[REL] mTES4 Manager

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:34 am

There is no installation. Unless you just mean the first time you run it.
There are no shortcuts either. If you want a shortcut for mTES4, make one.
mTES4 also is not a mod. It is a 3rd party tool.

I have no idea why it is not working for you Ysne58.
I'll need more detail than 'it doesn't work'.
What is the exact path you are installing mTES4 to?
What is the exact path to your Oblivion game folder?
Did you actually close mTES4 before trying to run it again?

You have installed software to your desktop? That is not what your desktop is for.
I don't know if that would cause any problem, but it's just plain bad practice.
Your desktop should more-or-less just be for temporarily working with files.

And yes, the desktop is in the user profile. Though UAC shouldn't be an issue unless you are trying to access your profile from a different user account.

How did you get Oblivion on the desktop in the first place? Did you actually install it there? Or did you just move the folder after you installed?

1. I created the folder on the desktop. Then I installed Oblivion there. Obviously, I have different feelings about how to use the desktop than you do. I also have different needs for this computer than I would if I were actively programming. This is not one of those things that is right or wrong. I do not agree with you that it is bad practice.

2. Until I tried using your mod, I have had not problems accessing or using Oblivion on the desktop. First I tried letting it set up the folders at the default location. I did close it out before trying it again. I went so far as to shut down my computer to make sure it was closed down because I couldn't tell whether it was closed or not. Since it did not work at your default location, I then installed it directly to the desktop. Again it worked that first time. Since I yet again could not tell whether the program had stopped working, I yet again shut the computer down, using the start menu and shutting it down properly (since you seem to think I am an idiot). It did not start up again when I double clicked on the application.

3. I also attempted to create a short-cut which was no more successful in getting your program to work. OBMM, OBSE, the default launcher and the construction set all launch just fine. Your mod only works that first time and then never again.

There is also a difference between the Desktop and the desktop folder. I do not have Oblivion installed in the desktop folder.

Heh, never thought about our mod causing problems with long paths.
If you'd like, you could rename it to something much shorter. You just need to rename the ESP then rename the matching folder in the Sounds\Voice folder, and everything should work fine.

I'm pretty sure this was posted in the wrong thread.

And as for the above - I'd like to know the difference between the desktop and the desktop folder - because i don't know of any difference.

Admittedly I haven't read the entire thread, but my post was in response to this:

Not sure I follow what the problem is. The EAX doesn't work when you switch clones?

Thank you. It looks like it's running into a problem with long file paths. It's cut off at 128 characters. Grr, Visual Basic's fault.
System.IO.IOException: Access to the path 'C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\_DELETINGTIE 2 Clone\Data\Sound\Voice\Weapon Expansion Pack for Oblivion Nthusiasts.esp\High Elf\F' is denied.

For now, if you manually delete the data folder before you delete the clone, it should work ok. For your case anyway.

It's ok, it's just one of those things that has to be watched out for when programming.
Regardless of your mod, the LFN (long file name) error is a well known pitfall in windows programming and is bound to crop up eventually.
I was under the impression that Visual Basic 2008 of all programming languages, would actually address LFN automatically, but apparently not.

You may want to shorten the names though for future releases of your mod. It wouldn't surprise me if Oblivion has a limit of 256 characters for each file in the Data directory.
Still, you aren't very likely to run into that.

And as for the above - I'd like to know the difference between the desktop and the desktop folder - because i don't know of any difference.

The only thing I could figure is that he was referring to the virtual Desktop folder which includes everything that is in the physical desktop folder plus the recycle bin, my documents, my computer, etc.
Technically correct, but irrelevant and actually infers a LESS specific location. IE. anywhere on the computer, since the Desktop is the root of the windows virtual path tree. (if you keep clicking the Up button in explorer, you will eventually get to My Computer and then Desktop)

I'm also having problems making clones, and I will need a quick reply on how I can make this program work in simple terms! (not the confusing tecnical terms that only a computer genius can understand!) My PC is also a Windows Vista 32 bit operating system!

Here's pics to show how my game is set up and the error mTES4 is giving me!

I just don't know what I did wrong! :( I think I epicly failed somewhere!! And yes, before I went to try cloning my copy of TES-4, I uninstalled my game and reinstalled the game with only the basic game and the GOTY stuff (1.2.0416 and Shivering Isles and KOTN) so I could have a clean slate with not one single user made mod installed! Just Plain Vanilla stuff.

I just wished the makers of this program for cloning copies of Oblivion would have instructions for those of us who use Windows Vista/Windows 7 PCs and not just Windows XP, as the instructions are geared towards XP PCs!

Everything for mTES4 seems to be in order Duke. Your setup is fine.
It appears that UAC is your problem however. Windows is saying that it can't access your Application Data folder.

You could try moving the mTES4 folder so it is outside of your user profile, and see if that helps. Like c-drive/mTES4

I've had issues with UAC but only early on - I denied it when ever prompted.

Try restarting.

Make sure that none of the folders related to its functions (what you are cloning or where mTES4 manager is at) are open in windows explorer when trying to do these things.

I cannot switch or clone if I have the data folder open for the active clone.

I just tried that (moved the mTES4 folder to my c-drive), then went back to step 1 and went to the c-drive and clicked the mTES4.exe, went to name the clone, and still got an access denied popup! I don't know why my PC does that! Here's a pic to show! http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j98/thedukeofspoook/accessdenied.jpg?t=1291105139

I'm starting to now think this file is just not Vista friendly (or that my PC is just not accepting this program!!

I use Vista and have been able to use every version thus far.

What I've not done is import a clone from a directory other than where the main clone is and where this is installed.

mTES4 does work on Vista and Windows 7. I don't know if Vista *32bit* has been tested yet, so it's possible there is a small bug in mTES4. I don't think that is the case though.

I'm not quite sure how to help you debug this problem... :/

Please tell me if you have a folder named C:\Users\*Your Username*\Application Data
.. as described in your error message.

If, and I expect so, then please tell me if you have a folder named C:\Users\*Your Username*\Application Data\Local\Oblivion-mTES4

*edit
I'm actually a little confused why it is referencing the 'Application Data' folder for Vista. I understood this is the name on XP but for Vista and Win7 it is 'AppData'.
In any case it is a special folder and mTES4 just asks Windows for the correct path no matter what version of windows or unique settings you use.

No I don't have an Application Data folder under the C:/Users/*Your Username*/ (let alone one that has a 'Local' subdirectory under it!)

Did you install Oblivion in the default location? against common recommendations not to - see http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes4Mod:Wrye_Bash/Installation#Windows_Vista.

Where did you install Oblivion?

I don't have a third of those files under Users/usermane - certainly not Nehrim.

If you did install in default location then perhaps there is an issue with importing a clone when it is under UAC control.

Then if AppData does show up when searching can you open it?

Yes, I had it installed into a specially named folder, and doing it that way in the past I never had problems installing mods, wrye bash or OBMM that way! I just don't know why mTES4 is giving me so much headaches, though!

It does seem odd to have so much stuff in the user profile. That is not typical, but it is perfectly valid. It is the Home directory and technically that is where you should be storing stuff that is specific for a user. It's not a good idea to actually install stuff into the home directory though, it's just for user storage.

I think I know what the problem may be.
You have Oblivion installed to C:\Users\*Your Username*\Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
For your last pic linked, you have renamed it to 'Main Oblivion folder'?

I'm pretty sure everything in C:\Users is protected by Windows UAC.
The Error Details indicates that mTES4 is crashing when it is trying to detect your clones.
This is kind of a bug in mTES4, but it only affects your situation, having Oblivion installed in the user profile.

To be technical, the problem is that mTES4 is scanning every folder that is next to your Oblivion folder, which includes the 'Application Data' folder, and windows doesn't like that.
Solution: install Oblivion outside of UAC control.

I suggest you install Oblivion to C:\Games\Oblivion
You can keep mTES4 in your home directory if you want, it shouldn't cause problems being there itself. Though I don't recommend having any programs in your user profile. Only use it for storage, if you must use it at all.

I'm sorry I'm missing what you are saying - are you saying that you did or didn't install in a non default location.

I ask because that file path would put the game under UAC control if I'm not mistaken.

I would try that, but I don't have a "Games" folder under C: drive! And I also just got thru uninstalling my Oblivion game for the 3rd time tonight! So what do I do now when I go to reinstall my game tommorow? Just have it install straight to the C: drive hoping that a "Games" folder gets automatically created?

Just make it yourself.

Every game I've ever installed gave me the option to install where I wanted.

And sorry Gaticus - I think I just ninja'd again - should stay out of it - just trying to help.
