Multiple Character Slots

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 11:22 pm

I always play TES games with my character in mind. In Oblivion, I made a conjurer mage as my main character. It didn't really fit with doing certain quest lines (fighter's guild, thieves guild, Knights of the Nine, etc) So I created other characters to do these quest lines and it was a lot more enjoyable for me.

In Skyrim, I'd like to have multiple character slots so I can switch between them when I want some variety without much fuss.
What say you?

It isn't hard to swap between characters already...

It's cumbersome and you only get 1 set of Auto saves and Quick Saves. This means you have to create unique saves all the time. It could be implemented much better is what I'm saying.

I agree. I don't like having to switch accounts on my Xbox to change which character I want. The reason why I don't have all of my characters on one account is because then I lose track of who is who, and my accidently choose the wrong character, or save over a wrong save.
I think that Mass Effect 2 (I didn't play 1, so I don't know about it) and Fable 2 and 3 (again, I didn't play 1) had that, and I think it makes things easier.

But if you had multiple character slots, like Fable, you'd have a limit to how many characters you can have.

You only need one auto save and one quick save. You are only playing one character at a time, or at least that's how I play. Really, manually saving the game before loading up another character isn't really cumbersome at all.

I agree. Also, in many families, two or more people use the same PC. Everybody should have their own characters and save games. Diablo is a good example of having multiple characters slots.

Sure you can manage. That's not the point. It's like saying you don't need a bed when you can sleep on the ground.

Aren't the multiple save slots the same, if not better, than character slots?
Think about it before asking for pointless additions. For example, in Oblivion you can save whenever you want, you can load a character whenever you want. All it takes is hit the Start button, choose load or save, then a character. So basically there already are character slots.

I don't see what's wrong with the system they have now. And its likely that you can name your saves this time around. You could do it in Daggerfall, you could do it in Morrowind, but you couldn't do it in Oblivion (except for "cheating" with the PC) and people complained. You should be able to do it this time.

100% agreed. I hate having to use a 3rd party tool like http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?id=28&view=OblivionUtilities.Detail.

In this day and age, there is no reason not to add this feature!

Plus if I wanted to redo a quest on a character I couldn't save before I do it because autosave would overwrite the save.

Just turn off autosave.

EDIT: That's not right. Autosave saves over its own slot, dubbed "Autosave", not any of the other saves you have.

I mostly use Autosave and Quicksave. Having to constantly manage my saves is an immersion breaker for me. All I want is unique Autosaves and Quicksaves for each character.

Doesn't matter, I wouldn't be able to redo that quest on that character because if I want to keep using that character I'm going to have to save at some point otherwise everytime I die I'll go back to before that particular quest and lose potentially hours of game playing.

An example is the Oblivion quest Whodunit?, it's a quest that you can keep replaying because of how it is styled and is in my opinion the best quest in the game. With the suggested system you could never go and replay your favourite quests without making an entirely new character.

The system we have now is superior, simply put.

This could be an alternative.

I don't get this thread. You already can have as many characters as you want, it's save files.

Nowhere in this entire thread was it suggested to get rid of unique saves.

But if you have separate character save slots then you would have to save over that same file everytime? How can you have multiple saves if you only have one save slot PER character?

Sure, but you only get 1 set of Autosave and Quicksave. They overwrite the previous one every time.

That's why you have the ability to save multiple games for the same person. Honestly people, it's not rocket science.

Then you need to reiterate your OP and give more detail to the system you suggest.

Just saying "I want multiple character slots" made me think of other games that use this such as the Fable series and I'm giving reasons why it'd be more of a step backwards.

i only make one character each TES but I can see this being useful. No more hard to find saves and accidental overwriting
