Multiple Copies if using MGE, MGE XE, MCP and/or Wrye Mash

Post » Tue Jun 14, 2011 5:29 pm

I read the pinned FAQ about how to install and run multiple copies of Morrwind but the FAQ was written around 2005 and does not address the use of such 'mods' as MGE, MGE XE, MCP, Wrye Mash; my quick search had hits but nothing that seemed to address my question.

I have a game in progress in which I have MGE, MCP and Wrye Mash (ver 84 ??) in use. I decided I would like to try to run multiple copies so that I could fool around with the CS without messing up my game in progress.

Simply put, I followed the steps in the FAQ using my MW backup (call it a vanilla game - no mods or MGE, only one save game at the point at which my char exits the Seyda Neen Customs Office for the very first time). I placed the copies on a different HD.

After copying the folder and files and making the shortcuts as instructred, I tried to start a game using the copy. It shut down, and a mwse-mge log.txt file was created effectively saying path could not be found and to trying usine mgegui.exe to recreate the save files, despite that I do not have any mods nor have I installed anything to mod the game to use MWSE afaik.

So what's going on here? Can I run multiple copies of Morrowind, some of which would be vanilla (no MGE or MGE XE) and others would use MGE or MGE XE. Regardless of how vanilla, I do want to use Wrye Mash, MCP and mlox with each copy. I'm running this on WinXP, SP3. My MW (GOTY) is installed on the system disk (but not in the Program Files folder) and the copies are on a different drive.

TIA for your help.

Were the missing files "d3d8.dll" and/or "dinput8.dll"? - simply copy the over from your working Mw Directory. Or "install" MGE/XE into the "new" directories". Yes, you can have multiple MGE/MGEXE copies running - only you must be careful using the CS then: you might not open the Morrowind Instance you last played...

Yes, were those files missing and if there were than you probably need to extract the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1174576-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/files/Beta%20Releases/MGE%203.8%2B%20SVN%20builds/mge3.8.2-rev.0178.7z/download (I use this MGE archive my self) again into the new game folder or perhaps both.

I know that you can have two copies of Wrye Mash at the same time. You can either use http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1180562-yacobys-wrye-mash-fork/ http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26677509/WryeMash.2011.05.11.7z or http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1106095-wrye-mash-stand-alone/ http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=3646 along with http://mw.modhistory.com/download-95-5568 (http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=4233 is required). :)

The error message reads "Could not open the mge settings file. The system cannot find the path specified. Try running MGEgui.exe to recreate the save files"

I get tiis error message for both the plain vanilla copy of the game (NO mods, NO MGE or MGE XE) and a game copy that has MCP applied but not MGE or MGE XE when I try to run them.

I can run the installed version of MW without incident. That one does have MGE and MCP applied.

However, I still find your anwsers confusing . One, your answer presumes that the message specified missing files, whereas I said the error message that popped up said it could not find the path. When I looked at the game folder of the copy that I tried to run, I found that a file titled "mwse-mge log.txt" had been created in the copy of the Morrowind game that I was trying to run even though the game copy I was trying to run does not have MGE or MGE XE installed .

Second,, your answer implies that I must install MGE in order to run the copies. Is that an absolute requirement?

My question was: how do I run multiple copies of MW (GOTY), some of which would be very vanilla - mods but no MGE or MGE XE amd others which would have MGE or MGE XE. That is the situation I find myself in here.

FWIW, the message in the file "mwse-mge log.txt" reads as follows:

I suggest that you should ask that question http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1174576-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/, because they will know if that's possible or not. :)
