So much for a lack of Dragons.

"i want dragonz lol" Always a classic request on the old 'Wants, wishes and hopes' topic while we were all still waiting for news of the next TES instalment. And it was always met with the same response from lore fanatics; There will be no dragons, it is against Elder Scrolls lore, there are only very few dragons in Tamriel and they won't make an appearance.

And yet they are, clear as day in the teaser trailer released. What is everyone's opinion on this seeming U-turn in the lore? Can it be pulled off or is it a cliche included in order to appeal to a more casual audience?

Personally I'm excited about the dragons, IF they do them right. I don't want them to be around every corner, and you can slay them with a few swings of your weapon. I want maybe 5-6, and they should be incredibly rare and incredibly dangerous powerful.

Edit: I guess powerful is a better word than dangerous, as we do not know whether the dragons will be friend or foe yet.

At least it will now be easier to answer the question, "Where were you when the dragon broke?".

Eh, there already been a Dragon in a previous TES game, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_Adventures:_Redguard, so it seems like those "lore fanatics" didn't do their homework. Granted, it was a spin-off, but still. And the dragon was the easiest boss in the game too, so no wonder they are extinct :P

I want one, and I want it to be a rogue dragon.

If they go the generic evil-dragons-destroying-the-world-for-no-particular-reason route then I will lose all faith in BGS' ability to comply by their lore, and with it much of the reason I enjoy the TES series.

I don't really care, as long as the dragons aren't too cliche.

Of course it can be pulled off. Dragons have always been important in the Elder Scrolls lore - the Empire had dragon imagery all over the place. Just because a dragon never appeared "in the flesh" didn't mean they didn't have a significant presence in the games before that.

"There are dragons in our universe, but we always keep them just out of reach and tease their existence with references" isn't a pillar of a setting. It's a set-up. Dragons were absent in previous TES games, but their existence and possible future appearances were always hinted at. Skyrim is the pay-off to those hints.

I'm fine with the dragons as long as they do them correctly as the lore states they are. Extremely intelligent. And not super evil world destroyers cause that's how they roll

That doesn't change the fact that their appearance will have a massive impact on the storyline, and their being clichéd is a perfectly valid worry.

Of course it doesn't change that fact. It is that fact. I suppose that, in theory, the dragons could be there just for being cliche fantasy. But my point is that that's not necessarily the reason. It's not even the most likely reason. Dragons were put up on the mantle piece way back at the beginning of the series. Chekhov demands they be taken down at some point.

"Dragon born"

Sounds to me like there were dragons at some point. How else could you be "dragon born" without dragons?

There was also a dragon at the end of oblivion's main quest. You could not fight it, but still.

Except for Alduin.

Obviously. And if he's coming to destroy the world I will be disappointed. It will be another "oh no, I gotta save the world from the apocalypse" story.

Dragons are lore. What is written about them to date has so many ways to play out.

I'm kinda glad there might be some expansion of the lore about them. *grabs popcorn*

Anyone? popcorn? :icecream:

Obviously this means that the good players of World of Warcraft could not manage to stop Deathwing the Destroyer and now it's up to us.

Non cliche dragons? In my TES? Oh no!

If there are dragons, then there have to be abducted virgins of sheer beauty in front of a dragon cave. Captivated at some pale and crying. In fine white robes of silk that have to be as six as hell! Low cut, with a rope around the waist and a slit that makes a man's knees go weak. What else could dragons be good for i want to know.

Woah, calm down man. We don't need to hear about your dragon six fantasies.

Im sure Bethesda can balance the "DRAGONS! DRAGONS EVERYWHERE!" with established TES lore.
Although a few threads like this to make them wake up in case they got a "Dragons, dragons everywhere!"-policy going on wont be too bad, I guess...

EDIT: For example I can could see Killmoms reading this topic... Good that they read what we post.

Dragons are fine as-long as the game has better more streamline animations, as I don't want a Cliff Racer fly down look, you know what I mean appear to flying forward but yet diagonally going down a more flowing look down would be better... Also Dragons should also be more epic to fight then just " have a sword, you are a dragon I just swipe at you for a while till you are dead." It needs to be more involving perhaps a bit more slower trying to find a weakness, and fire needs to be very hard to dodge and perhaps more use of the dodge and roll idea from Oblivion.

If Saiden Storm can add Akatosh Mount to the old engine with the CS looking as good as it did I have confidence they would look fine.
