Multiplayer Discussion Thread

Post » Thu May 13, 2010 2:06 am

This thread should be used to discuss all your concerns, suggestions and other comments regarding multiplayer. I will begin with a question. How does matchmaking work? Do you enter a lobby and search for a map similar to Call of Duty or is it something totally different? I read that the multiplayer is people simply playing through campaign with human opponents so does this mean that you can't just sit in a matchmaking lobby and play through the maps randomly?

I would also like a Dev response to whether there will be private match lobbies so a site such as Gamebattles can support the game and if so, how much customization is within the game as far as custom lobbies go?

Not much is known on matchmaking. Nor on customization of private games. But, I remember there being more in depth options on PC.

There are a few types of matchmaking.

You can do "campaign mode" in multiplayer, where you do each map in order, the side that wins goes to the next map, the side that loses gets put back in matchmaking to try the map again.

You have the option to ignore the story and just use matchmaking on a certain map though.

All matchmaking is done by level. There are 4 blocks: 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, and 16-20 (20 is the level cap). So if you are just using matchmaking, you will never face someone more than 4 levels above you.

I don't know about private rooms on the two consoles, but the PC has dedicated servers, so you could easily password your entire server if you have one, if not just a single match.

There is a large amount of customization for rooms/servers. Of the confirmed variables that i can think of, friendly fire and VOIP are the obvious ones, there is also team size, toggling high level skills, modifying spread, and modifying ability point regeneration.

I think Brink needs to be careful with the level blocks. Yea it's fine when alot of people are playing, but when not many people are online it would probably get hard to find a game if the people online a spread through the blocks to thinly.

Also if you have say 10 lvl 20 chars and want to make another one. You dont really wanna get stuck with lvl 1-5 n00bs.

I reckon there should be exceptions, say if you have many high lvl characters, then your new low level should be allowed in any level group lobby because you have met the requirements (I.e not a n.00b) etc..

When you choose to ignore the campaign mode in multiplayer does Brink leave you playing the same map over and over again or does it change after each play?

You can freely switch between maps.

I think Chron11 means do the maps change each game without needing to be changed manually I.e COD:BO map changed auto each game match, no new lobby is needed same one is used (I.e same People if they haven't left)

In objective/stopwatch mode, you move on to the next map like in COD, no matter if you win or lose.
In campaign mode you have to keep playing the same map, untill you win and each time you will face other opponents.

Is it the next one or random (Like COD)?

from what i can gather it seems their is not a online multiplayerr fuction. as in team death match or something. watching some vids i hear paul wedgewood say thet their are three types of gameplay: campiaghn were its only you and everyone else is an AI, only weith your friends who are playingo n your side but he also said that their is no waiting time. they can drop in and drop out whenever they want, then theirs the full online where everyone is an online player in CAMPAIGHN. so its like your playing campaighn but everyone on yourside and the other side is real. and from i have read about this then the loses replay the map and the winners move on but if its only in capaighn then whos campaighn are you really playing?

It's unconfirmed how the map cycle will be for Objective and stopwatch mode. My guess is that you will follow the story, but everytime on the next map wether you win or lose.

You heard right, but interpret it in the wrong way.
Since SP and MP are blended together, the SP story = MP story. The difference is that you play 8v8 in MP mode and in SP mode it's 1 + 7 bots versus 8 bots. You can replace these 7 bots by friends and you have the Cooperative aspect of the game.
Campaign, objective and stopwatch are the 3 confirmed gamemodes in MP.

There's in no TDM, FFA, CTF, SnD. They're all blended in the objective type gameplay that Brink offers (I mean the way of playing, not objective like in the gamemode) Having FFA is pointless since the whole system is based around teamgames. CTF and SnD has been covered in the objectives you need to complete in order to win. TDM is just plain unneccessary.

Everything carries over. If you're level 10 in SP, you can go online with that level 10 character. If you unlock something in MP, you can use it in your SP campaign.
You just play the same maps as in singleplayer, but now you do it online against other people.

I can't remember which vid, but one of the devs said that If you are only on chapter 1 in SP and you jump into chapter 6 on one of your friends games, your SP story progression remains unaffected (I think the same might go for multiplayer if you do Objective/stopwatch) But your char progression is all carried over

At least that's what I can remember from the devs explanation of it from the vid/interview

You can use earned experience on any of your characters. So if you had even one level 20 character, let alone 10, you could use the experience you gain with that character to level up a new character you made. You could even get a character to level 20 without ever playing him.

You can play any of the maps whenever you want. If you wanted to play the levels in backwards order, you could, it just wouldn't make as much sense as doing it chronologically. So in multiplayer, you are free to jump into any game you want, and do the campaign on your own time, or just do the levels in order in multiplayer.

Your probably right, but here is the vid that made me think your SP game progression (Not Char progress) remained unaffected (I don't think of unaffected is a bad thing, I would like it to be unaffected.. anyway)

Here's the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkCP1M7PmSg at 1:57 he asks the question. (I finally found it lol)
It just made me think your SP story progression wasn't affected (good thing) I'm probably wrong but there's the vid.

He was just saying that the player in the example would most likely go back to level 3 to figure out what happened leading up to level 6.
