Multiplayer Colosseum

Post » Wed Nov 10, 2010 4:55 pm

Okay before I describe my idea let me just say that I love the single player experience in the Elder Scrolls games and am looking forward to Skyrim. Obviously I think that any time and effort the Bethesda team have, should go into making the single player experience the best it can be. Now with that said what would you think if...

If Bethesda had the time to design a multiplayer colosseum(kind of like the arena in Oblivion), where we could take our characters that we have created in the single player game and compete against one another in 1 vs.1, 2 vs.2, etc. deathmatchs for gold or prizes which we would put up ourselves as the competitors. Others could also come to the fights and spectate from the stands, wagering on fights or enjoying an ale while waiting for their turn to do battle in the arena. Others still could set up booths in a market around the colosseum and peddle theirs wares(potions they've made, enchanted items they've created, weapons or armor they've collected but have no need for anymore). So what do you think? Would it be something any of you would be interested in?

By the early posts I think some of you are perhaps misunderstanding me(but then again maybe not). My idea isnt to taint the single-player world with a multiplayer arena, or to add multiplayer to it at all. Just an arena completely separate from the game itself that we could log on to with our created characters to show them off and compete for fun.

I think that would be awesome but I am skeptical they could make balanced gameplay. I know we dont know all the spell effects but imaging this on the earlier games it would be ridiculously unbalanced with everyone running around in full chameleon suits.

but yea I think it would be great if it was done right

I'm very happy for the game to stay single-player. To Bethesda I say, go with what you know.

So what do you think?

I think this belongs in the one and only official multiplayer thread:

Would it be something any of you would be interested in?

As I've said countless times before- hell no.

In my opinion, multiplayer would ruin TES. It's a singleplayer franchise and I hope it stays that way.

Multiplayer requires a balancing between player characters. Elderscrolls never had that, implementing ti would make singleplayer less fun. Because certain skills that used to have overpowering effects such as paralyze are taken out/altered to make combat fair.

I believe it could be modded to change the arena with another (technically interior) cell, possibly large one and looking like some exterior... Then some public Skyrim-deathmatch servers on the internet would show up... Oh no!

How would it work on the PC?

Custom races.

Custom armor.

Custom weapons.

Custom spells.

Custom combat changes (Deadly reflex as an example)

How is it going to work for players using any of these trying to play with players that aren't using the same combination of mods?

With any other single player game I'd say I like this idea, but there are too many things that could potentially go wrong that have already been stated in this thread. Best TES stays a single player game until info surfaces on that rumored TES MMO.

Nu-uh, It just wouldn't work, if they were going to go multiplayer, they should just make a completely different game, I don't want them to try and convert an existing game to mp format :shakehead:

I think this was brought up before and it wasn't recieved well. I don't want it and I don't see how it could be balanced really.

Scrap this thread please, there is an official
discussion fo this already look for it, the mods remove thread like these because they cause too much worthless clutter, why you want the TES series to delve into a garbage fest that is multiplayer I do not know, but their are other games that do this just fine, go play them.

Wow!! Touchy subject.

First off I can understand the balance issues that such a thing would present. The last thing I would want to see is the single player experience dissected to accomodate a multiplayer one.

Secondly, to be honest I wasn't even thinking about the problems that mods would pose when I posted this thread.

Thirdly, though, I can't believe the overwhelming NO NO NO to such an idea. It was a hypothetical scenario guys--that was all--I was basically asking if you guys would enjoy the experience that could be had if such a thing were implemented--if it were implemented without sacrificing any aspect of the single player experience we all have come to enjoy and love. Its as if the very mention of 'multiplayer' and 'elder scrolls' in the same sentence is blasphemy to some folks and each time the two are uttered together it weakens the integrity of the franchise. Cmon guys if that mentality governed the growth of the game industry, we'd all still be playing pong.

Pong was a basic game in the addition. Of another player extended it's life because alone it became boring. You try to do that now in today's industry, that's just a sign of lazyness on the companies part. Some off us don't need buddies to enjoy a game, I don't want mods being sacrificed for multiplayer, exactly how many times can you play halo reach before it gets boring? The TES series doesn't -need- multiplayer that's just a selfish social desire among to be among players nothing more.

Once Skyrim is released, if Bethesda wants to make a separate game, with a separate development group, that does not have the TES title and allow it to use your character from Skyrim than I'm fine with that. I won't buy it and neither will the majority of others.

However, I do not want one single resource from Todd's development team that works on the single player games to waste their time on multiplayer games that the majority of the gamers do not want.

There are plenty of other multiplayer RPG's, go play one of those if you want to play multiplayer. Let TES be unique.

Elder Scrolls is a franchise that is deeply rooted in and focused on singleplayer, from Beth's point of view, so I think multiplayer TES would be great, however, not for Skyrim, and not by Beth (understand, this is not because I don't think Beth would do a good job, but because they're good at singleplayer, and they should stick to it - we don't want some upstart dev taking over and ruining a genre like TES)

Edit: By Beth not doing it, I mean, the actual development part. In case you were wondering.
