Movies to get in the mood for Skyrim

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:05 am

We all know that Nordic culture shares a lot of similarities with Norse culture, and that their lore is heavily intertwined with Norse mythology. What movies would you recommend to "get in the mood" for Skyrim? What -good- movies deal with Northern cultures, with Vikings, mythological figures, etc...?

The 4th "Sounds of Skyrim" clip features a picture from Valhalla Rising (2010), which would be my recommendation. It's one of the most artistic movies of last year. Be warned though: Don't expect an epic movie about Vikings, raids and manslaughter (even though this movie is very brutal).

I remember reading somewhere that Skyrim was influenced a bit by Conan the Barbarian... So I will definitely be watching that sometime before release.

Hmm. Conan the barbarian is one of my favorite movies.

And I just saw valhalla rising, it was strange, but still a very good watch.

How about the 13th warrior to get in the mood?

If you like Sorcery and Dragons type movies, then watch Dragonslayer by Walt Disney..still the best damn dragon i`ve seen in a movie yet.

Conan the Barbarian and 13th Warrior are excellent choices also.

13th warrior, but that's already been mentioned a few times... I agree valhalla rising is a great choice.. if you dont mind rather disturbing scenes.

I remember a movie I watched that also set the movie perfectly... I'll get back to you If i remember

That was a quality film..made me laugh my butt off. The little dwarf guy who always says "inconceviable!"..and not forgetting Andre the giant. Classic.

Other good old cheesy fantasy films include.."Hawk the Slayer", "The BeastMaster" (starring Marc Singer from V), Krull, Willow, The Dark Crystal :D

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387541/: It has castles, nobility, duelling, dragon-slaying blacksmiths, and Max von Sydow. What more could you ask?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338769/: A retelling of Beauty and The Beast set during the time of the Vikings. It's a decent movie if you can get past the not-so-good acting and The Beasts bad costume. People who can tolerate bad movies should watch this one... Not as bad as "Big Trouble in Little China" (A movie that I've watched 5 times btw).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0896816/: It's got an angry grizzly bear, nuff said.

I also feel that I should mention that I agree with all of the other suggestions so far, although I can't say anything about "The Beastmaster" or "Hawk the Slayer", as I've never seen them.

I haven't seen "The Dark Crystal" either, but I have a friend who's seen it, and claims I should see it too.

I've also seen "Beastmaster" the TV series, and thought it was pretty good.

Edit* I feel I should warn you, don't watch Grizzly Rage unless you enjoy watching bad movies. I would say it's the king of bad movies, but that would be a false statement; nothing can be as bad as Exterminator City.

A movie most dudes haven't seen (unless they have flesh and blood girlfriends) is Tristan and Isolde. it is a star-crossed loves movie but the time period and costumes and location has Skyim written all over it. i would give a gander if i was you.

13 warrior and Conan great choices. The music in Conan is amazing too. Figures why Arnie only says, like, 5 lines in the whole movie lol

No! You don't want to see a ton of Nords (vikings) get pwnd by ONE native american guy. You need to watch films where the Nords do the pwning. :P

I recommended Dragonslayer in the last thread to show up like this. I agree that it is still the best dragon movie I've seen.

13th Warrior has some aesthetic inconsistencies that annoy me, but overall not too bad.
