Mudcrab Legs and Shrimp Scampy

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:37 am

I really missed the mudcrab merchant and creeper in Oblivion. Partly because there were no merchants with large amounts of gold, but mostly because I fell in love the first time I went to mudcrab island in Morrowind.

Id like to see these 'easter egg-ish' merchants return in Skyrim, or at least a homage to their original counterparts. There is no doubt that a special merchant could be hidden VERY well in a game like this. Since a scamp in Skyrim may be out of the question, perhaps there could be another creature or race that is named "Creeper" and has larger amounts to barter with than most. Maybe instead of a mudcrab merchant, there could just be a reference. I could see a shop in one of the port cities: The Mudcrab Merchant.

Personally I wouldnt mind seeing the actual creatures return, but I can understand if some people didnt like the idea of talking creatures so in that case maybe a reference would be more appropriate.

Your thoughts?

Creeper (the scamp) was very likely actually Clavicus Vile's dog (when you were carrying the dog-statuette during the Umbra mission in OB the dog said something like "I used to be a scamp doing business with Orcs"). but i wouldn't mind a more secret merchants like the mudcrab merchant.

The Mudcrab Merchant should be voiced by Christopher Walken

EDIT: i wouldn't want them to be as game-breaking though. bring a few soul-gems to Creeper, and you can get >100K gold in no time.

1. This was the main (and only) reason.
2. I only found out about them from the internet - nothing can be secret anymore.
3. Great idea, a nice subtle reference for insiders.

Thats what I loved about the mudcrab. I dont think I discovered him til my second playthrough, thanks to the guide I purchased. Without the guide or the internet I probably would have never found him at all. And if I had, I doubt I would have tried to initiate dialog with him lol.

I defenitely want there to be more gold to barter with this time around with regular merchants, but Id also like a special one that is well hidden and has considerably more gold than other merchants.

I'm loving this idea, at least put in some references to them. I'd probably only make my purchases at "The Mudcrab Merchant".

I had my point of recall pretty much permanently next to the mudcrab; though I eventually thought it wasn't really in the spirit of things to use Mr Mudcrab and that scamp chap in Caldera exclusively, so I'm kind of ambivalent about the whole thing. But having a mudcrab with normal level mercantile skill and funds would be quite entertaining.

Yea I can see what you mean by that. Again though, the idea is to have this creature hidden so well that people dont discover him the first time through.

I just miss my crab friend : (

True nothing can be well hidden with internet, somebody of the thousands of players will find it fast and post it.
Yes to merchants with more money, perhaps use Morrowind's and Fallouts system but have some rich merchants you get access to later as they don't trade with everybody.
However the rich merchants would usually not give you a good deal like the high level merchants in Oblivion.

I think a better solution would be to give the regular merchants more gold. The main reason I use the Creeper and mudcrab merchants in MW is that they are the only ones that can pay a decent sum of money for artifact-like items (outside Mournhold). I don't want to sell an item worth 2000 gold to a merchant with 800 gold, it's just a big waste of money.

(Also, a nice little trick when bartering with the Creeper is to sell him some things that are woth ~5000 gold, and when you want to sell him something that's worth more than he can afford you simply take his 5000 gold plus trade back the items you've sold to him already to make up the difference, and then sell those items again. :shifty: )

Couldn't agree more :)

I loved that about Morrowind, the game played with a lot of new features, I wish they'd start doing that again.
"Special" merchants add to the atmosphere of the game and surprise you in a good way. Plus, there's this feeling of satisfaction when you find one :D I remember my first reaction seeing the scamp... I thought to myself "Is this a bug...? what the ****... He actually sells stuff to me, cool." xD I wish for more moments like these.

I'd rather the economy be overhauled to work well, rather than seeing Mudcrab on Creeper back as an instant-fix.

Actually, the two are almost completely unrelated.

The topic is regarding merchants, so I'll give you that one. But we arent discussing the economy.... we're discussing 'special merchants'. These can come back as references or actual merchants regardless of what the economy is. Its not as a method to 'fix' anything. Its for fun.
