Y so much dislike of mothership Zeta

Post » Wed Oct 05, 2011 5:33 am

After xcelent help from the forum advice, i completed mothership zeta. When i scanned the forums on MZ i found a majority dislikes MZ. Why? I found it enjoyable & amusing re:film Mars Attacks. The aliens remind me of those in the movie. It was a great diversion from the wasteland & the view of Earth from the Death Ray deck gave me incentive to eradicate every alien i could. If you've not played MZ yet, do so soon. If you played it & disliked MZ, Why? I'd love to hear your opinions.

It's a good DLC in it's own right, as in a fight through an alien ship, but the problem is that it's incredibly far-fetched for the Fallout series. While there is retrofuturism, laser guns and everything, Fallout still keeps up some sense of realism. And as far as we know there are no little green men preying on us in space, so MZ is a bit too out of place.

Another con is that it gets tedious. On higher levels there are just too many bullet sponge enemies so you can't really enjoy the view.

I really enjoyed MZ. I liked how it was set in a huge alien ship and the story of the aliens abducting people so they can make hybrids and the weapons are awesome especially the novasiege or whatever its called.

It's actually a really good DLC. It's like taking the wild wasteland trait but better. The production values are amazing too, when you get a chance to walk on the ship, it was breathtaking.

I suppose I'll be the "bad guy" here.

MZ made absolutely no sense within the context of the Fallout world. Aliens and orbiting spaceships have nothing to do with picking up the pieces of a post-apocalyptic world. It was out of place and far-fetched. Not only this, but if Mothership Zeta is now considered canon, we should assume that the technology of the Aliens is now in the hands of the CWBOS (which includes a massive death-ray).

It's not the same as going to the industrial irradiated ruins of Pittsburgh or the grungy swamps of Maryland (both awesome locations)......

....abduction by Aliens....really?

Even more than this, Mothership Zeta is a glitchy mess. I don't think I've played through it once without encountering some major bugs. One time I was forced to reload a save in order to continue (same thing has happened to many other people I gather).

The Only thing about MZ i have to say is i regret it... when i return to the game i use MZ just as a gear run.. the ammount of HP the shielded aliens have is outragous on hard, or very hard.. I often find myself changing it to very easy, again.. just in it for the gear.

I was MAJORLY upset when (me not knowing) ran through MZ, JUST for general chase's overcoat, only to find ITS BUGGED! WTF!?!

But, the only thing i really liked, is how they incorperated "Alien Ghouls" into it... something original there.

Personally, I disagree on how it was a good DLC. Ignoring how it was a silly DLC trying to be serious instead of reveling in its absurdity, it just wasn't that good. It was as linear as Anchorage, except it didn't have varied enemies to fight like cloaking enemies or spider mines or huge tanks, nor was the end loot as good.

Enemies were basically "alien who acts like your generic raider with a different model and possibly more HP, melee robot, shooty robot, and reskinned feral ghoul." Worse, Zeta itself was a cramped environment for the most part, with no real opportunity for alternative tactics - there was no cover to be had in general, forcing you to basically run and gun your way through everything instead of trying alternative options.

Because Mothership Zeta implies that Aliens may have something to do with the Great War. This breaks canon because: "The end of the world occurred pretty much as we had predicted; too many humans and not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons as always, purely human ones." Just asking the question "Did they have something to do with the Great War?" Destroys the whole point of Fallout. That mankind caused the great war because of our own faults. If aliens had something to do with it, well it's no longer our fault!

As other pointed out that it would also make the CWBoS uber gods because there is no reason to believe that the Lone Wanderer would not share the tech to his BoS buddies. The Doors being closed at the end of Mothership Zeta is just away for the devs to say "ok DLC over go do something else." That little girl still moves freely around the ship, it would not take long for the BoS to get around closed doors.

Aliens have been nothing more then easter eggs in past Fallouts aka a joke, for fun, [censored] and giggles. Bethesda took that joke to far and made a whole DLC about aliens watching over mankind for thousands of years and maybe even causing the great war. Ruins Fallout. Aliens don't belong, because once they start playing a role in the Fallout Universe it's no longer Fallout. It becomes "Fallout: War of the Worlds" or "Fallout: Resistance."

Aliens. If I wanted aliens in my game I would play a Star Trek or Star Wars game.

In it's own right, I said. I don't think it's a good Fallout DLC, but had it been an independent story my eyes would have not bled so much while playing it.

My problem with MZ wasn't that Aliens don't belong in the fallout universe. It was that they din't explain anything about the back story of the aliens other than the fact that they have some sort of fixation for abduction of people.

If it was announced as non canon I would love it but right now I just think it was okay.

Aliens and referencing to their plot to start the Great War (basically taking away all meaning of Fallout) is ehat makes most people hate it.

I thought it was pretty fun though, its just for [censored] and giggles and does that well.

Bad level design, piss easy enemies, still bad writing, errors in logic (use that laser you destroyed to destroy the other ship!).

it was just plain bad.

This should be in the spoiler section.

Yeah, it's an old game by now, but I still haven't even set foot here yet, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Breaking cannon is fine for a dlc. Other Fallout games have broken Fallout cannon. On to my gripes:

1. These aliens are ridiculous

Their gibberish language is as hostile as Rosie O'Donnel's racist mockery of the Chinese. For intelligent beings who have achieved interstellar travel, genetics expertise, and robotic mastery they behave like scalies from the movie Gremlins 2. They are not here to invade, but to proceed with research for a goal that is never explained along with other things that should be, like the recordings and the need for specimens from different periods. They are meatsacks and they are ugly.

2. Toshiro Kago

You do realize that he is the Last Samurai? And they give him a poor supporting role with dialogue with no hope of understanding for lack of a universal translator. I don't care if it is not realistic, we are on an alien vessel. I would have loved to know what an Oda samurai had to say about all of this, and to hear his poetry or help him burn incense in his helmet so that his enemies will be greeted with a pleasant aroma should he be killed. It is so egregious that we've missed the opportunity to train Sally in the ways of the Bushido.

It's true that this dlc is intended for adventure, but what a bad note to leave Fallout 3 with. On to the pros:

1. If you have this dlc then you likely already have the rest from the GOtY. This is good because you can now play A Quest for Heaven episodes 2 and 3, Australian Federation Air Ship Brisbane, and Underground Hideout.

2. This dlc, for good and mostly bad, is on the same turf as Honest Hearts and Dead Money for FNV.
