[WIPz] mTES4 Manager

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 1:07 am

In case anyone is using or considering to use mTES4 (Psymon ;) ), please wait for me to release v0.2.
It's a huge improvement and not quite backward compatible.
mTES4 no longer uses a mastercopy, so things are much more simplified.

I expect v0.2 will be released sometime tonight.

Btw, check the OP. It's been heavily revised to explain mTES4 better.

Glad I waited.

And for Pacif Morrowind and Gaticus.

There is a thread where they are http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1119410-fo3edit-for-new-vegas/ on the Fallout mod forum.

If one wanted to put in advice, requests, etc - I did for supporting multiple installs and linked this.

I just read through that thread and your post there.
Just so it is clear, TES4Edit will work as it is if you use mTES4.
The caveat is that only the active install will work. IOW, you can't work on a copy that is not the active oblivion install.

Granted, it would be a bit more convenient for folks if TES4Edit did not rely on the Oblivion registry.

I'd be better of posting this in the FO3 forums, but I'm sure alot of you also play it.
I do not have a copy of FO3, but I beleive mTES4 is very close to being capable of working for both Oblivion and Fallout3.

What I need to know is how similar is the Fallout3 installation compared to Oblivion?
I know they are both using virtually the same TES4 engine, so the installation should be very similar.

I'm guessing that they are virtually the same.
Do these (default) folders sound right for FO3?...
"C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3"
"C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Games\Fallout3"
"C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Fallout3"

If it is as similar as I think, then I expect mTES4 will have support for FO3 within the next couple of versions.

Yeah all that is pretty much the same.

But on my vista system the file path for the app data is this:
C:\Users\user name\Application Data\Local\Fallout3 ... same with Oblivion.

They install much the same and anyone with a user account control (UAC) - which means Vista and Win7 will probably install the game in non-default location just like with Oblivion.

It's ok if the game is not installed in C:\Program Files\etc
Also, the profile and appdata are windows system paths, mTES4 just asks windows and then appends the game folder name, so it's all good.
I just needed to know that they are in the same location and named Fallout3.
So that's great news! :)

FO3 support won't be quite ready for v0.2 (which I'm about to upload), but possibly the next release.

Well Wrye Bash got a new release but no fanfare or changelog yet.

Once the changes are understood with it and you assure me that no drastic changes with this will happen then I will take the plunge.

Right now though I'm gonna plunge into my unconsciousness.

Alright, v0.2 has been released!

It is much simpler to deal with now. A mastercopy is no longer used.
Added new feature to import already existing game copies.
Added functionality to rename and delete clones.
Added functionality to copy any clone.
Groundwork laid for future Fallout3 compatibility.

This version should be quite safe and friendly to use now.

Check the OP for details.

Questions about Fallout3:

I understand that Wrye Bash doesn't work for FO3, correct?
Instead there is Gary Bash and Wrye Flash?
Do they use the mopy folder or is it named different? Same place as Oblivion? Eg. Oblivion\Mopy
Do these both use a bash.ini file or is it named different?

v0.3a has been released!

mTES4 should now work for Fallout3 as well as Oblivion!
Other minor bugfixes and changes.

mTES4 seems to be feature complete now.
Barring any snafu's, there likely won't be another update for a little while I take a break and actually play the game! :)

Gary bash is the earlier title for what is now Wrye Flash.

Yes Mopy - sets up BAIN too the same way.

Valda has been very good to the fallout community - the bash deniers that they are.

Ok, good. Thx
I forgot to ask, what is the name of the BAIN mods setting in the bash.ini for Wrye Flash?
EG. in Bash it's sOblivionMods

Is it the same? or something else like sFalloutMods?

PS.
mTES4 is currently coded specifically to only look for bash if the managed game is Oblivion.
But you can still work with Wrye Flash for Fallout3, you just need to configure your bash.ini manually.

Well the default Bash ini for Wrey Flash looks very funky, but I think one gets generated (because I don't recall making one):

For anyone interested in trying mTES4 but still having cold feet ...

Because this is still in early version and alpha stage, it would certainly be wise if you are comfortable working with the various Oblivion files and folders on your PC.
An understanding of how to manually switch between multiple copies of Oblivion would also be helpful to you in the chance that something goes wrong.

See the opening post for more information on how mTES4 works and what things it affects on your PC.

To get your feet wet:
You can experiment with it by using empty folders.
That way you could do a practice run and get a feel for what is entailed.

Just rename your real game folders and replace with empty ones. mTES4 doesn't actually care about the contents.
Same for the profile and appdata folder.

Should I ignore this?

Wait a bit more - I made a basic installed game with all the basic tweaks I would want (LAA exe, PyFFI meshes, ini tweaks, 3.0 shader fix, etc) then renamed my original save game profile and app data and made simpler empty ones of those. I then ran this basic game and did all the ingame settings and tweaks - so when cloning all that is done. game ran fine.

[edit] being impatient as I am I clicked ignore then the blank area at the top of the tool so clicked on it to find Oblvion game but no renaming to a chosen name - no apparent tagging.

Doesn't work like description.

it did generate an ini but all it says is:
[General]
sMTES4_TrackGame = Oblivion

I'm using Windows XP.
I believe your .NET version should be ok. Or I think it would give a different error.

Well clicking rename doesn't do anything either.

The main error window says:
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
then the details I posted in spoiler above.

also no clones or extra copies made in the game profile or app data folders either.

Kinda lost on what to do next.

Ouch does that mean installing Oblivion too? Oh probably not because you can test with empty folders.

What is a virtual machine?

Also to be precise it is a Vista Ultimate OS (64)

and thanks

A virtual machine is a software program that emulates a whole other computer. It's like a computer within your computer.
I actually don't have Vista, at least not installed in the VM.
I do have Windows 7 x64 though and was able to duplicate the error.

VM's are not the fastest, and trying to running a DirectX game within it is killer.

So question:
What is the exact path to the Oblivion profile folder? Same for appdata.

Then I can replicate the need folders.
I'm thinking that Windows is preventing mTES4 from creating the clone folders that it needs.

OkeeDoke

for the game:
I:\Games\Oblivion

for the save game-profile path:
C:\username\Documents\My Games\Oblivion

for app data:
C:\username\AppData\Local\Oblivion

same for Fallout3 - just replace the 'Oblivion' with 'Fallout3'

I found the bug and it's fixed. Was a tiny issue.

Here's a link for the new version

I think you are giving the same link as the rev number is the same and I get the same error.

Oh you caught it.
