I think it depends on what kind of shooter you're looking for. I can see why CoD fans may not like Brink, there's not a whole lot of idiocy to Brink, run and gun gameplay is limited to only a few points on each map, going off and 'doing your own thing' will usually end in you being killed quickly and a team of soldier classes running around shooting everything in sight just wont work.
While I've read some complaints about lag, I haven't experienced any in my 13 hours of game play, all of which have been online with all human players. Maybe I'm just lucky though.
Personally I'm having a blast with the game. Putting in 13 hours of gameplay in 2 days is rare for me unless a Mass Effect game is released. Are there improvements that could be made? Sure, I'd like more maps, more guns, more customization, larger team sizes, more abilities, and the random appearance of giant people eating panda bears, but to be fair I think I would want all of those in any online shooter.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a fantastic team based online shooter, Brink is definitely worth the money. If you want more of the same broken online deathmatch spawn camping like Call of Duty... well I guess play Call of Duty.
