a thumbstick.

The only thing I would like about a gamepad would be the hotkeys. I hate reaching up to the number keys in the middle of a fight and I have no clue why we can't change them in game.

Mouse and Keyboard is 100x better than any gamepad though. When I first got a PC I hated the mouse but when you get used to it you can never go back to those two stupid sticks. My skills in games like L4D with the gamepad compared to mouse and keyboard aren't even close.

I really love the comfort of the controller on the PS3. Recently I have been playing FO3 on my computer and I am trying to get used to the M/K, but I find it's not as smooth as using a controller to walk around. Sure I can aim faster, but it takes me time to position my characters body, so I don't know if it makes me any faster. I'm still going to try and get accustomed to the m/k though because I want to play FO3 with mods. :)

Maybe I'll give up and get a controller or something. Hm.

Depends if the game is actually design for a controller; if it is, chances are control would do well.

For NV, I would go K&M.

I love the PS3 gamepad; it became like an extension of my hands. It's so smooth and has a lot of control. When I switched to PC, I wanted a gamepad for that too and the one I got (Logitech F510) is loosening up but it's not as smooth as the PS3 gamepad. It does a lot of jumping when I'm trying to aim at something. I'm still hoping it'll get better though. I'll lower the sensitivity some more and maybe that will help. ADDED: I played around with it and what really helped was decreasing the Mouse Sensitivity down to 2 ticks in the FNV Settings under Controls. Now it's like the PS3 controller.

I've gotten Morrowind not too long ago and the gamepad doesn't work correctly for it so I'm going to try to learn the keyboard and mouse controls. I hope I can get used to it.

It depends on the game. For racing, action, fighting, etc. I prefer a controller. For first-person and strategy games I prefer a mouse by far. I'm comfortable playing first-person games with a controller, but once you get used to using a mouse it's hard to go back. It's just not physically possible to be as fast and accurate in a first-person game with a controller as you can be with a mouse. The ability to do things like flick your wrist, look behind you, then flick it again and be looking ahead again instantaneously just cannot be beat.

On the subject of wireless 360 controllers on the PC...I've never had a problem. I have two receivers and 4 controllers that have been used on several different PCs and they've always worked perfectly.

Actually, I like the original Xboxtm controller better: the larger size is actually more comfortable to hold for long hours,

Keyboard and mouse for just about everything, especially 1st/3rd person games (though I detest 3rd person view) and RTS's. It just offers much more control IMO plus is infinitely more customisable.

For those saying wired 360 controllers are expensive, I picked up a genuine Microsoft one last year, when I relented for NFS Shift as K&M support was nonexistent(what an abortion of a game that was), for £24 from Game Station, which to my cheap ass isn't expensive at all.

That's the other factor for me--customization. Being left-handed, I have to customize the control setup on every game I play. It's usually no problem on PC (although some games make it very difficult... I'm looking at you, Dead Rising 2 :stare: ).

When using the official xbox360 controller on PC, there is no config utility to change it to a left-handed stick setup (I believe you can do that through the dashboard on the xbox). If the game doesn't offer a lefty setting (FO3 doesn't), then I'm screwed.

I bought an xbox controller since that is the only one officially supported by FO3, but to use it left-handed, I had to run it through a 3rd-party emulator which buggered up the triggers (can't be used at the same time). I would have been better off with a Logitech or something that can be configured.

Consoles are really for casual players but there are people who aren't that casual that go on 20 win streaks. Apart from the fact that it would be expensive as hell to link console and pc players you also have to think of the pc players who would run programs to get host and even the few that are just straight up wall hacking scrubs.
