Multiple game discs

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:21 pm

Okay so do you think this game will require more than one disc for Xbox 360? Obviously ps3 doesn't have to worry about that and neither does pc, but for xbox if the game is really big and has a lot of information it's going to require more than one disc. Now if it does I'd like to be able to just install the other discs to my console and only need the first disc to play the game. I hate having to change the disc as I did in ME2, Star Ocean: TLH, and Final Fantasy XIII. I like how Bethesda has allowed us to do this with the expansions in both OB and FO3, but I think, obviously this is just speculation, that it will require more than one disc. Any thoughts?

If it's a big game it might have 2 CD's on the Xbox 360 and the PC. What's so special about the PC CD's ?

pc installs all the discs and uses just the first disc to run...

As I stated my biggest gripe is changing the disc mid-game.

Yes, you can but you can't simply install and keep playing because you have to change the disc. Look at ME2 you have to go to world X and it pops up a screen that says, "Insert Disc 2"

No... PC games install all the data on to your system, and only use the disc to make sure you legally have the game.

That is a problem.
But there are other games where you don't have to swap discs.

Most multiple disc games I've played on pc install the discs to the HDD but require that you still use the first disc to run it. Or you buy it from steam and the game is installed fully on your pc.

That is a problem.

For 360? What games? The only games as I mentioned in my op were Bethesda expansions.

If you install the game to the HDD, then only 1 disk should be all that is needed for a disk check. Just because Bioware screwed it up doesn't mean Bethesda will.

Forza 3 has some cars on the second disc, but is not needed when installed.
Halo 3 ODST has its multiplayer mode on a second disc.

These are of course added content, but this shows, that it is possible to run a two dvd game without swapping discs.

Well it's not just Bioware, it's every other game I've played that had multiple discs. I feel like Bethesda won't screw it up if in fact they do use more than 1 disc but I've been let down before by games.

Like I said, it's all speculation anyways... <_<

Alright, but those games mentioned are add-ons expansions or what have you. I've never seen a whole game with multiple discs let you install all the discs and just require the first to run. Ever. On the 360.

You couldn't have it needing a disk swap anyway. It's an open world game. You can come across different parts in (nearly) any order, so you'd have to change constantly. My best guess is it'll have all the basics on the disk (so it runs faster) and have whatever bulk data is left over installed on the HDD ready to access.

I only remember having to change disks in Mass Effect 2 after a certain point in the story. I think the entire galaxy was still preserved for seamless exploration on either disk, but the dialog/scenes involved in the story required more space than one disk would allow. Maybe I don't remember correctly

If multiple disks are required for Skyrim, I hope a similar system is implemented. Bethesda needs to flesh out the NPCs in the world more than they did with Oblivion, and that would require a lot of voicework (which takes up a lot of disk space). The problem is that the dialog in TES games doesn't so linearly equate to the story because the world is so open. I actually thought about this last night while starting a new playthru of Morrowind. The NPCs have a depth that Oblivion didn't match because our exploration of them was limited by how much voice talent BGS could get to voice them (I love both games, not trying to start MvO war). For Skyrim I'm certain Beth wants to up the ante, but I'm not sure how they can pull it off while still keeping the game within the size range for the 360. Hopefully they've got something clever up their sleeves.

No, I don't.

Thanks to the efficient cell&plugin system Bethesda made large worlds for Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 and they didn't take much space at all. The games would have taken a lot more space if they had been made using the Unreal 3 engine, for example. And I belive they will continue to use the same system, so the storage of the game world shouldn't be any issue.

But granted, if they have a lot more dialogue and/or textures in Skyrim compared to Oblivion and Fallout 3, there might be a problem to store all the stuff so they are forced to use multiple discs for the 360. So the possibility is certainly there.

Since Skyrim is (hopefully) a completely open world (As opposed to ME2 and FFXIII) I don't think there really is a good way to implement disc-switching. Unless you want half of the world on one disc and the other half on the other disc and have to switch disc whenever you want to travel across the world.

I'm not sure many PC players will even have to install from a DVD. You'd think most by now would be buying it from Steam.
